The 04 avalanche had Kariya, Selanne, Sakic, Forsberg, Foote, Blake, Hejduk, and Tanguay. It's incredible how underwhelming that team ended up being. Philadelphia had a stacked roster that year too.

If they're all healthy, absolutely they should've been on that list. Unfortunately Kariya wasn't the same player after getting concussed by Stevens, and Selanne was playing with a hurt knee, and Forsberg's physical decline was becoming more and more apparent. That team played hurt.

Unfortunately this was Colorado's first year without Roy. It was also the first year they didn't finish first in the division. And they never got another chance with this group since the season was cancelled the following year. Sadly after the lockout the Avs were no longer perennial contenders and instead became an average on-again/off-again playoff team.
@MDK2_Radio

@@ranchosdelnorte for all the love and respect Pierre Lacroix got as a GM before the lockout, he failed to adjust to the new reality of the salary cap that first year and both Foote and Forsberg walked because of that - Colorado definitely could have kept one if the front office had accepted that they weren’t going to keep both with lowball offers. In my opinion that was the real start of the decline, though obviously it did hurt that they couldn’t find a solid starting goaltender following Roy’s retirement.

He was unbelievable in '99,I was at game 6...old Mcnichols sports arena...Avs up 1-0,& 3-2 in the series...Avs hit a post,& Belfour kept em in it...til Dallas woke up...rest is history. Off top of my head,I think Belfour was even better in 2000,than 1999. Roy was very good,Belfour otherworldly...that was the difference,& that they let Dallas mug us both years.

The 2010s are such a funny decade for the Caps. I'm a Pittsburgh fan living in DC and it was always a joke to hear fans hype them up because I knew they'd blow it. But I won't lie, I was extremely worried in 2017 because I knew the Caps had a better roster and they were built for the sole purpose of beating Pitt. Then in 2018 they seemed to have taken a page out of Pittsburgh's book and decided to not win the President's Trophy and instead coast and stay healthy until the playoffs start. I didn't think we had a chance in that series and it showed when game 5 and 6 rolled around. That team was definitely not their most talented but they were just refusing the agony of losing again. For the 3rd time in 3 years, the winner of the PIT-WAS series was champion. It's like the entire playoffs were decided in Round 2. Lots of respect for the teams the Caps have put together over the years. It's a shame they only have 1 cup to show for it.

I'd argue that 2002 should also be the Avs. If Patrick Roy didn't celebrate early with the Statue of Liberty goal that Shanahan scored (after making a ridiculous save on Yzerman), then the Avs, who are up 3-2 on the series, would have had a much bigger chance at winning that game. If he did just that, the Avs would go on and beat the Hurricanes in 4 or 5 games. 2004 was also a dream team that failed since we had Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya.

They were the best of the remaining 4 teams, period.

Even though the 06-07 sabres were better statistically they were favourites having won the presidents trophy The 05-06 sabres were only better or scarier in the playoffs and the last month of the Regular season as they were an underdog with something to prove no one picked the sabres over philly and ford berg but they murdered them. No one picked buffalo over the pizza line sens who I think won that year’s presidential trophy and they murdered them. Lol However jn 06-07 they were just way better in the regular season and the playoffs they went 8-3 in the first two round no issues there. But the east finals Ottawa wanted revenge and got it winning in five though the last game was jn OT, getting revenge for the year we won in five before that (sabres when I say we.) I can say we damn it I’ve watched this team since 93 and stuck with them all this time

@@MixerMadness Here's the thing, 05/06 got hot at the right time (heading into the playoffs), but also had something the 06/07 team didn't have: Grier, McKee and Dumont. Grier was grit and a random scoring threat, McKee was an A+ veteran D with Finals experience and an expertise in shot blocking, and Dumont was another veteran with deep playoff experience and one hell of a forward who I believe went on to a 30+ goal season in Nashville that year. Regier thought Kotalik could replace Dumont.... WRONG. 06/07 was a high scoring team but they were weaker without those 3 guys, that weakness got exposed when they struggled against the first two teams, Ottawa studied the tape and then took advantage and humiliated us. In my opinion, 06/07 was great for chintzy regular season feel goodiness... but 05/06 was the greatest playoff team I ever saw.

@@30AndHatingIt even with a better performance from Miller in 07' than 06', that was more than offset by just how soft those 07' Sabres were without the three guys mentioned. In 2007 the Sens, who themselves got pushed around by the Ducks, pushed the Sabres around. Regier's biggest miscalculation was going pure speed/skill coming out of the 06' run, rather than just leaning that way but retaining some of the grit.

2010 was an amazing season to be a hab(young at least), The madness that was the Caps playoffs, the incredulity of beating the Penguins!?!?!? Then it all came crumbling down against the Flyers who clearly had more gas in the tank. Yaroslav Halak basically became a hero that season and a good portion of us Habs fans went nuts when he was traded(I may be misremebering) that off-season, not realising that Carey Price's time would come. P.S. There's rumours that the Halak stop sign still stands in Washington

The Flyers having more gas in the tank doesn't make much sense if you think about it. They had to win a shootout on the last day of the season to get into the playoffs then right before the Canadiens series they had to come back from being down 3-0 as well as 3-0 in game 7 so in reality that team should have been emotionally spent but they weren't.

This is the second time that after reading the title of one of your videos, I thought it was going to be something completely different. As for what it was, great job. What I thought it was going to be was "eras of teams (that you could identify by a certain players presence there) that didn't win the cup." Which confused me as Colorado Sakic was the thumbnail, who of course won several championships with that team. I think that would be a very interesting video for you to make. Here's some examples: 1.) The Gretzky Kings era: not just The Great One, as a playmaker first and goal scorer second, he certainly had some great people to pass to in Kurri, Granato, Robitaille, Lang, Donnelly, and Sandstrom. As well as blue-line support from Coffey, Blake, Holy Zhitnik, Sydor and McSorley. And while no one would argue that Hrudey was the best, he was certainly good enough to get it done with this cast in front of him. While Barry Melrose was my favorite commentator, I did lose some confidence in him when I realized he was the head coach that couldn't get it done with this lineup. 2.) The Hull Blues era: call him a defensive liability if you will, but he did put that to rest in his stints with later teams (and I think there are much better candidates for the title of defensive liability... Bure... Ozolinsh) this guy wasn't the fastest, strongest or most athletic but was absolutely legendary in his ability to put the puck in the net. So good that it seemed all you needed to do was surround him with a team of defensive-minded players and he would take care of the rest. And he was there for 11 years... during his prime... and no cups... 3.) The Roenick/Chelios Blackhawks era: OK, I think this team's Achille's Heel was depth as when you looked further down the lineup the names became less impressive. But you had one forward (Roenick), one defenseman (Chelios), and one goaltender (Belfour) who were all legendary in their position at the time. And they had some pretty good support, other forwards like J Murphy, Goulet, Amonte and (the very beginning of) Daze gave Roenick some support goals, and having depth down the middle of Roenick, Sutter, and Savard was impressive. Chelios was the focus on the blueline, but Suter was pretty good too and guys like Smith, Weinrich and Carney were hard to play against. And of course, Belfour was one of the few goalies at that time that you could actually put in the same category as Roy or Brodeur. Still, 8 years with a great team, but no cups. 4.) The Bourque Bruins era: need I say more? Another interesting idea for a video that you gave me during this video would be an alternate history video if some of the teams that were around during another team's dynasty era were transplanted 10 years in the future or past. The biggest example would be if mid-90's Colorado was transplanted 10 years in the future - if this was the case, how would mid-90's Colorado fare in the late 2000's, which I feel was a less talent-heavy league than it was during the mid 90's (feel free to disagree, though.) And just how many cups would Detroit have won if they didn't have to run into Colorado every year? Not just the times they were knocked out by Colorado, but also considering how many times they won that series but were too worn out after the battle to go all the way?

GrassValleyGreg It absolutely was the Avs. They were a Statue of Liberty away from an easy SCF. They were miles better than the Leafs

Great video, but it more or less proves the point that I made on your best teams of the 90s where I said CO, DET, DAL, and NJ could easily be considered a 4 way tie for the best team or at least DET 1 and the other three tied for two

The only one I called was the 1998 Stars team, but I loved that late 90s early 00s Western Conference battles with Detroit Colorado Dallas and St Louis, they always made for fun series, even Dallas lost... a lot.

As an un-biased Red Wings fan I think the entire middle row should be Red Wings(not including the years they won the SC) and add 2009-2012.

I agree except for 2010 onwards they lost a step in 2010 that they never got back

As another totally not biased Red Wings fan, I agree. And it’s not even unreasonable. The entire decade of the 2000ds they won their division ever year and never had less than 4 HOF players on the roster

I think Buffalo was the best team to not win the cup in 06 and 07.

That 09 Bruins team was awesome! Knocked out Montreal in the first round then went to a game seven against Carolina where they lost on a dumb tip in OT. Such a great team!

I’m not too sure about the 80s because I wasn’t a hockey fan yet but your choices are pretty good. I’d like to see a video on the best team to win the Cup whether they did or didn’t win it that year.
