Check out this comparison of the arcade Super Contra and its NES port Super C! See the full arcade playthrough first, then the comparison right after - this one required a bit of a format change. Also, there's a special appearance by my dog at the end if you want to be shocked by limitless cuteness.

I prefer the NES version, despite the Arcade has better graphics. I genuinely think the sprites, the music and the sound effects in NES make the game more charismatic.

Before the homebrew explosion, I always thought that the Sega genesis could’ve had a very good port of the arcade game or even a mega mix of arcade graphics and sound overlaying the NES version.

I'd love to see someone take on a Genesis port. I'd even do the music for it if anyone works on it.

A Sega CD arcade port of Super Contra was in the works back in 91'/92 but for some reason it got cancelled. That would have been awesome! Is there any way we could get the word out to the homebrew community that this game should be ported to Genesis. Hopefully a Sega CD port if possible. I also would've loved to have seen an arcade port of the original Contra for the NEC Turbografx 16 system. I know the console could have handled a faithful port of it if they tried.@@InglebardGaming

I don't know exactly wich magazine it was in, or what issue but I positively remember seeing a small section about Super Contra supposedly was coming to Mega-CD and it showed a small screen shot of the game. I tried to hunt the issue down but i had no luck. Suffice to say it was cancelled very shortly after it was announced, and never heard from again. I was sure it was from EGM magazine back in 91/92 but don't know for sure. @@InglebardGaming

Definitely. I'm not huge on sound effects but they're probably my favorite explosion sounds of the era.

there was a place in california the family used to take me to, sam's town? I fondly remember playing this one there it was quite tough!! nice to know they threw in some console-exclusive levels to make up for the length, always a nice bonus. also cutest cameo ever, haha. :P

I love both versions. I love the music in the arcade version. The only time I ever saw it in the wild was at a movie theater in Johnson City, Tennessee :]

I used to play this in the local arcade often. I remember when my friend told me about it and I rushed down to the arcade as soon as I could. People used to watch me play it and marvel at how fast I could hit the shoot button - those were the days, lol!

@@InglebardGaming The NES version does have some of the double pickup thing, I know it works for the fireball weapon and makes it explode four directions instead of two, if you hold the button down it will shoot a super fireball. I'm wrong, it's just the super shot. It's been awhile. I usually play with the spread gun too but it's fun to go through the game with the fireball for shits and giggles.

Yeah, its just the rapid version. I'll grab another weapon every now and then, but 90% of the time it's all about the spread gun!

Super C was my Xmas Gift from 1990. I still play it from time to time and finish the game but I still haven't played the arcade version although I have it on my xbox so I guess I'll give it a try. Maybe the reason why I didn't give it a shot is because I consider the first Arcade Contra inferior to the NES port and that somehow made me avoid playing it. Great video by the way.

Yeah, arcade Contra is a bit weak, but arcade Super Contra is WAY better. Give it a try!

Never played either of these versions, my only Contra experiences came with the SNES version and later the MD's Probotector. Enjoyed watching you play through, the NES version is surprisingly faithful. Well done on the 50th video of your comparisons which are far from pointless, long may they continue!

Super Contra was probably one of the Arcades that revolutionized the cinematic Attract Mode. Konami at the time was able to make most games with twice the memory compare to what other companies had to work with in the late 80s, so they could use the extra amount of data for the quality and presentation.

I played the arcade version quite a bit at our local arcade. Always went with rocket weapon x2 albeit your shot had to be accurate; it is was quick eliminating bosses. Nes version wasn't bad... did find some of the new boss encounters lame - head boss of the game was not bad.

I own the japanese SUPER C..i know...NES/FC is better...more meat for the price etc...but, at the time, i d gladly had the ARCADE game at home over the 8 bit port ha!

I really wish Konami had been on board with the Genesis from the start. Imagine getting ports of this, Gradius 2, and their various brawlers back just after the launch of the system. Oh well, at least the NES port is well done.

Love em both, the Nes version is a brilliant conversion. Konami pushed the Nes hard. Especially with Gradius 2, Crisis force, with enhancement mapper chips in the carts, awesome 👌

While I'd have been very happy with the NES game back in the day (and having no NES I had to make do with Midnight Resistance aka Contra Too), I'm glad that these days the original is so easily accessible. I agree with you, the arcade version has the better look and feel. I was surprised to find out a few years ago that there are Amiga and DOS ports of Super C. What I'm not suprised about is that they are complete trash, tho.

Yeah, Midnight Resistance is pretty good too, always liked it despite its slower pace and less frantic action. And yeah, the dos and Amiga versions of Super Contra are unbelievably awful!
