Check your local scrap metal yards or a local trucking company to see if they have any junk semi truck bumpers. You'd have lots of metal to work with. I'm really surprised that you didn't go with a receiver hitch on the front for mounting the winch this way you could put it on either end of the vehicle.

For the winch hook... look into a daystar winch isolator. It works as a line weight; and also keeps your hook snug against the rollers without damage. Its like $20 if its in your budget.

haha my 97 ZJ not only flashed the fog lights, it would also flash the headlights!!!! Had to pull the lighting panel and resolder about 5 cold solder joints!!

the grills on the 93-95 zjs are smaller and straight across like the cherokee making custom bumpers easy to make on those years

What about welding the hitch and adding more supports for the hitch, then make new bumper brackets for the stock mounting location and hook the bumper up to the hitch bar and stock mounting locations?

From factory there's also clips under the headlight assembly you have to take them out to get the bumper off normally

Maybe reinforcing that winch plate with an integral entry angle skid plate and a stinger to help protect the winch could be a way to have another recovery point.

Since this is the cheap jeep you should hockey together the turn signal, just on principal. When it comes time for a front bumper you could use the plastic one as a template for the angles and cuts you want to make. Just cut it up into smaller sections to work with.

dude , quick easy fix for those fog lights, if you so choose to keep them instead of tossing them/selling them... take the headlight switch out, open it up, and solder the board... VERY common issue with our ZJ's... Also, if you're planning on selling the fogs, i can trade you the full 6 piece headlight set for the fogs... only thing i'm missing on my ZJ is the fog lights... Keep up the great work and as always, I'm enjoying this Cheap Jeep build!

If you could find a piece of 6 or 8 inch round heavy pipe you could cut two corners for each side and use square tube in the middle on the back for a bumper. Then build off of the tow hitch and the factory bumper mounts. Just a thought. Looking good man.

hey you can use the fender bolt to hold the front bumper on. I did on my zj and it wont fall off even when its hooked on a rock.

I just cut that front "cross member" out, replaced it with a piece of 2x6 that I opened up to set the winch in. That gave me a winch mount that didn't stick out so far, ruining my approach angles. I mounted it to the unibody by opening up those holes leading into the frame rails, which perfectly fit 2x4 inside, which I then sandwiched with the frame rails with some 1/4 plate out the outsides and ran some grade 8 bolts through the entire thing. I saved probably 4 inches of clearance, have a stronger mount, and it was probably less than $50 in material. Now I just need to get around to building a bumper off of that winch mount...

I'd suggest a sheet of 1/8" (for less budget) or 3/16" (more budget) sheet of steel and then you can make a rear bumper, side armor, and skid plates all from a $80-100~ sheet for 1/8 and about $120-150 for 3/16. Other stuff you can make too but that's pretty common stuff and will take most of the sheet.

I have a video Idea for cheap jeep. Painting coil springs experimental. I was looking for videos on painting coil springs and saw Plasti-dip and rust-oleum as the cheap solutions but not that many videos on youtube for either. Try plasti-dip on driver side and rust-oleum on the right. See which holds up best to chipping and peeling, which looks the best, which one sheds mud and junk when cleaned.....

looks like the rough country shares the same design as an ENGO winch. engo winch is the toughest winch I've ever owned. the guy I sold it to says the same thing. I just recently sold my warn ti 9.5 and got a new model engo e9000. winch cost 299 shipped to the door. I picked up some dyneema line for 130. the whole thing weighs less than 50 lbs.

Have you ever mentioned in previous episodes what tires you intend to end up with? I'm sure you're probably wanting to get through some of the other items first and figure out what you have left to spend on tires. I'm a month and a half away probably from trying to figure out what resides behind the plastic on my KJ.

Nice the Cheap Jeep is coming along nicely! I didn't expect you to be able to get a winch for it! Good call on the Front bumper, making a custom one would have been too much for the Cheap Jeep, but after cutting the stock one it looks nice. How much budget do you have left?

Matt just so u know ur fog lights button was pushed in if u couldn't get them to shut off that's why that lever is how bright ur interior lights are the button to the right is to turn on and off ur fog lights just saying

buy a cheap small pair of vise grips, that's what I use on my jeeps to hold up the hatch. you can get them for like $3 at harbor freight

Has Rough Country went up in quality lately? I was under the impression their stuff was cheap entry level stuff. At least in the realm of suspension. I did a 2.5 inch lift on my TJ with all new lowers CA's, shocks, springs, and a track bar. The only thing I haven't replaced is the springs. And to be fair, their front lower's are built well. Their joints, at least at the time that I purchased them, were no good. I called them once and customer service was really good. No complaints on that front. They sent me new ones free of charge; they just wore out again in a matter of months. Ended up buying Currie Johnny joints for the Rough Country lower fronts and am still running them.

A pre face-lifted ZJ would be better, because the front end is strait all the way across. You wouldn't have to deal with toughs pain in the ass curves.
