It's interesting that almost all of the teams that went on to win/compete for multiple cups all had some huge adversity in the playoffs a few years prior to really becoming a threat to the more experienced teams.

@@parkerb1970 Bucs have had a loyal fanbase for basically their entire existence, lightning have sold out for like 9 years running, and the Rays (despite being owned by idiots) are one of the best teams in baseball. Small market, but successful.

Even then, the team they beat (NJ) was only the sixth seed in the East. It was really two Cinderellas.

If I recall, the kings turned their season around after hiring Darryl sutter. With him at the helm, they keep a much better pace than an 8h seed pace

Last time Calgary should have won they let the cup get away in game 6 not because of that over the line puck, in all other Canadians on the South side might lift The Cup today if Habs don’t show up again and get sloppy.

Kind of a common theme that those unexpected runs end up with a loss in the finals. There's far fewere finalists that made such runs among the winners.

Thanks Shannon; I love these kinds of history videos. I like how often first losing appearance in the finals is an indication of a future successful return to the finals a few years later, as teams learn what it takes to win.

08 and 09 sort of made Hossa an anti-Maroon. Back to back appearances in the Finals with different teams who faced each other two years in a row and losing back to back.

I will always remember the 95-96 nhl season I was 12 years old the 1st time.i would be watching the leafs religiously, I remember that season in the western Conference it was like Detroit, Colorado and Chicago, than the rest 4 through 8 all having less than 500 record and only separated by 2 points.

I remember when the Red Wings lost to the Avs in '96. I was a pessimist about them ever winning it and they played poorly the next season in comparison. Good thing they got their act together. Not too many teams can survive choking 3 years in a row.

I remember there was a lot of talk that the Devils were going to get smoked by the Red Wings in 95. That Team was stacked and ran through the playoffs. And then they met the Devils. Great to see 5 of the best defenseman to ever play on the ice in that one with Niedermayer, Stevens, Coffey, Lindstrom, and Fetisov.

By 1984, the Islanders had already played an extra season of games from their 1980-1983 playoffs. They were definitely worn out. Not something you want to be against a young and hungry Oilers team. And yes, the Flyers had some excellent teams in the 80's with strong netminding.

Dont feel sorry for Shannon and his fandom. In his lifetime, his teams have won the Stanley cup 2 times and have made the finals 9 times.

His three teams on this board (MIN/DAL, BOS and VAN) are 2-11 in the Finals. And one of the two wins was against another of his teams. That’s gut wrenching.

that 87 flyers team was so damn good. they gave the Oil all they had. and that was without Tim Kerr. came back on the three games they won from two goal deficits. i was lucky enough to attend games three amd six. game six was one of the best experiences of my life! I'd put that 87 team up against any other cup winner. the bitch of it is, that is the closest we have been to a cup! 97 was a forgettable, abysmal failure

After the Kings didn't make the playoffs in '94 there was a place on Manchester Blvd. that sold jerseys, shirts, etc. which put up a sign that said, "All Kings gear Penthouse to Outhouse Sale".

1982 Canucks, 1991 North Stars were the only under .500 teams to make it to the Stanley Cup finals. This year's Canadiens also if you went by the old point system

Lots of people think the Isles could have won that fifth straight Cup in 1984 if the NHL hadn’t switched the finals from 2-2-1-1-1 to 2-3-2.

What this basically tells me is Canadian teams make the Finals regularly enough post 1993... they just cannot clinch it as Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Vancouver and probably Montreal have all taken a crack at it. And let's be honest Between 2000-2012 a Canadian team really should have won the Cup!

And Winnipeg and Toronto both made the conference finals but couldn’t make the final. All 7 Canadian teams have come quite close but none of them could get it done. Perhaps it was the pressure?

When I look back at all those playoffs( yes I'm old) I'm amazed at how a team could capture lightning in a bottle for a playoff run....and not have that same run the next season(s) First off a lot of good teams lose in the finals, second you have great runs(lightning) by Cinderella teams,that run into a cup favorite in the finals...and run out of gas I think if Cgy run in 2004, where they were a good team after that year, but the game changed from a heavy banging clutch and grab, to a more fluid game.....ie they started changing how they called the game( for the better)

It should be noted that '93 was the high-water mark of the Gretzky Era in Los Angeles. All those trades, all those free agents, one measly trip to the Finals. Then followed four straight playoff misses and Gretzky bailed. '93 was highlighted by Robitaille's record setting year (most goals in a season by a LW) and Gretzky coming back after missing 2/3 of the season from back surgery.

This is probably why we haven’t seen a game 7 OT in the finals since the 1950s because the teams aren’t evenly matched very often.

Also Dallas out of no where in 2020, there was another contender/incident at the time that sort of knocked out a lot of other teams for them. So that one is the most "believable" due to situation.

I see numerous teams where a goalie( and sometimes defensemen) carried their team , deep into the playoffs, got those timely goals or that Torres player who scores way beyond his avg. Bottom line why I like hockey playoffs( beyond the years of best of three or even best of five) compared to other leagues, you have the favorites continue to win with the odd upset.....in hockey there is always upsets, even when fav are playing well

Nashville was 16th overall in 2017, just wanted to point that out. Also, while Philly was 18th overall in the league in 2010, they weren't the lowest overall team to make the playoffs. That was the 19th overall Montreal Canadiens (I get that that isn't the subject of this video but I wanted to clarify). In fact, until Montreal made the Finals this year, Nashville was the first team since the Original Six Era to be the lowest overall team in the season (that being 2017) to make the playoffs and make it to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Interesting. From that list, only 5 teams haven't been to the Finals and/or won the Cup since 1981: Winnipeg/Arizona, Columbus, Minnesota Wild, Atlanta/Winnipeg and Toronto. Although Minnesota hockey fans saw Finals games in their city when the North Stars were there. Toronto fans have to be feeling the frustration. No Cup since '67 and not even a trip to the Finals since then.

in 1995, the only great "teaching moment" Detroit passed on was don't skate around with the Campbell Bowl like it's the Stanley Cup. It hasn't been touched since.

They were wholly not ready for the Devils. The trap was unlike anything they had faced up until that series and they didn't come close to beating it.

@@TheHockeyGuy Oh for sure, that's what stifled them in 95, but they didn't alter their game as a result of that to win in 97. They kept their compete level and rode the rivalry with the Avs to gain a momentum that not even the Legion of Doom could overcome.

2010 Flyers reversed sweep the Bruins, and I'm still mad about it. They denied us of the best eastern conference finals thee could've been, I.E. yet another epic encounter between Montreal and Boston :( Also... Montreal still ain't out of the picture yet. However slim, there's still a chance for a reverse sweep this year! 😭 (no I'm not really expecting it but a man can dream!!)

Connective, tissue between [ Cinderella runs Best never won Cup finalists ]. ▪︎Funny, how Nordiques & Whalers seem to get no love, often upsetting Adam's division kings, Bruins/Habs/Sabres, 82' - 90'. ▪︎Funny, how bruins hardly on here, save for this year, 2023. Give em, the 83' slot. ▪︎Bizarre, how board hinting at Oilers 8 cup dynasty, or little Flames, Penguins, or Avalanche & Red wing dynasty. ▪︎Sometimes, the slot ought to remain empty, because the team that won cup, deserve to win cup. OR, it's the finalist. ▪︎One and done, teams are not very impressive. Not, picking on the great 8 or the caps, but capitals 2018 and so many others, are good examples.
