2008 apex throwback limited release?? Thoughts?
@originalskateboards
@originalskateboards 3 жыл бұрын
Ok. So here are my thoughts. 1. It COULD be awesome. I was on the phone with Bish the other day and we both agreed that we had had some of our best times ever on that board. Plus I don't actually have one in Middleweight and want one (selfishly). 2. We are WAY better at building boards now. The one thing that is more addicting than anything is being able to go back and improve on something you always wanted to fix. In the case of the OG Apex 37 the flex pattern was awesome but there was too much torsional flex to really generate max speed out of the carves (yes clearly not talking DH flex here) , I would love to make a few tweaks to have the board riding the way it did in my head (which was imo even better than reality). I guess that is to say: IF we were to build a new old Apex 37, would #2 above fuck that up? Not sure I can re-release it AND keep my mitts off improving the construction while we are at it. _Scott

Original Skateboards I mean I think you have always had the right mindset. Take the limited release Apex 34. That was fantastic! I think if you make some tweaks but keep the overall classic style the same, maybe keep the old graphic. It could be something really special :)

@@ScottImbrie I wouldn't mind improvements if the spirit of the board was the same but that original shape and overall feel of the board was the best. I did crazier, faster things with boards that followed but I truly never owned a board as fun to ride as my old Apex 34. A few of my buddies had 37's and I always wanted one but never picked one up. If there's a new old release I'd be all over it! edit: I'd love to hear the story of the red one you pull out at 1:36 though! You say it wasn't supposed to be made but that was the version I had. My best friend and I took the trip to the Jersey warehouse and I bought it in person while we were there.

@@pantsandskate right on man, I crazy how everyone has their favorites. That Apex 34 is so freaking light its insane, to me that's the best part of that deck, and yes 1:36 the whole 'Apex 34' shape / design was never actually supposed to be a thing (at least initially). Awesome that you guys made it out to warehouse, wish we still had that thing haha PDX Warehouse is awesome too (the Portland area is worth the trip if you haven't checked it out yet) but the space we had in the old spot to just do whatever we wanted was pretty ridiculous. I don't know if we will ever luck into a spot like that again but I sure am hoping! I'll keep you guys posted as I really get into working on the new stuff, or in this case old stuff, there will be *a lot* between now and next spring. Any ideas, hit me up here (or whatever video) and I will try to get it in! _Scott

Yo seriously. Me too. It's kind of weird and enough time has gone along that you guys yourselves probably have gotten closer to some friends and further from some others. Slap some business requirements (on all sides) on that and obviously shit happens. I have also been a super bad friend relative to what I think most people expect, both because I am not great at keeping in touch and because I was super sick for like years (still working through it). Regardless I couldn't have said it better myself. A huge part of why I think the videos were so fun was that we were (in most instances) having that much fun ourselves. I hate shit that doesn't feel authentic, and it's really hard to be in front of a camera and be honest but that part (we were having fun, mostly) of all of those trips fully was. The piece I didn't necessarily know at the time is that those would be some of the most fun times I have ever had - which makes it even more fun to look back (like this!). Anyway, Getting better and seriously looking forward to whatever comes next. To your list I would add (in no particular order): - Nick Patrick - Joel Penkala - Derek Connor - Steve Egge - Kim Egge - Andy Lacata - Lindsay Lacata - Jay Cagney - Chris V. - Aleix Gaillimo - Brian James - Will Stephen - Aaron Stark - Gabrielle Nickas - Leif Enoksen - Cully Opila - Brett Ciabatini ...and seriously way more people than my lyme diseased memory is even allowing me to bring to mind. The point is that OS was sort of like an iceberg - way more was happening behind the scenes over the years than ever happened on the screen and all of those people made that work. That hasn't changed and is maybe even more true now than it was then.

You kidding me? Those guys straight killed it the last... how long we been doing this now? The longer you work on skateboards the more obvious it is how fucking difficult it is to make a good one. It's like Cooking. Everyone can make a burger, some just taste better. Some boards just feel good and some don't but regardless of your specific flavor preference sticking around making boards for any length of time supported solely by whatever you produce (no safety net) takes balls and talent. Hat's off to the crew at Loaded and my feeling is they are only getting better at what they are best at. Also thanks to Pablo and the crew for keeping us in Paris trucks and Otang thane hah! @originalskateboards
@originalskateboards 3 жыл бұрын
Yewwww Yeah man, I mean when you think about it there is NOT a whole ton of difference between a chopped Pintail and about 50% of the DH decks people are rocking. The stuff that IS different is stuff I want to see changed. Can't very well have 20 mil views on a freaking video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o76hoLVyutnSaYk.html) and just throw an overall shape concept people love in the garbage as an industry , at least not if we hope to make a living for our riders or brands. That said we need a lot more creativity on how to differentiate the stuff we are doing around some of these classic concepts from the china junk being pitched as just as good over on Amazon or Ebay. Not going anywhere until we sort those problems out and see the next generation come up, take the reigns and all help make this sport what it should be (99.9% not even then). Cheers dude! Thanks for showing what that old Pintail is capable of! _Scott

@@tjcochran4641 not going anywhere man, It was a little dicey when I was sick as shit for like 8 years up and down (hence the lack of sessions post Hawaii) but it's stabilized now due to a TON of work we did last year to get our systems where they should have been all along. Now we have more time to do all this stuff which helps crank out new boards (and hopefully fun times) while we spend less time accounting and counting screwed up inventory counts all over again. Sounds weird but that shit really lead to less time to spend doing the things we all loved about OS, I don't know if I was the only one that felt tied down by it but I fully feel excited to be back at the wheel giving it a go. We WILL be getting some new stuff out there that you guys can buy to support the war effort though, so just be sure to keep in touch and let me know what that should be so I don't go and make something lame that no one wants. I hear that dude! Something special about the place those old boards fall in today's industry. They weren't necessarily as surfy as a surf skate (rear steer / drive etc) and they weren't as stable downhill as today's Longboards but they were light as all heck and flexed in ways no board I have ridden did before or since. My goal is to give it a shot with the tech we now have access to in 2020 that never existed in 2007-2008 when we were developing that board and just see what happens. Shit it will be fun to mess around with even if no one ends up riding them besides us two haha

The parts of a longboard that will kill the experience are the bearings, wheels and trucks. That is where you will notice the most difference. If you can avoid buying a cheap €59.95 complete that would be super helpful to show you why we all love the sport so much. There are major differences in the components that really do make it less fun. That said I am all for getting a cheaper board and upgrading as you realize you love it. Just make sure the components are good, generally anything under €100.00 can be assumed to have inferior quality on some or all components (who knows what, but something). I know right? It had a lot to do with the bushings I think, short wheelbase was the only way to make those things carve hard enough to get the feeling right. These days we are SO spoiled with high end urethane it's ridiculous. Not only that but there is some even higher end stuff that is just hitting the market now that we should see standardized into trucks, wheels etc over the next 2-3 years which should boost it yet again. Who doesn't like to slide in control without even trying? Thanks for watching dude!

why do original trucks get so loose? and how do i tighten them?
@originalskateboards
@originalskateboards 3 жыл бұрын
THAT is a randomly complex question haha The first thing to realize is that compressed systems under pressure (your springs / tension setting in this case) don't always do well with vibrations. There is a HUGE amount of effort put in in all sorts of industries to try to stabilize and fix issues with stuff coming loose that is both vibrating and being attached by one method or another. *Tl;Dr:* The short fix / answer (at least for OS trucks) is to double nut your king pin which will keep it from loosening. ------------------------------------------ Feel free to stop here hah! ------------------------------------------ That said it will still (over time) get loose because OS trucks, unlike every *sane* design currently on the market, do have metal on metal contact in places (several places lol!) that was never fixed by way of a bushing or some such solution. So basically those metal on metal contact points ALSO help to losen your setup: - The kingpin on the hanger is twisted (on average) equally hard and equally as frequently in both directions, but in one direction the threads of the kingpin (that thread into the lock nut at the back of the truck / on the white wavecam side) actually loosen just a very slight amount every turn (particularly under pressure). - Also the lock tab (which slots into the White WaveCam) is aluminum which is metal on metal with the Tube that encases the White WaveCam. That means it wears out over time and the tolerances become wide (MUCH wider) and the lock tab needs to be replaced, the baseplate needs to be replaced or both. None of that shit was apparent when we reworked the design to use for skateboards back in 2002 but at this point I (unfortunately) know the issues like the back of my hand and what really needs to be done is the design needs to be improved in a major way to try to holistically address those problems. Not to mention the changes in the direction of the sport that have happened SINCE 2002 when we tried to make a skateboard that feels like a surfboard, because longboards weren't a thing with wheels. Between now and then it's more about triage to try to sort out all the stuff that got in the way of those fixes my first go round (business stuff not engineering stuff, but engineering stuff too) so we can do a better job fixing this stuff on a time frame of less than ~20 years. Who knows if that is possible or not but I have changed.. A LOT... as have my priorities. At the top of the list is being able to fix what's broken FAST(er). Thanks for watching dude! _Scott

@@originalskateboards Looks like the HST truck is having the lock tab metal on metal issue too. I have developed a patented surf truck as well - it took years to get it developed, produced and running. The way I see it the Original truck is offering awesome lean/ turn and a very special rebound. Now that all of the problems are clear, it would be a waste to not improve the original truck and get it running! Seismic G5 do not get even close just because they do not offer enough lean & are heavy. I think the original truck is the perfect truck for performance surfskates offering crazy lean and therefore perfect grip when used as rear truck. Cheers

Hey right on dude, What kind of riding you thinking about doing? For SURE we have decks that will handle that. The thing is that we actually make a handful of boards to support (easily) riders in the 250-280 range. That's a bit light for you but not much. The net result will be just a little more flex than you might have otherwise run into, but since we are already accounting for a heavier clientele it will for sure work. The other stuff we may need to work together on to tune is your Trucks / Bushings. Basically to work properly you will need a heavier bushing inside of your truck. This isn't a total requirement but if you are planning on going faster than 5 or 10mph at some point it might be good! Overall the recommendation is going to depend on your height and weight and then ALSO what kind of riding you want to do and how big your hills are. Hit me with what sort of stuff you might be into and we can figure something out. No pressure obviously. Funds aren't as easy to come by these days as they might be, but if you ever get the itch just know it's FOR SURE a possibility.
