Lord Jamar: Frank Sinatra is the Only White Artist I Hold in High Esteem

Lord Jamar recently admitted that he didn't realize "Bad and Boujee" was a Migos song until DJ Vlad pointed it out, and the Brand Nubian rapper added that he thinks all new rappers sound alike. He then went on to talk about Donald Glover comparing the Atlanta trio to The Beatles, which opened up a conversation on white artists that Lord Jamar holds in high esteem.
While Lord Jamar admits that he doesn't hold The Beatles in as high esteem as white people, he revealed that he does like Frank Sinatra. To hear more of Lord Jamar's conversation, hit the above clip.

You’re preaching to the choir. I’m Hispanic and I’ll admit that I have a preference for Latin music over any other genre, but if the music is good, I’ll rock with it. Great music is great music regardless of the color of the artist’s skin.

I think Jamar knows his shit and I normally agree with him, but for music, I don't. I think a great artist is a great artist regardless of color. Just because they are from a race or culture that didn't invent that music doesn't mean they can't be good at that style of music. As long as they give credit to the people they got the style from, I have no problem with it.

it's like, he's not gonna even wanna taste food cooked by Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver coz they were cooked by white chefs and he will keep insisting that black chefs and restaurateurs are better always....like the race of the person has to even matter.....people like what they hear and what they taste, that's true in music and food...even in Philippines, people were listening to Earth WInd & Fire and Bee Gees back in the 70's 80's and nobody knew if they was black or white they didnt even know what they looked like back then coz there was no TV and shit, all they hear is great music...idol worship is way different, coz people can and often do worship popular people, but that happens to anyone, even black artists are worshiped just as much, only thing is there are more white people in US than black people that's why the great music artists really do get a huge following especially from the teenagers who are the ones who like to idol-worship, whereas older 20-something people just listen to music and not necessarily worship the celebrity...

@sjim1994
@sjim1994 7 жыл бұрын
girl interrupted In my opinion definitely back then was harder to top the charts, sonically and racially. You needed instruments, people who played those instruments, and most importantly talented people. Things were word of mouth, then eventually it became noticed by someone "higher up", they might've started to perform at fairs and malls, then got a record deal. Places like Motown Records had music industry development schools. You made a record and maybe got featured on the radio...if your song wasn't stolen by some white singer first. So just the process to become a name took time, as opposed to clicking the upload button on Soundcloud. Not to mention segregation was still alive and well in the South. The amount of mass produced, watered down music today that's so easily accessible will quickly reach to the masses within hours. I'm sure if you have tidal or any other streaming service, you get notified when whoever you're following drops a new song or album. Of course overtime 24 hr music 'playing' on the radio became popular, as did various genres and more unconventional acts. Even by the 90s, music still had substance...I guess my opinions also come from my personal taste and quality of music. I can go on and on, these are just my opinion. I wasn't there during those times, but there's clearly a difference; and many can argue just evolution, in the acts of lets say, Nat King Cole and Miguel and how they gained fame and how their content of music affected the masses. Today is V-day and I heard Nat King Cole's Love in Target, I don't know if we'll hear Miguel's Sure Thing playing in stores 50 years from now because new content is put out constantly, allowing us to forget about what song or album was #1 just 2 weeks ago. Sorry this was long. Just some thoughts.
@girlinterrupted9792
@girlinterrupted9792 7 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with everything you wrote. Just wanted to see where your head was at. In this over manufactured society it's a true task to stay 'relevant'. I put that in quotes because the definition changes depending on generation. While it is easier to achieve a number one now, staying relevant truly does take effort.
@sjim1994
@sjim1994 7 жыл бұрын
girl interrupted yes, agreed. Quite frankly, it's very disappointing for genuine fans of music. I'm still listening to Channel Orange hahaha, I personally like when artist take time a year or 2 off from putting out a new project. As long as the project has a timeless feel to it. It bothers me when artist put out shit back to back to back, I question a persons authenticity and artistry. Unfortunately people in our generation are so impressionable, making them impatient and tasteless.

Quincy Jones told a story from the 1960's where Harry Belafonte and Lena Horne had to eat in the kitchen of a Vegas casino they were performing at and had to stay in a black only hotel across town. Quincy said when Frank Sinatra showed up with Count Basie's band, Sinatra said that shit wasn't going to happen. Sinatra had a team of Mafia enforcers assigned to protect each member of Basie's band so they could gamble in the casino unharrassed, instructing the enforcers "If anyone looks at them funny, break both their legs." By today's wuss bag SJW standards, Sinatra would be considered a white racist for his beliefs and things he joked about. But his old school knew how to handle shit that was way out of line.

Lord Jamar is really stubborn with this issue, but no one can doubt that The Beatles copied black artists, especially in the beginning. What is there to be stubborn about it's a fact not just the Beatles but countless white artist stole black peoples sound,style, and even entire songs so I don't get why people get mad when we go for the original and say fuck the imitators oh wait I know why it's because white people get mad no one else would get mad (including black people) if whites were ok with the truth that without us (blacks) they would have little to nothing and that's not only in music but sense whites don't want to acknowledge and expect that they rather just get butt hurt over the truth

He telling the truth all those groups where imitating black artist of the time . I never thought the Beatles where as great as people made them out to be . They where average musicians with a really good songwriter . But they where definitely not tearing the house down like James Brown. Our changing music like Jimi Hendrix . Truth hurts to some people but it is what it is . Man can't be racist for telling the truth .

I love the fact that Jamar has all this insight into what is considered traditionally "White" music. A lot of black people are so much more versatile than you would ever know by seeing them through the lens of the white Media. I think there is also a lot of peer pressure within the community to conform to a certain standard. That's why the most interesting, & endearing people you come across, are the ones who have to balls to truly let thier guard down, show some vulnerability, & simply show the world who they truly are. I also understand that a lot of people grow up in an environment where this luxury is not afforded to them, & could potentially be bad for thier health (the streets for instance).

SAEuropean Patriot what are you talking about? Mozart - the same Beethoven, Bach,Strauss - they are came from Africa. They got typical african names like Johann, Wolfgang and Ludwig, then im surprised that people dont know those facts at all. Lord Jamar talked all that stuff in Vlad interviev about. He knows what he says definietly.

Every artist gets inspiration from those that came before them. It’s impossible not to. So to say they are trying to copy black artists is ridiculous. This guys is just insanely racist. Should we take all the things white people did first and say black people are copying them? For him to sit there and show no respect for some of the greatest artist in the world shows how ignorant and racist he is. And because of people like him the world will never change when it comes to race. Thanks lord jamar for potentially inspiring young adults to be racist and look at skin colors before talent.

All of those English acts from the 50's & 60's WORSHIPED the old blues and Rock n roll artists. Beatles were overrated. LJ always sets the record straight with the whiteboy.
