Put down a tarp when you are digging into the pay layer. Easier way clean it up.

All the soil at the bottom you moved should be checked also as any gold shedding off that area will drop down and slowly make its way down to the river. The hardpack is called concretion, as it's like a natural concrete...it may also contain gold...clay acts like a false bottom trapping gold also, so good to check the top inch or two of clay. Yes the big gold should be with the big heavy rocks but will work its way down slowly. Test...test and then test again...end of the day the smaller gold may weigh more than any potential nuggets you might come across...you need to face the camera when talking as that river is mighty loud and in parts was harder to hear you.
