This is a modified remote learning version of my Ruler Work for Beginners Class that would normally be taught in person. I talking about the basics of how to use rulers, machine set-up, supplies, etc. Then walk you through the beginner exercises using the panel that I teach from in the class. (Panel is available for purchase - linked below - if you would like to use it while you go through the class with me on KZfaq).
Rulers and Templates available here:
michaelquilts.com/product-cat...
Ruler Work for Beginners Panel available here:
michaelquilts.com/product/pan...
****NOTE: If the shop is out of stock of panels, they may also be purchased through SPOONFLOWER. www.spoonflower.com/designs/9...
Their shipping charge is a bit high and the processing takes a while. You must choose the size as "1 Yard" to receive the whole panel. The default is a fat quarter, which will not be what you want. I have no control over Spoonflower and their practices, so hopefully they treat you with kindness and quick shipping!

I'm watching this a couple of years after its making. This is so helpful and giving me tips on how to use rulers better (many chipped rulers and messing up the timing). I'm looking forward to seeing more. You're an excellent teacher, Michael. You've mastered online teaching!. Thank you.

Good afternoon! Happy New Year and hope you are staying safe. May I ask if ruler work with this type of intricacy can be done on a domestic machine? I do not have a longarm but would like to get into ruler work...thanks in advance.
@michael.quilts
@michael.quilts 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary Lou! This video is mostly geared towards how you use the rulers with a longarm, but Yes! Many of the same principles apply directly to domestic machine and the same designs can be created for sure! Some things are irrelevant and specific to either but not both. But yes - the rulers and designs can translate to domestic machine. One day I will film working on a domestic. Thank you for your question. Let me know if I cna be of further help! Michael

I am so excited to have found you, Michael. I am a very long time quilter, but pretty new to the longarm. You are a very good teacher - and you never talked down to us. You mentioned Spoonflower and adding a link to the panel you are using. I'd love that link, please and thank you AND do you have a video on how to properly mount quilts to the frame? I would sure like to learn that, too. I'm only using a Q'nique 15R and a Cutie frame...so nothing too big. Still...understand and experience are what I need.

What’s your favorite ruler plate for your INNOVA?
@michael.quilts
@michael.quilts 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. My favorite is the smaller ruler base. However it takes some getting used to when using very large rulers since you have to be mindful to keep pressure only where the base. With the larger base, you have more surface to rely on, but less quilting area due to taking up more space. But my go-to is the smaller one.

Hi Linda. The panel is available through Spoonflower. They do all the work. Here is the link. www.spoonflower.com/en/fabric/9030331-rulerworkpanel1-by-quartersquaredquiltco_ ***Please note - their default length is a fat-quarter. You need to change that length to 1-Yard. Then buy as many as you want. But do not but fat-quarters - you won't be happy. Wish I could change that, but it's all Spoonflower. THANK YOU! -Michael

If you were only able to pick one of your curved rulers to purchase, which one would you choose?
@michael.quilts
@michael.quilts 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marla. Thanks for your question. If I were to pick only one curved ruler, I would probably go with the 10 or the 12. If you can ask yourself what type of quilts you most likely come across to quilt and if you can determine if they are block based and what size the blocks are, that can help you decide. Example: Scrap quilts with lots of small blocks under 8", then smaller curves would be best, so maybe the 8 or 10. if you think most of the quilts you would quilt have larger blocks, like 9"-12", then maybe the 12. OR if you think you want very intricate quilting designs that are smaller, then the 6, 8, 10. Or larger quilting motifs, then the 12, 14, 16. Safe bets are that you would use the 10 and the 12 a lot. Hope this doesn't confuse the decision more. Happy Quilting! Michael

Thank you so much, Teresa! Here is the link to the panel on Spoonflower - but before you buy it, please remember to change the "Size and Quantity" to Yard. It defaults at Fat Quarter. You need size to say Yard so you get the full panel and not a quarter of it, then buy as many as you like. Thank You! Michael
