[Longplay] Contra Arcade vs NES Utterly Pointless Comparisons ep 003

For best results view at 720p60fps. In today's Utterly Pointless Comparison I take a look at the Arcade and NES versions of Contra. You might know the game better as either Probotector or Gryzor. I'll also note that the Famicom version is considerably different than the NES version with some animated tiles, cutscenes and a between level map.
The video comparison starts at 4:21 for the impatient!
Aside from all the stuff mentioned in the video, here's a few bonus differences/notes.
1. The arcade has an end game jingle that plays after you defeat the alien heart that's missing from the NES version.
2. Arcade Contra is also inconsistent with it's weapon icons. Some weapon pick ups look like guns while others have the familiar bird icon with a letter in it. In the NES version all weapons pick-ups have a bird icon with a letter.
3. The NES has a pick up exclusive to it: The bomb icon that destroys all enemies on screen.

Not yet, at least. Thought about doing it, but the NES game is so different from the arcade game it'd involve a lot of 'dead air' for the arcade version. If I can find a way to make it work, though, I'd do it.

I did it again a few more times last year and a couple of weeks ago 😁 There aren't a lot of games I can consistently finish without dying at all but this is definitely one of them!

Wow its odd the arcade is so much more in alot of ways but it feels universally less appealing to me I'm hardly a fan of the series and have never been farther than 2 levels deep in the few I played but it is rare to see a game so "lacking" in compare to its progenitor but which rises so high and above the same!

Yeah, a lot of old Konami ports were interesting. They changed a lot of stuff up fairly often in their NES versions, and every now and then, despite weaker hardware, the NES games were more refined and played better than the arcade originals.

The nes version is superior, the arcade version should have been horizontal. The arcade version has superior graphics but the Nes’ gameplay is way better

The nes Version kill the Arcade. IT Play so much better and the Sound is amazing.

I agree that the NES version is definitely the better game, especially when it comes to gameplay. It was way more refined than the very rough (but still fun) arcade original. I'd also say the NES music is better, too!
