If there's one pop culture moment that nerd culture has yet to forget - or forgive - it was the untimely cancellation of Joss Whedon's cult sci-fi show, "Firefly." Starring Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, and a slew of equally talented actors who would go on to do some huge things in Hollywood, the show boasted a quirky sci-fi Western vibe, a cast of lovable antiheroes, and some of the most memorable dialogue this side of the Earth-That-Was. Thanks to a series of unexpected factors - including an incredibly loud fan base - "Firefly" was given a brief second life on the big screen in the form of a 2005 film. This is the untold truth of "Serenity."

I am actually happy with the way it went, was I sad that Firefly ended? YES. Did I receive more closure with Serenity Movie? YES! Both were absolutely amazing - great writing, great acting and great storylines. It would however be nice to know more on their background stories, their childhood, *Jayne's hat from his mom, it would've been nice to have met her too since I am visualizing an elderly woman in a rocking chair, knitting hats, 😁😊lol

I'm a Browncoat through and through and I love Serenity. Of course I wish Firefly could have run its natural course, but at least Serenity gave us something of an ending. It's like the story ended halfway through the book, rather than halfway through a sentence.

I saw it first and loved it as a standalone movie and then after I discovered firefly I watched as alit was meant to be seen and I got to enjoy it for the first time twice from two very separate mindsets , I love it it's perfect and so is firefly I wish there was a way to have more but it' would be very hard to continue it in a way that maintains it's degree of perfection in writing acting on screen chemistry story mythology like between the two all the major questions anyone has were answered closure was given on pretty much everything you wanted and whedon was so smart for his decision to kill wash because it's impossible to imagine that story continuing in a good way without him I mean any one of the family leaves a massive hole that could never be filled but wash is like the fun parent that makes up for all the bad stuff they get dragged through coupke that with boon and you've lost both of the wayfinders for the family there is no coming back from that it ended on its highest possible note a bittersweet victory for the crew in that they finally show everyone how corrupt and evil the alliance truly is but they had to lose two of the most pure and good parts of themselves to do it.

My only dissatisfaction is that there was a story building about Shepherd Book's mysterious background and how he knew so much about shady things, we never saw that to fruition. The Serenity movie was too rushed and killed off too many main characters, but at least we got closure on the River storyline and the horrible Reevers experiment. We don't need a reboot and it is far too late to pick up where we left off. Thankfully we have streaming to rewatch it for nastaligic reasons. It is the only show that I have watched the first season more than 3 times.

Another great short-lived TV show from the same era as "Firefly" was "Keen Eddie." Wonderful, smart, clever television. I would have loved to have seen both shows run longer. But after 20 years, there is no way I'd want to see either of them try a comeback. The thing about Firefly is it worked because of all nine characters and the situation in which they found themselves. Now two of them are dead (one of them is really dead) and the rest are much older, so that dynamic has been lost. Also, over time we expect and want people to grow and evolve, and not be stuck in some sort of "will they or won't they?" loop for 20 years; nor should people this clever still be barely getting by on the fringe of the 'verse. But if Mal and Inara still aren't on the undetermined edge, and if this band still aren't outlaws, would we like them as much? It's a no-win situation: If they haven't moved on, we won't like it. But if they aren't the same, we won't like it either. And then there is the third element contributing to the no-win scenario: WE have likely changed as well. It's like going to your 20th year high school reunion. After a few minutes of chit-chat, you don't have much patience for someone who still acts like they're 18 years old, and you don't have much in common with those who have grown up and grown apart. Once there was a moment, and it was indeed shiny. But it's over.

Serenity is a fantastic movie that brings a fair amount of closure to the amazing characters from Firefly. But Firefly... Probably the greatest television episodes in human history, horrifyingly thrashed by executives who refused to give it a second thought or even a fair first chance. Serenity is a great movie. I didn't know it was a direct continuation of the short-lived sci-fi western series Firefly. The first episode of Firefly I watched was the finale 'Objects in Space'. In 2006 and again in 2017 I met Jewel Staite (Kaylee) and in 2005, I received in the mail a signed autographed photo from Summer Glau (River Tam). I became a fan of Summer Glau cos of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles which she played Cameron. Summer Glau is a brilliant actress and I love to see her have a guest role in Doctor Who. A shame Serenity didn't do well at the Box Office and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles got cancelled after 2 seasons. They could had launched Summer Glau into Hollywood and to do bigger roles.

I remember my excitement to see Serenity when it was first released in 2005. For me, it was the 1st time I had ever been thrilled for over a year in anticipation. And then I'm sitting in the huge theater on opening day with no more than maybe 25 other folks. All obviously Browncoats from the oft repeated delighted reactions and the movie certainly didn't disappoint, but still... Firefly/Serenity's problem was never the material or the acting but rather connecting with the huge fan base that just never knew what they were missing. And, of course, let's not forget the complete ineptitude of a certain network which shall go nameless.

Mind you, this is an example of his underdeveloped women characters. Aside from that, it can be argued that Buffy is a female version of the hero's journey archetype, but made lacking personality flaws. Going back to Firefly though, the four female characters: Zoe is the Sapphire, Kaylee is the Indian princess, Inara is the spicy Latina, River is born sexy yesterday, a damsel-in-distress, and a magic-pixie-dream-girl, and Saffron is a femme fatale.

Part of the reason _Firefly_ is so good is because the cast and crew knew pretty much from day one that the show was in danger of being cancelled, so they put everything they had into every single episode, because they didn't know if that would be the last one they would ever make. It's hard to think they would have been able to channel that same desperate creative energy if they knew the show's future was assured.

The only thing worse than firefly being cancelled would be a reboot. The cast was the main reason it is one of the greatest shows of all time. The same way Top Gear is Clarkson, Hammond and May not the actual show.

I wouldn't watch a reboot without the original cast. I didn't watch FireFly until it was on DVD because I didn't have a TV. I actually saw Serenity first and loved it then watched Firefly.

I saw Serenity before I watched the series, but I've watched the series maybe four or five times. The movie I've watched at least the same amount of times. It's one of the best series and sci-fi flicks I've ever seen. I'm not a kid either.

I agree with your surmise. I loved every episode of Firefly, and got to see Serenity on the big screen. It was great, man. I was there. It's enough. You can take on the whole thing, like Hitchhiker's guide.

@@markhutton6824 Yes, that's all true. I was just referring to the one book though, because it's short. You can take it in and be hooked, like the one season of Firefly. I've got to get ahold of the text adventure. I was a little young when it came out. I think my cousin had it for his Commodore.

I liked it, and did not think it will survive. I asked my sister, who is in the know, what in the hell was universal thinking, making a movie off of a failed TV series. She said, They wanted to make the maker of Buffy, the vampire slayer happy, and willing to take the loss. They wanted him to come over to their studio to make stuff and hope it's as popular as Buffy. I actually use quotes from the show as my guide in life. If you cant do something smart, do something right.

Serenity made far less at the box office compared to Star Trek Nemesis (which was already considered a bomb), so when Whedon was first announced to direct The Avengers, some were understandably wary. In regards to the Firefly boxed DVD sets, its said that the show’s more... hardened fans bought multiple boxed sets and then tried to convince newcomers to be fans by showing it to them while singing the praises of the show.

as much as I would love to see this rebooted I can't argue with whedon when he said that if he tried to continue it all he would do is convolute his previous work , however I love the way the comics have continued the story and hope that perhaps maybe they'll do an animated spinoff and the move of killing wash is both a tragedy and also just a sort of gift in that it gives solid closure that it will not come back regardless this series has endless rewatch value I fell in love with the movie serenity and had no idea that firefly existed until I was 24 and got my Netflix streaming account since I now own 4 sets of the DVDs 2 blue ray sets and have watched the series and movie no less than 10 times on each of my streaming services , this is one of only a few sci Fi series that stand next to the the original star wars in my heart to this day when shits about to go down I still say 'i am a leaf on the wind , watch me soar " rip wash

The truth is the truth. Part of the reason that everyone wants more Firefly is because there was so little. I like many would have loved if the show had survived or that is what I will always think. At this point I actually don't want the show to come back to TV. If they were to make another movie, and they could bring the entire surviving cast, and Joss was to write and direct that would be fun to look forward to but a reboot on TV I don't want I have 14 episodes I love, and it would be very easy to screw that up at this point. Let's leave it alone and just wish for something that we really may not want and just don't know it.

I have the TV Series and the Serenity movie. If they want to revive the Series or another movie, they can start at the Memorial, go to a scene where Zoe is throwing up, Simon telling Zoe and Mal that she is pregnant, a scene where she is giving birth (It's a Boy, it's a girl, twins!), then fast forward until the Characters are the same age as the actors, plus maybe Simon and Kaylee have kids now too. Allen Tudyk could play Walsh's Brother. Now start the current story!

I think Josh should do another series in the Firefly Universe. Imagine if they came into contact with a highly advanced alien species. First Contact war of sorts. That would force the Alliance and Browncoats to work together. Forcing Mal to inlist with Alliance at an older age could make for an interesting dynamic.

Didn’t have cable back in the early 2000’s . Wasn’t aware there was such a show as Firefly. Rented Serenity at the corner DVD rental on a whim. Was wowed by the film and while watching the DVD extras, found out it was a series. Next day, went out and bought the box set and binge watched.the whole 14 episodes. Fox are morons. They had something great but were too stupid to market it properly.

After all these years a live action probably wouldn't work , but how about a short 6 - 10 episode animated / cartoon show ? You could bring back all living actors with a voice double for Book , or have him off ship like in a few episodes . Maybe touch on some of the Dark Horse comic run or pad out some of the interupted stories from the series , Niska , Saphron , Badger , etc . Lots of potential there .

Even the devil didn't fare so well. Fox cancelled Lucifer after 3 season, and it got 3 more after being picked up by Netflix. It went to the top of Nielson streaming charts. I really think Netflix was a better home for Lucifer, but Fox's executives have been greenlighting and then screwing over good things since the 90's.

I completely missed Firefly when originally released which was a reason it was cancelled it was not well promoted. I accidentally discovered the Firefly reruns on late night TV and was an immediate fan. I was actually dissapointed by the Serenity movie so much wasted potential it could have been wonderful. It had editing and character development problems it could have been a much better movie if handled, written, and edited better!

Rarely has a writer/director taken such a dive in his moral credibility as Joss Whedon. While his star as a human being has faded, that of his work "Firefly" hardly has. The cancellation of "Firefly" is probably the most short-sighted and anti-art decision ever made by a studio. Still, a late sequel would be possible, #Disney!
