I was a freshman at NC State in 1983. Now on the 40th anniversary, I still remember every detail and game of that season - was the ONLY time I ever failed a class because we partied in the court yard after EVERY game, which went into overtime. Hence the term, Cardiac Pack!!! Hail NC State.

I know the feeling well. I watched the 1982 NCAA Championship in Chapel Hill with friends. The guy throwing the party lived in an apartment building inhabited mostly by students, so practically every unit was blasting the game. When Patrick Ewing hit James Worthy right on the numbers, the whole place vibrated from the collective roar. When Worthy (recovering from his shock) slung that pass at Michael Jordan the edifice *rocked* with the screams, floor-beating, etc. So, yeah. The Other Team down the road. Ours was expected to be a tight game, but yours just... wasn't, so I gotta admit y'all's victory must've been a smidge sweeter!

@@srfgrn Yeah -- 1980. The year two (count 'em -- two) Yankees were named coaches of North Carolina ACC powerhouse teams. Polish and Italian? Not a really big deal. The Piedmont is more diverse than people think. Catholic? Not a big deal either, except for some hardline Methodist Duke alumni. But *Yankees* coaching *our* teams? It was hilarious! I know you remember it. Jimmy V kinda let us down a bit, but Coach K vies with Dean Smith for the All-Around Good Guy Award. Both total class acts. Yeah -- never say Tarheel fans hate everything about Duke on principle. Ya Dookie.

I say "let me tell you something, junior, if you are playing against a top defensive team, you try to keep possession of the rock with athletes swarming around you. It takes fortitude and court vision to execute it. These instant gratification diseased generations are irritating. Gmae doesnt revolve around you and your schedule. Ahead of the game, NC State was talking of a controlled, slow tempo game, as they knew they weren't capable of running end to end with Houston. And at the tip of the ball, they played full court full speed. Houston had bought the pre-game fake out, and didn't expect State to come out running.

It all started with the Round 1 game against Pepperdine, a game State had no business winning, as they were down six with a minute to play. (I came home late from a party and started watching in the last few minutes of regulation) Remember, no shot clock and no 3-point shot back then. Incredibly, with good defense, timely fouling and Pepperdine missing free throws (a foreshadowing to this game), they tied the game and took it to double overtime and won it. As big as that was, the wins over UVA and Ralph Sampson, first in the ACC Tournament Finals which put them in the NCAA's and then upsetting them again in West Regional final may have been the biggest win, as UVA was expected to be a Final Four team.

@@Suarez05 I disagree...that wasn't a massive upset, like NC State vs Houston. And that football game also wasn't for the national championship. And the way NC State won the title...every game was a nail biter. That will never be duplicated.

I think Olajuwon was the first player in college to win the national championship MVP Award, despite playing for the losing team.

Olajuwon--STAY CLOSER TO THE BASKET!!!!! Clyde was directing to him to just that but #34 left his post when he thought Benny Anders had stolen the ball from Whittenburg.

They got lucky, they’re just passing around and not even looking at the basket till time was almost out.

From this to the bills comeback and oilers leaving town, the Astros cheating scandal, to the Rockets winning their championships when Jordan was playing baseball, Houston is a spooky sports city.

Honestly why did they team draw up such a horrible play? if they only needed 2 points to win it. Just a horrible play on both teams.
