My wife and I really enjoy this as a two player game in the evening. We've also taught it many times. We too have found that it is easy to teach. Everyone we've taught it to has really enjoyed it. Now, when we go visit, people ask us to bring Lords of Waterdeep with us.

The best boardgame ever IMO. There is many different paths you can use to win the game, it also very replayable. Definitely is one of the games me and my board game friends play the most and have the most fun with. Lords of Waterdeep is also a fairly easy game to learn, I think I could easily teach anyone how to play this game.

Great review, as always! I do enjoy playing this game, but I agree the game is not very deep. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Terra Mystica one day. Keep up the good work!

Learning it for the first time and visiting a table top game store demo night for the first time I was the eyeshield class peoples and had the hidden objective of commerce and skullduggury, which oddly matched everything I was doing anyways being i didnt know anyone there and yet felt oddly familiar.

actually i recommend the base game only as a tutorial for 2-3 plays.you need that expansion for it.it changes the game wayyy to much.if you want lords of waterdeep with more punch try/buy YEDO its amazing euro/workplacement.

I'm very fond of this game but that said I can see where Joanna is coming from. For a D&D game there's a surprising lack of peril, not personal peril (that would not fit the game) but if the actions of the players somehow endangered Waterdeep that might have made the theme seem a bit more alive.

This is a fun game, but one design flaw I see is that even if you figure out what a player's Lord Card is, there isn't a whole lot you can do about it unless they are the builder. There should be better ways to seriously impede most other players if you can figure out which lord they are, so that they would be motivated to perform a larger variety of quests to try to obfuscate that. There is even an Intrigue Card that allows a player to be immune from Mandatory Quests for the rest of the game if they reveal their Lord Card to the table. It is way overpowered because of this flaw.

How come you did go over Skulls of Skullport into more depth?

OpenWorldAddict Agreed. The expansion adds a ton to the game. The mountain expansion adds tons to the intrigue cards in terms of getting and playing and the skullport expansion adds a lot to the strategy one might take with the corruption. To me the the expansions took the game from a pretty good game to on the verge of being great.

OpenWorldAddict our reviews are geared towards dealing with one game / expansion at a time to keep the reviews 'short'. As such, adding expansions to the reviews actually contradicts the point / goal of each review. Occasionally, on request we do reviews of expansions by themselves, but the expansions are generally not 'rolled into' any single review.
