Universal might not have had the best success with rebooting its classic monsters in recent years, but go back just a little farther and you’ll find one of the studio’s greatest monster gems: 1999’s “The Mummy.” Starring Brendan Frasier, Rachel Weisz, and many more, “The Mummy” is the perfect blend of humor and horror - and it kicked off a franchise that gave Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson his big screen break.
“The Mummy” is a hugely underrated adventure movie, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. What happened to Imhotep's final plague? Whose idea was that curse? And what's with those Egyptian side-characters? Here are all the questionable things we all just ignore in “The Mummy.”

Imo, I think you've become jaded to take a film from the 90s, about a period of time from the early 1900s and hold it to the same standards of what today's films are. The Mummy was perhaps one of the best Brandon Frasier films I've ever seen. It would be impossible to recreate it and still have the same feel in today's standards. But, that's my opinion.

Thank you! If so, then many European nations can claim horror of African nations, take Italy, Hannibal marched there, raped and pilfered everything, killing all the makes, and making the women pregnant with children from his own line of people, literally changing the genetics of Europe forever. Then Khan , 1/3 of all living people carry his DNA, again stomping the world down so much that the literal footprint of mankind changed due to how many males he killed on his mission across the lands. All people have done horrible things and great things. People hate to see the truth, humanity is capable of and that gies for all of us. It's time to look back and kearn, change to be what we can be for the best, or keep repeating the same things again and again. It's not easy to look and see what our people did and understand that's why we are here, its easier to believe we were all victims of horrors and we were great oeaceful people, which is not true. All humans alive today come from people who were conquered and conquered others, it's sad but true

Also, the fact this was set in the 1930's, it is more representative of that era. Its also loosely based on Howard Carter, a British Archaeologist who is credited with finding Tutankhamun. The 'Mummy's Curse' tends to come from that and if you compare the photographs from that dig, you will see a lot of visual similarities. I do think that its right to portray the 'mindset' of a period of history, even if its not the same mindset we would consider acceptable today. You'd never be able to make Blazing Saddles today....

Absolutely true. What makes me laugh is the people making most noise is white people getting offended because that’s what they think black people should get offended by. It’s the same with the homophobic stuff it’s mainly straight guys getting offended because that’s what they think gay people should get offended by. It reminds me of the scene in little Britain with David Walliams inviting black people over for a party. Lol.

You do know that the Mummy is basically a Noir film, right...? Noir as a setting involves colonialism in places like Egypt & India, as well as most of Asia. For the setting most of the world is as yet unknown and mystical. Bro it's a reimagining of Universal's old monster movies. Basically old The Mummy meets Indiana Jones. Also, the time frame the movie is set in, it was REALLY common for English guys to go to Egypt and explore and excavate ancient Egyptian ruins. The scene with Jonathan Hydes Egyptologist character reading the Egyptian warning on the chest in English to all of his American buddies is probably one of the most spinetingling moments in the entire movie. Correction, John Hannah, who played Evelyn’s brother Jonathan is Scottish not English, & their father was English & they were born & raised in England, hence their accents 🤦‍♀️. What does the prison warden smelling bad have to do with race? Considering his profession, the location, & the time period it’s no surprise he smells bad, & it has nothing to do with race. What “stereotypes” do the “zombie like” followers fall into exactly? Jonathan “Last but not least, my favorite plague, boils and sores.” Ardeth “They have become his slaves.” The curse brought with it the 10 Plagues of Egypt, & that scene pretty well falls in line with that. It’s a good thing you don’t write movie scripts, because adding in the 10th plague would have brought the movie to a ridiculous turn, trying to stop the death of Jonathan, & made the movie drag on.

Egypt was the playground of the Western Powers, especially the British Empire, as it was a holding of the Empire. Rick was an American who fought in the French Foreign Legion, he was also an adventurer, and tbh, in most pulp stories, that's what you see; a group of archeologists being led, or protected by, an ex-soldier turned adventurer. For what this movie was supposed to be, it was a well crafted, well written, pulp story

I love the Mummy. It is one of my favorite, don't really have to think about it movies. I have noticed some of the things that you pointed out. Why Egypt now has such strong laws protecting its "treasures" and how so many throw away characters there are like in Indiana Jones. Looking at it as just mindless fun, it is a wonderful movie that is a much better movie than the Tom Cruise remake.

The reason they cursed him was to punish him for all eternity. The hom Dai was intended to deny him access to the afterlife and trap him on the mortal plane. On top of that he's undead but would feel the pain his body endured even as he was dormant in his sarcophagus. He would be aware of the passage of time. No sleep, no comfort, hunger, pain, darkness, suffocation, loneliness, sorrow, regret... He would experience all of it and never die. And anyone raising him also be punished by him if they ever released him, hence the plagues and sucking them dry to regenerate himself. Curses were some fucked up rituals when think about them in detail. The hom Dai was reserved only for the most evil of blasphemers. Imhotep was a high priest to the old gods and close to the Pharoah. By seducing his mistress and killing the Pharoah he committed the greatest crime possible in Egypt, hence why he was cursed while his priests were merely tortured to death. He was never meant to be released. Of course if the Egyptians wanted to keep him dormant forever they should've destroyed the black book of the dead.

tbh, in retrospective, I thought that Imhotep had actually bad sight since he still referred to Evelyn as Anck-su-namun even if she clearly wasn't the same actress but didn't pointed that out, and this bothered the authors so much that they decided to cast the actual actress to play her love interest in the sequel. This 🤣

Bruh, Imhotep DOES have Burns’ terrible vision. That’s the canonical reason why he thinks Evie is Anakhsunamun, despite it being made clear in the sequel that she was never the actual reincarnation of her.

The Ten Commandments (1956). Cecil B. DeMille overcame a minor heart attack while climbing down by ladder from the top of the Ancient Egyptian city gate set while filming the "take three" of the Exodus sequence. In another incident, during filming of a sand-storm scene, an extra carrying a flaming torch tripped over and the torch set fire to the clothing of a young girl standing next to him. The girl only suffered minor burns thanks to the quick thinking of make-up artist Frank Westmore who raced over and tore off her burning costume. During the filming of the same scene, several Egyptian extras were stung by scorpions, or bitten by cobras, both of which had been blown out of their burrows in the sand by the artificially generated storm. I mean.....

Aside from all the offensensitivity , the Mummy is a fun movie!! I'm sure a better question is the movie ending where Imhotep rides in on a sandstorm with damsel and lackey in tow and Rick and company fly in on a biplane. Now, unless they left some extra camels behind on their last visit to the Mummy's tomb, why were there camels available for the final escape! Oh and while I'm at it , the second Mummy movie has a tense moment with Rick racing against sunrise to save his son! He is racing in the shadow with sunlight speeding up behind him. Okay, tis a fantasy however sunrise would hit the peak of the pyramid first and move down it as the sun rises! Still I love the movies even the 3rd Mummy with Maria Bello had it's moments.

I always find it weird when someone from the present questions why people in the past weren't bothered by people getting killed as much as it bothers people today. They were surrounded around it a whole lot more then we have been in the last 20-30 years. It's not to say everyone was cool with it but if you consistently duelt on it like a lot of people do now it would eat you alive. I don't think the majority of people truly know how sheltered they have been from the horrors the would could offer.

Since the movie is set in 1925 I would say it is surprisingly light on the amount of racism that would have been present. Does it seem bad a full 20 years later? Sure but many things set in a much more modern time that were filmed at the same time have aged less gracefully

Problem #1 with Colonialism This whole thing is settled by a simple statement "Period Piece" because the Mummy takes place in a time and point in history where, lets face it, the English and Americans WERE using it as a playground to explore and experience. Heck, the Egyptians themselves advertised it as such and in some cases even encouraged it. Just wrote a piece on the Titanic, and turns out there was a 'Dragoman' aboard accompanying one of the passengers. He spent his entire life for just such people like the charachters in this film, as it was his way of life. Problem #2 with the Curse COMPLETELY 100% AGREE lol the Ancient Egyptians were stupid, and honestly the Maji guarding the spot shoulda destroyed the key and map when they had a chance. It was the one aspect of the movie I didn't get.... WHY GIVE HIM THE CHANCE TO BE RESURRECTED AT ALL?!?!? and not only resurrected, but also the ability to destroy the world lol Problem #3 'Unfortunate Punchlines' No issues here, ive met a LOT of smelly, sexist, greedy, and undesirable people in my 10+ years working retail... These kinda folks just EXIST, and lets be honest here..... he's the warden of a jail.... in Egypt.... who enjoys watching folks get hanged and even pokes fun at it....he's not gonna be the nicest, charming, and most trustworthy of fellas, i mean c'mon who are we kidding? And his charachter is honestly a good comedic relief for the movie at times. No reason to be offended, it just is what it is. As to the citizens fo Cairo being zombified.... thats just....well....they are zombies that follow Imhoteps command. Stereotypes exist for a reason, because they EXIST and we shouldnt blind ourselves to that. Problem #4 Papayrus: Well, I mean, this IS a legit criticism to the movie, as we see even in Indiana Jones that ancient paper is fragmented and brittle, but by the same token, we know Papayrus CAN survive for thousands of years relatively intact... and the mummy never did address exactly HOW it was stored before O'Connel got his hands on it. Still, I AGREE it is VERY unlikely the paper would have lasted so long. Problem #5 EYES Honestly I never did consider that, since Imhotep has regenerative abilities... I always just assumed that his own ability to regenerate must have corrected the vision somewhat. Woulda been comical to see him crashing around with blurred vision. Problem #6 Imhoteps changed 'Monster' personna: Never did think of it that way, but you're right... he wasn't out to conquor the world in the beginning... he just wanted his dead girlfriend back... creepy and full of bad points....but he wasn't a LITERAL MONSTER like we see later. Chalk that up as ANOTHER reason the Ancient Egyptians are dumb for dabbling in apocolyptic enducing curses lol Problem #7 Death and Destruction, Honestly I don't see this as THAT much of a problem... Benny is just greedy and doesnt seem too remorseful because he's now Imhoteps lackey, and the O'Connel party are basically focused on themselves and their own safety, which is why concern stays 'within the group'. They have interacted with eachother, but they dont really ahve enough time to develop a bond of trust and mutual caring. There is shock & awe when one of the American party dies, but its quickly put aside for the focus to be re-alighned with their own party. They started as competitors in greed... and as we see in the next point.... 'Graverobbers' lol ((Also, again, the Jail Warden.... Rick LITERALLY jumped overboard and left him on a burning ship... Evee was being harassed by him earlier, and Jonathan is just...well... Jonathan....so when he dies I can legit see why they are quick to move on. It's like a "Well okay then, so that was weird, but this is actually better now" kinda deal. Problem #8 Grave robbing: Again, a PERIOD PIECE where this sort of expedition to locate treasure and or ancient relics/artifacts was a very (sadly) NORMAL affair that the Egyptians often went alogn with. The Egyptians now frown on such behaviors but at the time it was not exactly this way... The Museums of the world are FILLED with artifacts and history that we would NEVER have seen, learned about, or experienced specifically because they started off with a discovery made out of greed. NOW....before someone gets on their soap-box.... I do NOT condone grave robbing, and I do expressely believe that nowadays this sort of thing should be done properly and by the proper archeological authorities. However this was 1923, and context is important to remember here.... much of the great Tombs of Egypt were UNEXPLORED, and in some cases there WERE vast cities and civilizations that had yet to be discovered... so the mentality was different back then. "Find it, dig it up, cash in on it, display it" was the general mentality for all of the world back then. Any nation who had proper FUNDING could seemingly enter Egypt and explore for such things... key word is FUNDING... money talks...and HISTORY......'walks' ((see what I did there lol)) Problem #9 "powers of the Mummy' I mean... he's a walking curse....and was buried in the Desert soooo isnt Sand a kinda LOGICAL thing to control? Doesnt he demonstrate the ability to control WATER as well in the Mummy 2 ? So maybe he just has an energy based ability to control the basic elements? Wind, Water, Fire, Earth etc? Controling the wind can account for his ability to scoop up all that sand, as well as some other quirks in his abilities....but i digress.... 'CURSED MUMMY' is explanation enough lol Problem #10 The Final Plague YES, I always wondered about this.... I agree 100% this is a major plothole in the film. I wonder if there is a deleted scene out there that might have the answer? Any movie scholars out there PLEASE fact check this one lol Problem #11 'Horror' I dont see this as a problem? It was meant to be a supernatural thriller... a reboot....reimagining...an homage to the great old classic adventure and horror films of the genre. I think this is a GREAT THING, not a problem? Why is it questionable? I mean CRAP.... those scarabs made my skin crawl when I first saw the movie, expeciially when it got under Jonathans skin UGH!!!!! still makes me cringe.... Yeah i dont get this one.... this was a GOOD element in the movie. The aspect of horror and uneasiness kept it from being TOO campy. ((WOOOOOOW this was a rant LOL)) I shoulda stuck to my initial "This is a period piece, nuff said" comment LOL but i cant help it XD I LOVE THIS MOVIE!
