With Voigtlander finally announcing the long rumored 21mm Nokton, I thought it was a good time to look at my favorite workhorse lens, the 21mm Ultron.
I'm glad to see more ultra wide, ultra fast lenses on the market but which one is right for you?
If you are someone who uses a variety of cameras then the Nokton may not be what you are looking for. The ultron is similarly specked with the versatile Leica M mount, which can be adapted to the plethora of full frame mirror less cameras on the market today. It can also be enhanced with Voigtlanders own VM E close focus adapters, which allows M mount lenses to focus closer than the standard CFD on sony E mount bodies.
also sorry for the focus and audio issues...
The 21mm nokton is slated to have some interesting features, including the ability to transmit data and enable a punch in focus when manual focusing. We will have to see when the lens comes out but for sony users that could definitely make it appealing, but it will come at a premium cost.
which lens is right for you?

Im so glad they finally released the Nokton for Leica M. I use these lenses for video and I have been waiting for Voigtlander to release a wide angle Nokton so I can use a variable ND for my video shooting. Had been convincing myself I could saw the hood off the Ultron and thank God I didn't have to!

It is great to see it available in one of the most versatile and adaptable mounts with a filter thread. I've been impressed by voigtlanders modern lenses and I'm sure for video the nokton is great! There aren't too many ultra fast 21mm lenses out there so it's much appreciated.

I've the Ultron 21/1.8 and it's a great performer. I use it on my M240 in my press photography. You can really make dramatic shots with a 21 mm and in low light it's also good.

I have used the ultron on my m9 and it is also dramatic and lets you get some low light shots with deep-focus. The images are very sharp and when I used it on my a7s with close focus adapter you can get some pretty wild closeups!

It's often the ones with the most basic talking heads setups who make the best images. Love the look of this lens. I'm going to have to get the Nokton though so I can adapt large filters.

Voigtlanders 21mm offerings are great KZfaq lenses when adapted to mirror less. The focal length and ability to focus close is great! Sony's own wide angle fast primes are stiff competition though because even at 20mm~24mm wide open still needs focus tracking for a talking head segment

I think it should be a good lens to add to the kit you have! For Sony users it may be the right choice, but for me I use a variety of cameras so the Ultron suits my style. コメントありがとうございました。広角、絞り明るいレンズはとても珍しくてフォクトレンダーはいつもいいレンズ出してますからNokton 21ミリもたのしみですね!

Enjoyed the street photos. 👍 The release of the Sony 20mm f1.8 mKes for another option against the Nokton. AF doesn't seem that important as you get that wide. Although maybe with eye autofocus you could just not worry about your zone focus, go max aperture and get that shutter speed up so faster moving subjects are sharper?

Thank you so much for the comment! I was really happy to hear about the Sony 20mm 1.8. It is at a reasonable price point and the autofocus would be great for youtube and some video work. As for street photography its probably best to use manual focus just in case but it is definitely a welcomed addition!

Wish the 21mm f/1.4 Nokton had been around when I purchased my Leitz 21mm f/1.4 Summilux.
@TheWholePicture
@TheWholePicture 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure the quality of the summilux is much better though. Of course it comes at a price but I found that all of the modern summilux lenses are extremely sharp and render great images even at f1.4. With voigtlander lenses it can be hit or miss and I even found the light transmission from the f1.8 at 1.8 was similar to the light transmission from my contax biogon 21mm wide open at 2.8... but of course the voigtlanders are good value for money haha

I was near to buy the 1.8 when the rumors of the 1.4 come out. But the 1.8 can be found at 600 usd. Would like to ask you , how it is in the corner on a7? I even have techart
@TheWholePicture
@TheWholePicture 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you for the comment. 600 USD is a great price for the ultron! Performance in the extreme corners is slightly worse than the center for sure, especially at f/1.8. For my use it isnt a problem and its difficult to see the issues without first zooming in to the photo. The issue is typically blurred corners for the foreground but for the background things tend to stay sharp. Then again shooting at f/1.8 even on 21mm can leave things blurry so I do try to hit the focus as accurately as I can! Unfortunately I dont have any charts but if you have any other questions ill try to answer them!

SHOOT FILM NOT GUNS thank your for your reply,... Yes, I intend to use it at 1.8 but going to Europe soon so for panoramic, cathedrals etc I will be on F8 or 11, so at those aperture it does well?
@TheWholePicture
@TheWholePicture 5 жыл бұрын
No problem! I think the performance at 1.8 is very acceptable at night or dark places where any loss in quality is more difficult to perceive. If you are stitching panoramas then maybe cropping in a little bit could help in the corners. It does tend to vignette at f/1.8 but at f/8 and 11 the performance is very good. I would say the only thing is the starbursts, they are very apparent in street lights and other sources of bright light. At f/8 and 11 the star it produces is very defined and so it is a unique look for sure but if its not something you are interested in it may be difficult to avoid. But in general the performance at smaller apertures is quite good.

This new version has more advanced glass as well as focusing with floating elements, so should be a fair bit sharper especially at close range and the chromatic aberration is automatically removed.

@@TheWholePicture I prefer manual focus, using focus magnifier on a function button is so clutch with sonys. had one question, the adapter is a e to m just dummy one, assuming. so on a full frame is it still a 21mm? how much does that conversion effect focal length with leica m lenses ?
@TheWholePicture
@TheWholePicture 3 жыл бұрын
Hey no problem, a lenses focal length doesn't change regardless of what camera you use it on it the size of the sensor that would affect that. There may be some small differences in sensor hight and width on M bodies and sony bodies but it shouldn't affect the angle of view. I use the voigtlander close focus adapter and it's really good with this lens, let's you get in really close when you need it!

or i think its called a speed boosted, adapter with correcting glass
@TheWholePicture
@TheWholePicture 3 жыл бұрын
I see, yeah unfortunately there is no way to use a focal reducer for m mount lenses, the flange distance doesn't allow for any extra glass and many lenses have glass protruding into the body. If you get a full frame sony youll get the full frame look from the lenses! I still use the original a7s and I love the first generations size with small film lenses, it might be something you'd be interested in too since you have those lenses.

This video puzzles me. Firstly, comparing the two at all, before knowing the performance of the nokton, is just not right. Yes the ultron is a great lens, but that doesn't mean that the nokton cannot still be superior. IT may be tempting to think that the lens design is more or less the same, but as far as I can figure, this is not the case. Yes, they are similar, but we have seen that in other lenses, that are like night and day. Secondly, the arguments. The ultron is lighter? Maybe, maybe not. This is after all an e-mount users perspective, or the nokton wouldn't be very interesting, thus you have to include an adapter. Adaptability. Would it be nice to have lenses that can be adapted to every body? Sure, but that is not how it work. Ultimately what matters if that is can be adapted to E-mount, if it is to be an alternative, not the other way around, and it is almost always better, not to use an adapter, for a variety of reasons. I don't really consider these 'arguments', and in every other way, at least on paper, the Nokton does seem superior, so in my mind there are really only two arguments, for now. Price (maybe, I'm not really sure) and availability.
@TheWholePicture
@TheWholePicture 5 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for the comment. I think in the end I just wanted to talk about the Ultron and thought that this comparison would be timely but it is admittedly click-baity and cannot come to anything conclusive without the other lens. I should have kept the review more focused, say for Leica users, but I'm still trying different formats and seeing what works. Thank you for the suggestions, I will take them into account going forward.

Tell me. Which are those reasons? Looks like you don’t know very well what adapting M Mount lenses or any other vintage glass is. Almost to the point that you can buy a better performing vintage glass or new design for adapting at lower price tag while the actual native similar alternatives could be as x2-x10 times more expensives. That is the case with Pancolar 50mm 1.8, Flektogon 35mm f2.8, or Elmarit R 90mm f2.8 on cheap side at vintage and VM Nokton 35mm f1.2, Summicron M ASPH 50mm f2, or APO Planar 85mm f1.4 on premium modern side. Those are few, but there are tons of examples of glass that modern mounts lack of. Nikkor Noct, Zeiss Otus, Voigtlander Heliar, Leica Summicron, ISCO Cinegon, Voigtlander APO Lanthar, Rollei Apogon... and every single thorium lens. You can’t buy modern thorium lenses due to the rare earth element thorium glass is no longer available in modern consumer products. Adding info to this, those lenses also are offering unique design and performing optic articles with improved performace for many artistic purpose. For example, the yellowing, which is provided by the radiation decay, could act as a built in yellow filter and light transmision reductor, lower than ND 2 which is impressive for product, portrait and every single discipline claiming close focus performance, bokeh quality, or black and white photography. This UNIQUE combo can’t be found today as thorium glass is no longer available and the yellowing process takes several years to increase significantly the goldish saturation of the glass. Under UV exposing period, the glass can be “cleaned” and you can take advantage of the thorium’s excelent dielectric permittivity, which is a strong bonus for shooting wide open withouth experimenting crucial softness as you’ll have with a similar price category more modern lens. For example, the Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar sold at less than 200€ is certainly similar quality alternative to the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm f1.8 being better at many aspects. Lower price, better all-metal housing, and general performance at sharpness, bokeh, color, contrast, and texture rendering for my taste are similar or better depending the situation. Plus to that, the 1950’s glass is still usable for profesional use as for earning money with photography. Good luck, your Sony cheap-plastic and electronic articles are not going to work 70 years past like all metal will do perfectly. Incomes? Exif data? Fuck that, my clients and I still chose always the total look that the lens is giving instead the minor flaws or lacking features while adapting lenses.
