I quite like the Borg Queen, but I do have my head canon about her. That she was created as an adaptation to better understand and defeat the federation. It's like an evolution of Locutus. A singular being to focus the hive mind on a single task.

this is actually pretty cool. they didn't intend for it to match the actual real world theory of post scarcity, but it does (though it is done poorly and the rest is shit). you see when you reach post scarcity it is because the resources vastly outstrip the needs. the problem is that people adjust. think about it like someone figured out how to make terabyte drives in the 80's when a program was a few kilobytes. at first it would seem like there was infinite space, but then once they got used to it and relaxed their standards for space efficiency (which already happens), and they advanced enough to use the resources like we do today. the entire economy shifts as well, so that things that once where cheap are now expensive and things that were expensive are now cheap. stuff that can't be replicated or programmed, such as social interaction becomes much more valuable while at the same time things like gold become dirt cheap. imagine having to pay to ask a girl out, only to have her shoot you down like now without payment. of course you get the best of everything and want for nothing. once things settle out you end up with those that lack resources because it is used up in other areas, resulting in poverty just like today.

Suggestion about the tricorders: They were linked to the engineering, and they were trying to use them not for Data, but to attempt to break the lockout.
@Headhunter1234256
@Headhunter1234256 4 жыл бұрын
I think the use of a tricorder is because it's supposed to connected to the computer core. Maybe that provided some advantage we don't know about that borg tech would not. Probably looking too much into this.
@Logarithm906
@Logarithm906 4 жыл бұрын
That's my guess too. Immediately after Data "locked out" the computer someone gave a report, from a terminal on the bridge, about where the borg were. Meaning that the lockout was selective. If the tricorders were still "talking" to the computer and after all why wouldn't they transmit harmless stuff, like the current climate. You could look for changes in the computer or what the computer transmits back. Because you control the information being transmitted (the climate) you massively increase your chances of knowing how to decrypt what the computer is sending for information you don't control. It's pretty much how the Enigma was broken in real life. Once it was known that the Germans always transmitted weather around a particular part of their transmissions, the rest of the decryption just became a (very hard) maths problem.

I feel like it's a specific choice to show Cochran the Enterprise. The crew think they know he would love to get up onto their ship, and showing it to him, and his impact on the future of space flight, is the motivation they think he needs (their assumptions being he was drunk cause the Phoenix is "dead", not realizing his default state is "modestly lushed". As for the phasers doing damage again, we see the crewman working the buttons on top before he is grabbed by the Borg. I think this is supposed to be establishing security manually remodulating their Phasers. The auto-remodulater failed because the Borg began predicting the pattern, presumably, so changing over to an unsuspected frequency would allow 1 or 2 shots through before they adepted. The overall adaptation time is minimal compared to the remodulation effort (as we saw) and the loss of drones is made up for ten-fold as the crew is captured, so it makes sense the Borg would not see it as an issue to address. Trying to keep shields adapted to all phase variations is probably more energy and process consuming than it needs to be, compared to inflicted damage, so just applying shields to known frequencies and re-upping as new ones come in makes sense at a resource management level.

@@Mathadar I seem to remember that Cromwell was their second choice. Tom Hanks loves Star Trek and badly wanted to be in it, especially playing a character so central to the mythos; but they just couldn't make it work with his schedule. I've often wondered how that would have gone. I think they'd have needed to write Cochrane a little differently, make him a bit more clean cut. Which would have been more in keeping with his other appearance in TOS.

The Borg were likely using the tricoders as part of their code breaking efforts rather than as sensors. If the the tricorders were continuing to interact with the ship's computer (and judging from the reports given by the bridge immediately after Data locked them out, there's still a LOT of stuff going into and out of the computer), then they're a potential weak spot in the computer's security. They likely aren't using them for scanning purposes but instead feeding information into them in the hopes that the tricorder would upload it to the computer and get a response. Think of it like them telling the tricorder to send something unimportant like the current air temperature (harmless enough right?) to the computer and then seeing what is actually sent to the computer from the tricorder as well as confirmation packets from the compture (the German engima was broken precisely because they always transmitted "weather", once you know part of what's being sent or received it makes breaking an encryption much easier). Georgies cybernetic eyes and tricorder aren't really proof of futureness. I mean I have a phone right now that can do half the functions of a tricorder, a flip phone doing it certainly wouldn't impress me and georgie could just just have naturally good eyesight and some fancy contact lenses, certainly not proof of aliens... However, A massive spacecraft in orbit though, that's a level of commitment to a prank that just isn't believable, especially as something that bright would also be visible to the naked eye too (in much less detail obviously) meaning even if I didn't trust what my own telescope was seeing, i'd at least know it was seeing something up there that wasn't easily explainable. New Zealand: They must've rebuilt it, because i'm sure Janeway picked up Tom Paris from a penal colony on New Zealand...

They're basing the Borg Queen off of Bees and how they have one Queen to keep the focused and in line. So she does make sense. And after the Borg talk in unison all throughout Star Trek, hearing this soothing singular voice is actually more terrifying. I loved the Borg Queen and liked her the best in this movie. The others were not as interesting but served their purpose.

I actually love that we meet Cochrane, and he’s nothing like the historical figure people think they know. We should take a lesson from this, after all, how many times of late have we heard the phrase “Gene’s vision”? While he was quoted as having said many great things, he was also said to have been a womaniser, and certainly was a capitalist. By the way, I do think Trek is something special to be treasured. I love that it brings out the best in many, and some of the lessons learned in episodes can be inspiring, if that’s the correct word. I’m also aware Roddenberry made a great show to earn money, not to “give something back.”

I think it's a more "realistic" take on the Trek universe, but also hearkens back to the TNG attitude towards the 20th century in Seasons 1 & 2. I also guess they didn't have "tell all" books about popular historical figures in the TOS/TNG timeframe - ENT make a point a couple of times to (gently) talk smack about Cochrane.

as for the tricorder, i figured it was them checking the deviations between their own sensors and the tricorder. in order to try and correct for the imperfections of the primitive technology. i think of it like a technician who has never used an analog multi-meter having to figure out how to reverse engineer a device made using a that same type of analog multi-meter. there are some tricks one who is good with an analog multi-meter that you can't do with the more advanced digital ones, but the digital ones tend to be more accurate and easier to read.

Call me crazy I don’t mind the queen. Maybe the borg assimilating so many humans changed them into craving some type of individuality. They did turn Picard into locutus. Maybe the borg realized that semi individualistic leaders ruling over many borg drones is a better system or its a flaw that was adopted by assimilating so many federation members. Remember Picard said “my culture is based on individual liberty” what kind of change to the collective would happen if that ideal started to take root in the collective?

On the episode where Worf's son, Alex, comes on they are using a new FTL technology. Geordi mentions to Data and Worf - who don't really care - about being there the first time it is used. He likens it to be with Yeager as he breaks the sound barrier or Cochrane when he breaks the light barrier. Little did he know he would be there when Cochrane when he breaks the light barrier. Unrelated to this but on that episode, luckily Alex does disobey his father, Worf, to rescues the endangered animals when that area is damaged with radiation to save them. Did you see that video about all Earth maps being wrong? He shows a map of the Earth where we don't notice NZ is even missing until he tells us. New Zealand, the forgotten islands.

The reason why the Borg using tricorders is consistent with their other behavior is sufficiency. They only sent on cube on this mission because one was sufficient. They did just enough to destroy the camp rather than destroy Montana, because it was sufficient. They go to deck 11 and stop because it's sufficient. So, maybe they're just not spending energy building a better borg scanner (whether the form of that scanner is a cybernetic appendage), because the working tricorder is good enough to tell them what they want to know.

Thinking back to Stargate SG-1 and why the Asgard recruited SG-1 to help with the replicator threat, someone on board should have thought to go to the Captain's Yacht, severed the computer linkup to the Enterprise, and started replicating some 21st century military tech. I'm pretty sure the strategic use of M67 fragmentation grenades, shotguns, smoke bombs, C-4 charges, and 40mm grenade launchers with sticky grenades could have been useful. Imagine at 14:36 being part of the security team seeing all those Borg advancing on you. A smoke grenade is tossed in along followed by a couple fragmentation grenades before the security team backs out and the doors close, then BOOM.

I always thought of the Borg as the remnants of an ancient weapon designed for an ancient war. What better way to defeat an enemy than to turn his own forces against him? The Queen is either Weapon zero, or the embodiment of a computer program that began it all. You would want a central figure or hub at the center of the Collective. To quite literally bring "order to chaos". Billions of drones just chatting back and forth would be insanely chaotic. The queen is the order to the chaos...

The only thing I would about the Chochrane scene with the telescope; I can only think the Chochrane would assume all the equipment is either fake or just classified military kit, the missile complex seems to have no military presence after all. In that scenario what is more likely; their story being true or them being some sort of high-tech military spies are special forces? But them being able to find the Enterprise with his own telescope, something he knows intimately and understands probably would cause him to start to change his opinion.

3:38 - 4:24 kinda repeating there. 16:10 - as a Kiwi, it bugs me that NZ is missing. Especially since it's referenced many times in the shows. 16:36 - even when I saw this in the cinema I noticed that when Lily presses the phaser into Picard's hand, it fires. (red light gets switched on). He dead. He dust.

I prefer to think that the Borg are constantly in a state of change from assimilating new cultures. The Queen didn't exist before, but now does and the Borg retroactively adjust their memories, even in Picard's.

rather than introducing the Borg Queen, they could have introduced a secondary main antagonist that's separate from the Borg, that provided the time-travel tech and was using them for their own insidious agenda the Borg and this new (or old) enemy have some sort of understanding that for now prevents from turning on each other, though at some point they, intend to double-cross each other, either way, the Enterprise must defeat both threats or lose everything

Oh, off of it they needed to use a method that he was familiar with that he can verify they literally have a line it's your telescope since he examines that he knows it hasn't been tampered with the reckley and he's familiar with how he uses in Winters images. Anything else could be a gimmick. This will be something familiar in a tune with stuff that he knows giving him results that he could process during bet that he can rely on. Incidentally this is probably why the Borg are using the tricorders. They want to have more adeptly interface with the nuances of federation technology. It makes perfect sense to use what's available in a way that interfaces with the technology that they are still integrating and understanding without necessarily erasing it. Also the Borg doing something that isn't super duper efficient but being assigned one task and not sparing any creativity aside from what they already make themselves ready for it's pretty classic Borg

The movie lost me when First Contact involved Zephram Cochrane of Alpha Centauri doing his Warp Experiment of Earth. Wait, if there is no New Zealand, then where was Tom Paris when Janeway recruited him? Also Picard tells Lily the ship has 24 decks. Then Hawke reports the Borg hold Deck 11 to 26. Despite all the attempts to reconcile this in universe, I suspect that Hawke's line came from a script that was written before the E was designed, and since the D had 42 decks (more than twice that of the A), it was assumed the new model would be at least as big as the old one. While Picard's line was written/rewritten after the final model was decided on.

i always just assumed that the federation put in place methods to prevent borg tech from interfacing with federation technology or at least the computer directly and that's why they were using tricorders. it would have been nice if that had been the case but later in voyager that gets thrown out the window. As to your disbelief about zephram not convinced by geordi's eyes. we do have weird contacts made specifically for cosplay and just to look like cats and such wouldn't be a stretch for that to be the case in star trek universe and for zephram to know about them. plus i'm sure they don't want him examining the tech from the tricorder. i remember an episode where they had a time traveler come from the past come and steal stuff from the future just so he could claim he invented it. so you know maybe they were actually employing some canon in the movie and showing tech that doesn't seem physically possible could have unforseen change's who else might see it and what would they do to have such tech.

When you here borg queen it removes the otherness to borg, but when you hear it gives human personality and if you can show the borg logic and morality is equal to any other. It gives them a powerful presence and if later the borg when don’t talk when asked to it gives them a sense of unsettling divune power. The mistake was the body.

So how many hours did the movie cover? at the latest, the hive was destroyed at 11:20 AM MDT on the 5th. The Borg bombarded the site during the night and they said "tomorrow morning" when referring to the launch, though colloquially the day starts at dawn, rather than at midnight. So the timeline of the Borg takeover of the ship was anything between 8 and 14 hours, I think?

It struck me as odd that the borg couldn't, for instance, simply march up to the photon torpedo launcher or a phaser array, plug in, (thereby bypassing the ship's computer), and simply input commands directly...

It’s not inconceivable for a phaser to reset to low stun if dropped. Much like modern hand guns with trigger safeties, to prevent accidental discharge from falling... It’s a stretch but hey Star Trek is about nit picking let’s be real.

If the borg replace entire hands with tools, then they might have a difficult time opening certain types of hatches that might require 2 hands to open. Some hatches could be "Auto-Locking". Also lack of depth perception has to be quite cumbersome when you replace one eye with a different sensor. Why couldn't they mount the 3rd sensor on the fore head like a 3rd eye and use tech to overlay the sensor information like AR vision over the minds image? Also why leave the organic eyeball open to regular environmental air? Why not put on Borg Protective Goggles to shield the eyes? As far as the Tricorder, maybe Borg are using it as a method to try to hack into StarFleet computer systems? When you're cut off from the larger collective, the total some of knowledge available to your local collective is limited to what all the individuals remember. They might not have access to the total sum knowledge of the Borg, so they got to make do with what they have. Ergo hacking the Tricorder might be the most effective method given limited resources available.
