----------------------
Lord Jamar shared his thoughts on a recent tweet that came from Rakim's page, which stated that we are witnesses the "devolution of rap music," which Jamar said he totally agreed with. The Brand Nubian rapper went on to explain how Rakim changed the game with his style, and how he considers Rakim to be the "God."
During the conversation, Lord Jamar spoke with DJ Vlad about wanting new music from both Rakim and Nas, which you can hear more about above.

People keep using that excuse but forget white kids are still the ones who glorified it and made it famous. Like 50 for example niggas was laughing that he got shot 9 times, but white media used that to push his albums. White folks get off on black violence. Like N.W.A. look at most of their concerts they did, mainly white kids (and groupies). Gangster rap came with conscious rap but by that time white demographics was already running Hip-Hop. Look back at the KRS-ONE and nelly beef. That basically explains what im talking about.

Everyone who approached the mic after him, learned from him. Not being able to respect one of the greatest emcees ever just makes you look stupid and ignorant. Rakim has been rhyming since before I was even born, and I respect him. I don't dismiss him just because he's old. Guess why? Because I can see his rhyme structure, flow, content and delivery is still top notch after so many years of evolution of hip hop. Everyone respects him. It's not even a matter of opinion. AZ had all of those. You’re missing other elements like mass appeal, beat picking, and hit making. Jay Z is Jay Z because he chose the right beats and consistently made the songs that could slap on the radio. Without that he’d just be one of great slept on rappers that never achieved huge success.
@FraileyWhaley
@FraileyWhaley 5 жыл бұрын
@@BijinMCMXC Let's have a discussion. I'm the biggest Jigga fan in the world! But it's not about commercial success. Commercial success doesnt play into your greatness. For you to even mention Az says to me your younger than 40 and a stone cold hip hop fan. What I mean by that is you like New York style rap. Am I right? Scarface is my favorite rapper of all time! THE GREATEST! LET ME SAY IT AGAIN ...... THE GREATEST! But when it comes to Rakim no other rapper in the history of the game has a voice, lyrics and flow. If you believe Az can compare with that man we are wasting our time here.
@BijinMCMXC
@BijinMCMXC 5 жыл бұрын
3rd Gen P Fonk Commercial success does play a role. Jay z had literally all the aspects you can name. The only thing he can’t do is sing and dance, which doesn’t matter. My point with AZ was that you could have it all and still not reach the greatest heights of success that your actual talent demands. He has imo the best rap voice ever, great flow, great lyrics, had radio friendly joints...yet he’s not as well known as Nas or Jay Z. I’m not actually comparing him to Rakim or anybody, I’m speaking in general. And yes I do like NY rap. But I like all styles of rap, though it’s not like back then when you could listen to a rapper and tell what part of the US they were from. Even N.Y. rappers be trying to sound like they from the south or something these days. It’s weird. Anyway, to me, the greatest artists are the ones whose fame transcends them on a wide level. That’s not to say they can’t be great if they don’t, but there’s levels to greatness and your level of greatness depends not just on how talented you are but how much you’re able to achieve and how many people you reach. You can be very talented but not achieve that much or reach that many people. That makes you less great than people who do achieve so much and reach so many people, even if they’re less talented than you tbh.
@FraileyWhaley
@FraileyWhaley 5 жыл бұрын
@@BijinMCMXC you do know you just made the argument for Ice cube being the greatest ever right? But sticking to your points. Jay z doesnt have a good rap voice! Hes my guy but no! Stonewall Jackson Rap predates Hip Hop and I believe it can be documented back to the 1920s. Rap is more like speech, the style of speech incorporating poetry of words. Hip Hop is a genre. I believe Hip Hop is a culture where Rap is the main ingredient.

Stonewall Jackson when I was a child, me and my friends had a rap group. We rapped about the world around us and about what we knew at a tender childish age. Many of my friends from the neighborhood had rap groups or we would just sit around at the playground and would play rap games. But that does not matter. you can perform all the raps songs you have written like many other Rappers out here PERFORMING, but the Essenes of Rap AND Hip Hop comes from within and from within a community that has has an experience so rich that they birth songs and a subculture from their lives that has been turned into a industry. Where does the passion from your rap songs come from? What fuels your written lyrics. What has life and your experiences taught you to make you want to express yourself to the world in such a way that you want to be heard to the point that you think you will make a difference with the words you speak? Or are you just performing and learning what you need to be a rapper or performer. Keep doing what you do. But know that Rap came from pain, love, hopelessness, hope, heart, strength, suicidal ideations, inspiration, and a lived life that reach back far beyond 400 years in America. But today, you have taught me something; anyone can be a rapper.
@tspell4340
@tspell4340 4 жыл бұрын
Stonewall Jackson funny thing is, you keep talking about things you have learned. Did you think Rap just started within the last few decades. Rap has been around and like I said, the first DOCUMENTED existence of Rap was around 1920s. But it’s been around well before then and HiP Hop was birth from that which is more then Rap or music it’s the style of clothes you wear, the dance you Dance, the language you speak, and the way you carry yourself within the world you live. That isHip Hop; it’s your lifestyle. It is a subculture not just the music that comes from it. It’s a whole not parts. Im a RN and I’ve been in the health field for 20 years but Healthcare did not start a few decades ago, this reaches back in the Biblical days and RAP has it origins as well; the horse before the carriage. But you say Tomatoes; I say Tomotoes.

Thuginicant Playa a lot has to do with timing. Hip hop wasn't the main stream phenomena in 88 that it was in 96. And Rakim wasn't the hungry young buck in 96. By then he was the wise elder, and the scene was full of gangsta and gang related rap with very specific polished beats. Had Rakim signed with Bad Boy in 94 and released albums in that era he may very well have been remembered much more fondly because of that era's work, even if it wasn't as good as his earlier stuff.

Kool G Rap was the first gangster rap he single handedly invented that shit at the time they called it “realism rap” as for Rakim the GOD he always kept it real his soul stayed in tact and he chose not to be a part of the fads and fake shit going on in hip hop in the late 90’s also the abundance of hip hop fans in the 90’s was much greater than the 80’s so Rakims true fans of his generation didn’t spawn to the next generation as much. Also new artists like Nas and almost anyone never had a Rakim feature on their albums so his exposure to new listeners vanished. I feel like he didn’t like the politics,fallouts,& greediness in the industry so he chose to stay true to self and sit back and watch this hip hop shit unfold to unfortunately the degressed garbage that plays on the radio to this day. If you really think about it 85% of hip hop artists sold their souls for some made up lifestyle that usually doesn’t last longer than a decade then you’re all washed up

To me, Rakim is the GOAT. I think, if anything, he needed some bangers. Some of his beats were wack. If he could flow over today's beats...unstoppable. He was nice over that boom-bap style back in the day. :-)

His beats were perfect. Today's beats are frequently overproduced. For a lyricist as great as Rakim, you don't want to overshadow his amazing style and brilliant lyrics with overly flashy production.

ah maybe just put 2-3 bangers on a 18 track album then? that wouldv gave him that spot.. but who cares now.. after all those years.. he is recognized by most heads forever.@@jamescarter3196

Rakim could rap over Eric B farting for the beat, and it would be dope. I don't wanna hear anything about Rakim being relegated to boom bap beats. "His flow is submerged in the fountain of youth"

Rakim had a 5 year stretch between 92-97 where he didn't drop an album. That's when producers like Pete, Eric Sermon, Preme, Q-Tip, Dre, Kay Gee (Naughty By Nature) were killing the game. And the next wave of rappers took over. Time passed Rakim at that point.

Thank you. Dudes acting like there was a conspiracy and all this other nonsense. Some dudes just didn't navigate their careers as well as they could of. Taking long breaks between albums (see Special Ed), not having the right singles, etc. Rakim was on major labels and was even signed with Dre for a minute. I worked at Universal when he was at Aftermath.

One of the major reasons why Nas (appears) to get more love than Rakim is because there was a time Nas played to the stereotypes of black street culture. When Illmatic dropped, Nas got love from pure hip-hop heads. But, at that time is wasn’t considered a commercial success. When he dropped ‘It Was Written’, he turned into Nas Escobar. He became a gangster/drug dealer/killer, etc... That album was more commercially successful and his first album to go platinum. Depending on who u ask, some people thought ‘It Was Written’ was better. Major labels will push ignorance over knowledge every time (especially with black entertainment). Rakim always stayed true to himself. When Rakim was on top of the game, being Afro-centric and being proud to be black was accepted by major labels (from a commercial standpoint). When Nas came out, Gangsta Rap was what the major labels were pushing to the masses. That’s why it took Nas so long to drop his 3rd album ‘I Am’. He was getting checked by street dudes and rappers for rapping about a lifestyle he never lived. He had to reevaluate himself and realized he was being used as a pawn to promote ignorance. Since then, Nas has produced music that had more meaning than ‘It Was Written’ (although there were a lot of jewels throughout the gangsta bravado that was projected throughout that album). No matter what, Rakim was always a truth teller from day one. Never changed. He may have suffered from that from a commercial perspective, but true hip-hop heads will ALWAYS appreciate him for staying true to himself.

VAUNCOVERED Couptakeover nas comes from a crime filled environment, and poverty I’m sure his homies were with the shits so idk wtf you mean by “he didn’t live that life”.
@couptakeover
@couptakeover 6 жыл бұрын
What I meant was on Illmatic he was rapping from a third person perspective... he was an observer. Not to say he didn’t get into trouble, sold some drugs, etc... everyone knows he had goons around him (ie. his brother Jungle). But on It Was Written, he rapped in a first person perspective. He acted like he was the biggest drug dealer, he was the one doing the shooting, basically like he ran Queensbridge. He was rapping about a life he didn’t live and got checked by dudes from his hood who really was with the bullshit (ie. Cormega) and by rappers that saw thru his Nas Escobar persona (ie. Jay-Z and Pac). No one said he wasn’t a street dude. But he never was the persona he rapped about on It Was Written. He’ll tell u that himself. During that time he was lost as an artist because he wasn’t being true to himself. If u listen to all of his albums after It Was Written, you can clearly hear the change in his content and how he wanted to represent himself to the world.

Joel Joseph Lol... So all someone has to say is ‘sincerely yours’ and then everything they say is the truth??? Ok, homie... if u say so. As far as jewels in an album, it’s arguable which album has more. But one thing is certain, Illmatic is regarded universally as one of the top 10 hip hop albums of all time. From a hip-hop historical perspective, it’s not even a comparison. But, that’s the beauty of being an individual. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

The Difference between a Nas and Rakim is a Steve Stoute behind Nas Career that he actually listened too, same way Biggie having a puffy helped him go where other Mcs of his caliber couldn't take the game, business was the difference not really skill, even tho Nas took Rakims vibe to a whole other level

It's a time frame thing. For Rakim to be as popular as he is coming from that error in hip hop is amazing in itself. White kids from the suburbs were bumping that "Juice" soundtrack loud as hell. Rappers in the 90's were blessed to be in a time when hip hop pretty much took over though. And I grew up in the 90's and we had an amazing selection. I mean damn we had Biggie and Pac. Wu-tang and Jay-Z. Snoop and Dre. DMX and Em. Nas and Busta! Yo. We were fucking spoiled yo! Lol

Ali Chaudry Well said. It is subjective but nowadays you don't have Freddie Gibbs, Oddisee, Joey Bada$$, and Fashawn aren't being played in clubs. If they we're mainstream then hip hop nowadays would be of a better quality but it sucks that they aren't.

You left out The 18th Letter which was a double CD (album) that went gold (because it was a double CD). I was lucky enough to have an artist that toured in the band with him for this album, including all of the TV appearances. They rehearsed at SIR (which is where I first met Ra). So 5 albums in all, not 4. His single for the movie "Juice" hit Billboard like a bullet.
