At the height of Joss Whedon’s television success in 2002 - the “Buffyverse” had ruled over teen TV for a few years already - Fox struck a deal with the creator for a series unlike anything he’d done before. “Firefly,” a space Western centered on a group of people existing on the fringes of deep space pioneer society, ran for a single season in 2002 before it was dropped by the network.
Although Fox couldn’t see “Firefly’s” value, its fans certainly have. The short-lived series is a classic in its own right, and rumors continue to swirl regarding a well-deserved reboot. So what’s the story behind this beloved show? This is the untold truth of “Firefly.”

So, I bought a DVD and it had an ad with clips from other movies on it. Some of those clips (very brief) were from a movie called "Serenity". "Oh, a scifi movie I've never heard of before," I thought. Then, as I went down the DVD aisle at a few stores, I saw "Serenity" and it had a weird picture of River on the cover. That kind of turned me off, but I'd watch that first DVD a few more times and kept seeing those clips. So, one day, walking down the DVD aisle again, I decided "Eh, why not?" and bought it. Boom, great movie with great interesting characters that had already been established. The movie had a TV series feel to it. Then, one day, I found the entire "Firefly" series in one inexpensive DVD set. Bought it when I found it. The series felt exactly like the movie. Unfortunately, I knew the end of the story, but I liked the (unaired) end of the series that introduced Jubal Early - an insane bounty hunter who was very intelligent, very skilled and obviously very deadly. If the series had continued, he would have been a great recurring character (given he didn't die in space as he was set adrift in a spacesuit) I hope they do bring back the series and not as a reboot.

@Thane Celli Personally I don't think Shepherd Book was there to add much of a religious message into the show so much as to provide a counterpoint to Mal. The Shepherd was someone whose past experiences had led to his "finding faith", whereas for Mal it was just the opposite. In the first episode as everyone aboard Serenity is about ready to eat Book asks if they mind if he says Grace. Mal's response - "Only if you say it out loud.". Yet back in the opening scenes where they are about to enter battle against the Alliance in Serenity valley you see Mal lift a cross hanging about his neck to his lips just before entering the fight. Mal lost the faith that he'd previously because of what he experienced in the war. The main protagonists on Firefly were veterans of the losing side in a war, so the show lacked a "patriotic military" perspective. Maybe you've got a point and the show would have had more support from network execs if religion and military had played more of a role, but then it would have been a completely different show.

I'd rather have Firefly than Orville. One consideration, though, is that reality show production is relatively cheap. Fox didn't want to have two sci-fi shows on at the same time. Specifically: shows set in outer space with similar settings. Yet back in the 90s my local FOX affiliate was airing Star Trek Deep Space Nine at the same time they were airing Babylon 5 and both shows continued to air until their respective runs completed. Sounds like someone is just giving a lame excuse for not airing more Firefly. FOX executives certainly aren't the brightest stars in the sky. FOX has canceled lots of shows before ever giving them a good chance for people to warm up to them.

The "Space: Above and Beyond" series suffered a similar fate. It was supposed to show Sundays at 7 PM before "The Simpsons". Of course football was always running long. God forbid anything push "Simpsons" off so it got pushed elsewhere. "Elsewhere" was random timeslots at 1 or 2 AM on weekday (Locally) or not at all. Never the same time slot Then they ended the series on a cliffhanger episode. Then cancelled it. Other than "X Files" I refused to watch ANYTHING on Fox after that for years. Especially "The Simpsons". I missed "Firefly" completely over that. Someone told everyone to buy the series online at Walmart when they were blowing it out at a great price though. I bought it. I still avoid Fox mostly. They lost a customer when the blew up "Space" over football and Simpsons. Simple. STOP airing it in football season. Your precious "Simpsons" would of been priority, why destroy a good show by not airing except at random times that ruined any possible audience? Like they set out to destroy it on purpose.

I really think the moment for a reboot is past, sadly (unless they do animated maybe?). The OG cast has aged a lot since then which means a time-skip would need to be explained. That would also mean that a lot of the plot holes would have to be left hanging because you can't expect an audience to believe that certain mysteries or romances would have been left unresolved for 10+ years of this crew flying together. Plus we no longer have Wash and Book who were two of the cast favourites and provided a lot of the comic relief and moral grounding for the crew respectively. A new cast just wouldn't be the same, unless they were able to find another group of people who meshed as well as that particular cast did - and I find it hard to believe they would find it. That cast was lightning in a bottle.

Outside of going the animation route with the original casts voices I think any new live action Firefly show would flounder under the weight of what could have been. They should have sold the rights. I agree. That's exactly what I've been saying to my people for years! Making an animated series with the original cast voice acting seems like the best choice now. They could set it before the movie, so Wash and Book(*cough*) are still alive. Recasting for a reboot seems like a bad idea. And trying to continue with original cast 20 years later is even worse (see: Picard). An animated series would be cheaper to produce and allow so much more creative freedom. A video game adaptation is an intriguing idea...I never really considered that. I like it!

Truth be told Buffy and Firefly had about the same initial season and popularity, the difference being the network. WB gave Buffy a chance and were rewarded while FOX believe in throwing spaghetti against the wall and if it didn't stick trying something different. Buffy's first really good episode was the season 1 finale Prophecy Girl and that set the stage for the classic show that followed so we quite easily could have missed out on BtVS as well.

Had a second thought. Saw the "Magnificent Seven" when I was much younger, a truly great western, with great actors very enjoyable, then some years after that, discovered that the movie was based on "The Seven Samurai" a Japanese classic which in itself, albeit in B&W was again a great movie. The transition of the story from one culture to another with the basic layout and theme the same, did it no harm at all. So it was with "Firefly" endearing, funny, poigniant, adventurous, all of which make for a romping good tale. We need some escapism from this tormented world we live in, it protects our sanity. BRING BACK FiREFLY! PLEEZE! Lets face it we havent had a decent Sci Fi on the TV for years, so lets have it!

I'd love to see more shiny, shiny episodes of the iconic show, ideally with the as much as the original cast as possible (interest may vary, as some have gone on to be pretty successful). I'm sure Mal would be onboard for more, and as the glue which held Serenity together, he'd bring more of the original cast. They'd have to keep the original theme too, it's just so damn good!

Firefly left a deep impression on me and I didn't realize that it showed. At the age of 16 my son who had just gotten his drivers license took me on a ride. He drove directly to the theater where he had purchased tickets for the opening of Serenity. He hadn't watched Firefly, but he remembered as a kid how I looked when my world stopped the moment the show came on.

I, too was late to this show as I was working on my dissertation. Then in 2007, I got cancer and a good friend that owned a video store (anyone remember those) would bring me videos twice a week (her get well gift during my recovery) and Firefly was part of that generous gift. Admittedly, I had a little bit of a hard time understanding the first couple of episodes, but that could have been due to the meds. Then, I sat down one day with a clear head and rewatched the entire series. It was truly FANTASTIC!!! I would watch new episodes even now! Thanks and take care...

You failed to mention all the official comics that have expanded the story a great deal! Other than that... there's so much to confess. A show that defined its decade and influenced shows like Battlestar Galactica. Script was so anti-cliche at the time - in the standard comedic/cynical Whedon way. By today's standards, it may seem as "nothing special", but back then it had balls to go to all directions shows were hesitant to go before - from the "heroes" killing off the "bad" guys when they had the chance to spare them, to showing the characters private lives, even going to toilet, to shaky/handheld camera in space without sound - things that hadn't been done before in space shows. Firefly loosened up the formalities, blurred the lines between good and evil and added the western's rusty and gritty settings. I can only imagine what it could have become under the care of a network like HBO as opposed to Fox, and I can write dozens of pages to eulogize the importance of Firefly, and why it meant so much to me and millions of fans over the past two decades; the characters became our family, and Serenity was our home. See you in the 'verse!

Fillion is still young enough for action, Morena is still gorgeous, and Stait is as well. Tudyk is a workhorse, as is Baldwin. Glau and Maher are still around. I bet Gina would be into it. 300 million? There have to be that many of us willing to pay a dollar, let alone 10 or a hundred to see it happen. They didn't reuse the Starship Trooper armor to simply save money. The network rejected the 2hr pilot titled "Serenity" and demanded that Whedon create a new 1hr pilot episode on short order. So, over a weekend Whedon and Minear wrote "The Train Job" and they shot the new pilot on an accelerated basis. They used the armor from ST because they literally didn't have time to design something new in the time allotted.

@@1JasonBradly While that may often be true. In this case the decision to use the ST armor was made due to the short time frame to write and shoot "The Train Job." Whedon stated his objection to using the armor because he knew everyone would recognize it immediately but he didn't have any other choice. The network literally said, "We're not airing your pilot. Shoot another one and have it to us by Friday or else." As I understand it they wrote the episode over the weekend and shot it the week prior to its Friday airing.

Another great show from that early 2000's era was "Keen Eddie," also aired out of order, poorly scheduled and thrown off the air. I would love to see both it and "Firefly" return...and I don't want them to either. Some shows are not rebootable and need the original cast, and it's been too long now (almost 20 years). Besides, every character on Firefly is key to its working and two of them were killed off in the "Serenity" movie (and one of those actors, Ron Harris, has also since passed away). Nathan Fillion is over 50 years old now, and Adam Baldwin is 60...and that's too old to be playing immature bare knuckle tough guys. And that's the other problem: We expect people to grow up, mature, get their lives together. It's sort of a disappointment if they don't. Would we really tolerate the "should we or shouldn't we" dynamic between Captain Reynolds and Inara? Shouldn't they have figured it out by now? Shouldn't Jayne have wised up just a little bit? And it seems like River would have gotten better and Zoe would have moved on from the tragedy of losing Wash and Simon would have grown more confident. But if everyone has grown up and got a life as we'd hoped...well, there goes the mix of the show. It would be like that all-too-common phenomenon of attending your 20th Class Reunion and after a few hugs and stories, realizing you didn't really have much interest in these people anymore.

I think it sucks that they killed Wash, but I also think that new adventures would be worth exploring. The larger problem is that the Inara story would have to be rushed, or ignored. Recasting is not an option, not for the crew of Serenity. Now, new stories set in the verse with a new crew... I'm open to that. It would be hard to top the original chemistry though. It was so perfectly thought out, the crew and the casting. I don't know if magic like that can be done twice.
