So, I'm gonna firearms nerd out here a wee bit. That SMG Lily was using (Calico M955A) fires the 9x19 parabellum round. NIJ Level 2 body armor can easily stop this round and is basically just a kevlar shirt. It'll hurt when you get hit (Especially multiple times) but Data is an android so I doubt that'll matter too much. The only possible issue is that we've never really seen protective gear in Star Trek except for the Star Fleet guards from the TOS films. Beta canon thing about Picard not telling the computer where he wants the clothes, according to the Galaxy Class Technical Manual, the computer is almost constantly recording, interpeteting, contextualizing in order to know how to understand commands, I contend that the Sovereign class's computer worked in the same way, it heard Picard ask to be met in Transporter Room 3, contextualized that with the request for clothes, and replicated the clothes in Transporter room 3.
@DrewLSsix
@DrewLSsix 4 жыл бұрын
Its about the only way we can assume computers would work in the future. If they can't function at the human level we can't realistically use them as seen in this franchise. There are many other things that support this, the doors always know when you are intending to leave vs when you are just walking by, so it's not just a simple sensor at work theres some significant logic at work. They, or rather the computer seems able to accurately infer your intentions and take action unbidden to accommodate you. I like to think something similar is at work with the LCARS panels, touch screens are notoriously dodgy today for several reasons and you would not want to rely on them to steer your multi million ton starship, but if the computer has been highly developed to perfectly interpret your intentions they may well become a reliable interface. A plausible reason for mechanical switches still being in use for a long time, especially when your crew may include non humans with manipulators that dont reliably work with touch screens.

the bridge officers were headed to Transporter Room 3 but remember all of the away team members had to change into the clothing before beaming down. I find it unlikely that they all stripped down together in the transporter room, and equally unlikely they met in the transporter room to get their clothes, then went to their own quarters to change, then came back to the transporter room. Which leads me to believe there is likely a changing room adjacent to the transporter room, which would be the obvious place for the computer to replicate away team clothing. It would make sense to have such a room suitable for changing, decon, or quarantine, similar to the one adjacent to the shuttlebay on the NX-01

I think the temperature is a continuation of the “sickness” motif. The enterprise is “infected” with Borg and the initial “symptoms” are a temperature. It then spikes with the assimilation of the first two crewmen which grabs Picard’s attention. Thinking about it given the tradition of the Captain idolizing his ship, I’d say that whole scene is showing Picard choosing the Enterprise over the Phoenix and taking Data along with him.
@kyle1078
@kyle1078 4 жыл бұрын
I agree, the temperature was less intended to be a scientific universe thing but a metaphorical one. There are a number of justifications you can make for why the Borg took that system first, but overall the goal was to show that the ship was "sick" and was running a temperature. I don't know which came first, but I notice that all of the people in the scenes on the ship are extra shiny, which would be due to them sweating from the temperature.
@BNuts

As was shown in, I think, 'Relics,' (the episode with Scotty) Picard's ship was, and will always be, _USS Stargazer_ . Not that he didn't like the _Enterprise_ . Either of the ones he commanded. I like the imagery of spreading assimilation that we find in _Star Trek Online_ , where you can see the metallic hues and green spreading into whatever is being assimilated at the moment, whether a person, a ship, or a planet. And when the Borg could assimilate on a planetary scale, it was something that really freaked me out. Thankfully they lacked that technology for this movie.
@brokeneyes6615
@brokeneyes6615 4 жыл бұрын
BNuts in Generations Kirk tells Picard never to let them take the enterprise from him, that said thinking about the movies themes of the story (and the next scene) it’s probably more like Picard “ “senses” the infection and, again keeping with the sickness idea is moving like an antibody towards an infection ge needs to wipe out.

Well, the guy Sisko was "playing" died in real history at the event, so it was easy enough for him to just disappear afterwards. Cochrane didn't just fly the Phoenix and invent warp drive, he also made First Contact and became a leader of Earth into the early years of the Federation, then ventured into space on his lonesome until he was abducted and taken onto a planet where a lonely alien entity kept him alive until the time of Kirk and beyond- in fact, the real Cochrane might well STILL be alive in the time of TNG for all we know. So....whoever is replacing Cochrane, basically has to sacrifice their entire for centuries to come.

Another two bits of foreshadowing which can be seen in these scenes is the small triangle logo that looks a little bit like a bio-hazard one on the green tanks with the liquid that eats flesh and gets broken by Data at the end. The second bit of foreshadowing is during the conversation between Picard and Data, the moment Picard explains to him the importance of touch for humans, to be more precise. Later, we can see the Borg queen grafting a piece of real human skin instead of his artifical one, so he can feel things, as in finally have the ability to touch and feel things like Picard earlier.(which he couldn't understand the importance of precisely because of his inability beforehand)

The heat may not have been from altering the environmental control systems, but from the Borg setting up their systems, which produce a lot of heat in running. In one of the early scripts, Picard was going to take the place of Cochrane, like Sisko with Gabriel Bell.
@tba113
@tba113 4 жыл бұрын
RE: the environmental systems screwing up - it probably wasn't the Borg's intention to mess with the thermostat, but simply a side effect of them breaking into the _Enterprise's_ systems. It may not have occurred to them that the crew would notice something like that, since the Borg don't exactly care much about crew accommodations on their own ships. They might figure that temperatures between "brisk fall day" and "warm beach" to be well within acceptable tolerances for humans with no environmental gear beyond a uniform, so going from air-conditioned office temps to a balmy summer evening should be too trivial a change to mention. I mean, the Borg are basically the species equivalent of a sociopath. If they don't care about something, it wouldn't occur to them that anyone else might either, unless it's specifically pointed out.
@jrus690
@jrus690 2 жыл бұрын
Except in reality, the Borg would never make changes to the environmental controls, given that they are a collective and had already assimilated humans before, they would know not to change them. But RLM is correct about this movie, it had a shitty script, from the time travel plot to the shooting up of the base, to the assimilation of the ship, none of it make much sense. Jean Luc suffering supposed PTSD, even when he had no real trouble before, should have been at the battle, and regardless should have been able to send the coordinates for where to fire the weapons. Nonetheless this is required viewing because it ties into Best of Both Worlds, it has the movie budget for elaborate Borg scenes that put it on another level from the TV show. The shortcoming of the movie was that the queen shows up, so they had to bring her into every plot afterwards for continuity. The writers have always been the shortcoming of these shows, all the species represent different societies in our current world, so of course aliens have to be 'not that bright'. The Klingons were meant to be the Soviet Union, even though the Soviets were never like that.

Someone else may have mentioned this, but I think the increase in temperature in and around Engineering is a consequence of the Borg setting up, not part of an actual plan. Remember, in the Enterprise episode 'Regeneration' the partly-assimilated aliens inject nanoprobes into a section of the Enterprise computer and we see it grows a Borg console. Presumably they're doing something similar here, and as the systems near Engineering become more Borg, they automatically start pushing the surrounding environment towards what is normal for inside a Borg ship. The Borg either can't stop that happening or they don't see it as a problem because it's normal procedure.

As already mentioned, the weapon in use is of a caliber readily stopped by simple kevlar weave. Arrows and bullets do damage differently, bullets deform and are ultimately just small blunt objects moving very fast, while arrows are sharp piercing objects with a lot more mass behind them. Kevlar weave will fail against an arrow or knife. Data's substrate could easily be resistant to one and not the other. Also, star charts are a critical component of navigation and astrogation, and don't need anything more active than a regular camera since it's all comparison to reference charts. Anyone with a reason to have a keen eye for the stars should be able to tell you roughly what time of night it is, or rough latitude. When you can take a picture and compare it to old pictures (or do math to project where stuff was supposed to be) it's not much of a stretch to do. Hell, they brought celestial navigation back to the syllabus at Annapolis.

Honestly, the entire Borg "war" makes no sense at all, and any attempt to reconcile all of the inconsistencies are just an act of religious faith. You have the Borg who are a large power where one cube is a match for many Federation ships. Then you learn that they have a transwarp drive where they can pop around the galaxy at will. Then you learn the Borg have tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of these cubes. --- So, in the initial conflict, the Borg send a cube which almost succeeds in its mission. So what do the Borg do? The logical thing, right? They send in 5-10 cubes to wipe out the very weakened Federation and assimilate everyone and their technology. Nope, they don't do that... instead they have a convoluted plot to go back in time to either just absorb humanity or stop them from becoming warp capable. ---- Why do this? Without developing their technology, the Borg wouldn't even bother assimilating humans who are biologically inferior to many other species out there. Instead of gaining the Federation, they would have simply removed us from the space faring 24th century, gaining nothing. Yet, in the movie this is exactly what happens...
@edwinball985
@edwinball985 4 жыл бұрын
Also, I've never been clear if the going back in time is the primary goal with the main attack as a ruse or is it a backup plan? If it's a backup plan, why? You've got the power to go back in time why not use it without losing a cube if the goal is efficiency in assimilating the human race. If the main attack is actually a ruse, it seems badly executed. The sphere doesn't leave until the cube is almost destroyed. If timing was off by a few seconds, the whole plot fails. Military strategy, and common sense indicates that if you have a sneaky backdoor way to take the objective and you want to cover it with a showy frontal assault, you set up your sneak attack as far away as possible from the main force. It would have at least made sense for the sphere to separate soon after the Borg entered federation space then proceed with it's mission while the cube engaged the fleet.

It takes fairly high levels of phasers fire to disable Data and lore, knowing how strong and fast Data is you're going to need a very sturdy frame to withstand that, he's proven to be stronger faster and more sturdy than a borg, the arrow may have damaged something but I don't think it would really be permanent damage or a part of his body that he really needs that much since he operates just fine and doesn't appear to need it much, according to some dialogue even spoken by Data his endoskeleton skull and spinal struts are made of a similar or the same material that starship plating are made of and other sorts of strong materials, Starfleet ships were shown with standing atomic bomb levels of force or more than that from Phasers and torpedoes, so Data is pretty sturdy even if a guy could shove a spike through his chest, perhaps his frame was weakened in the crash or maybe that guy was really strong one of the two!?

I've never had an issue with the engineering scenes. I always assumed the Borg were trying to attract as many personnel as possible to build up enough force to take Engineering quickly and without alerting the rest of the ship as they will still be extremely vulnerable until they've established a Hive and created enough drones to adapt to Star Fleet phasers and not totally deplete their numbers, so messing with systems buried in the bowels made tactical sense to me. The temperature eventually hits 39.1 degrees C, which is HOT, as in above internal body temperature hot. Even if it's not at that point yet, it'll be getting there so I can imagine that discomfort coupled with the frustration at not being able to fix what was probably assumed to be a minor issue, given La Forge's nonchalant order made Porter rather gung-ho about jumping into a Jeffries Tube. My interpretation (Although never actually shown by dialogue or visuals so could be taken as speculation) is that while the camera is set back to zoom in for that 'gotcha' moment, the Borg or assimilated colleague may well have been a lot closer so the woman may not have had time to react. As for why she isn't armed or calling security; my interpretation is that Porter hasn't been heard from for an extended period, so it the female engineer is concerned he's fallen or is otherwise injured; these things happen and isn't necessarily a job for security and calling medical will need more information than just "he's gone quiet and I don't know where he is right now". They are engineers, safely working in engineering so not carrying phasers is perfectly logical. It would have been weird to me if they had been armed. Of course I recognise some of this is my leaps of faith/suspension of disbelief. Ultimately, I LOVE First Contact and is my favourite Star Trek film above all others and no amount of bashing or nit-picking can change my ongoing enjoyment of it.

Which would make sense if he just hadn't been heard from him in a while. But the way the scene looks, he screams right after we hear him talking to her. So either he actually goes much further after that part of the scene than it looks like, or she should have heard the scream. Which you'd think combined with seeing someone in area he didn't expect too right before would raise some red flags in her mind.

Fair point, but even then I can imagine the first thought is he had fallen or injured himself, so going and investigating is not outside of believability for me. Don't get me wrong, I recognise the film is full of inconsistencies and plot holes, we're talking Berman-era Trek after all so I do realise I'm trying to paper cracks. 😁

Would you be interested in doing a video speculating on the actual number of casualties suffered on the Enterprise-E during First Contact? There’s a LOT that’s open to question from whether or not the Borg assimilated everyone on the decks below main engineering to how many people could have been saved - as in the recently assimilated and nanoprobed-but-not-assimilated-yet crewmen - after the Queen’s (gruesome), ah, “liquidation” caused the mini-Collective to fall apart. I mean, every escape pod was launched, but how many of the 1000+ crewmen on board actually got to go home at the end of the movie?

So here's another thing. If the middles fuel wasn't exchanged for less violent fuels having lily fire off a high cap mag of rounds would have possibly killed the whole room. A compound Hydrazine fuel with N4O2 fuel. Both under high pressure and the tanks and skin of the missile are THIN. A hammer could puncture a tank or, as what happened in Arkansas in the late 70's a huge honking wrench socket. Big enough to put a soft ball into the hole. One slipped during routine maintenance, fell down and on the bounce up richocheted into the missile as it started spewing hundreds of gallons of hydrazine compound that filled the silo and after attempts to rectify the situation the fuel combusted. Basically if chochran couldn't modify the titan 2 to use the same fuel as the sr71 bird with jp7 or cheaper iteration... lily just killed everyone in the silo.

That would be too advanced for the rest of TNG, but I think something similar was shown in holodecks in Voyager. Voyager was taken to the Delta Quadrant in 2371, and the First Contact Borg attack takes place in 2373, meaning they could justifiably have the same level of tech.

First things first, the security team [No Warf? Really?] is in the back, that's a No-No. The security team always enters first. Edited to fix some of my egregious spelling and grammar errors. Triganomitry. Three known points and some very accurate latitude and longitude from the computer with some quick math from data, or the computer will put you very close. This is something we teach soldiers very early in their careers in the military now, well at least 15 years ago. Its simple math and the more exact the known locations the more exact your final point will be. Example for this case: 1. long/lad for known object one, two, three, hell maybe 40, the ships computer and data are pretty powerful calculators 2. The respected angles of each object toward your point of interest, really you do not need the angles. 3. The simple way where the lines intersect is the point of interest. Or the hard way, with the law of cosines, this one isn't taught to soldiers generally, but people who teach their 2 nd graders calculus would have taught them this by kindergarten. Basic use in this case, you're looking for the distance from the objects to the point of interest knowing only the angle and both distances 'X' & 'Y' from the point, your 'rise over run.' You'd then plug that info into the formula C^2=A^2+B^2-(2AB(COS(♧))) where ♧ is the angle to the point of interest from north. The the sqrt(C^2) will give you the distance to the point of interest. Two or three of those will give you a very good idea of what's happening. With 7 and the right significant digits will put you as close as GPS. Cross reference that with historical data base and you know that there is a missile base in the area. I love you channel keep it up. -JAG

I don't care that Picard didn't tell the computer _where_ to send the clothes. That's the least of his omissions. How about, clothing for how many people? What are their sizes? How many men, how many women? What part of Earth? (Actually he doesn't even say Earth at all; since much of the Federation seems to have adopted the calendar by which this is known as the "mid twenty-first century," he might conceivably have been asking for a Tellarite outfit.) What season? What's the weather like? What level of formality do you want? The outfit you'd wear to a beach volleyball game would not blend in at a presidential inauguration, or vice versa; but both could equally be described as civilian clothing. And I don't really care about any of that, either. I know you can't spare more than an offhand line without breaking up the pace of the movie. But maybe Picard could have delivered that line to an extra instead; tell a junior bridge officer to have the replicator get clothes ready. This junior officer would be able to fill in the answers to all of those questions on his or her own.

My theory why the Borg steel changed the temperature... Native Borg can survive in space yes what about recently a simulated people maybe a simulation technology needs a particular temperature and humidity so that new grafted Borg parts do not fail instantly and have time to adapt to the new body nanobots can only do so much probably and they do take time to develop and reproduce anything that reproduces needs a good temperature
