I'm more shocked Picard couldn't identify with Ro Laren in later episodes "Preemptive Strike" and actually be one of the Federation Captains, who sided with the Maquis instead of against them. Sisko's reasons made sense, since he was a career military man and never knew Cardassian brutality until DS9/Dominion War. Picard on the other hand, should be as shell-shocked a Captain Maxwell from this episode.

Wen L. You forget till tptb need rl ptsd long term effects to matter our characters go back to normal because they’re so highly evolved and enlightened humanity. At least O’Brien did have lingering effects of his virtual imprisonment to the point of suicide. Would have been an interesting jab from Picard to laugh at Gul Madred when stripping him of personhood by referencing the Borg did worse what the hell can you do.

Warner doesn't have a booming voice like some of the other great actors, but the way he speaks conveys an...almost Godfather like menace. He's in control, and his mode of speech perfectly conveys that fact to the audience. Even in his Gorkon scenes in Undiscovered country, you got the impression this was not someone to trifle with. He's one of my favorites to be sure.

Maybe the initial eye level was done on purpose. Think about it this way, at that point in the story, Picard believes both himself and Madred to be equals; held by the treaty. We have level eye shot with Madred, and then one with Picard. But then the next shot has both, and there you see a height difference. And then there is their discussion on archaeology where they both seem to be seated at equal level. As time moves on, Picard is lower, and Madred is higher.

Sadly this episode had not follow up on the mental health of Picard. This is why I love the Borg stuff with Picard. You have the excellent played follow up in "Family," you have the interaction of Picard and Sisko to Picard in First Conctact to Picard on the Artifact in Picard. It is a very deep scar that remains with his character that the writers continue to pick at.

@@therizinosaurus214 I think the episode did have an effect on Picard way more than people give it credit. Picard got more militarized to a decree cause of his experience with the Cardassians. And "TNG" showed the Cardassians as openly arrogant and never denying their crimes. A big plus from "DS9" which started that whole thing that they do deny their crimes.

The federation already denied their knowledge of what Picard was doing so he’s not actually a prisoner of war. I’d like to think the cardasians expected that and planned for it so the torture would be legal not because they wouldn’t do so if it weren’t but because it couldn’t be used against them in future diplomacy.

Lore Reloaded: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oseKfa-Jr5ysg58.html: Do you think it may, perhaps, signify a false sense of security in this camera angle "stance", so to speak. Picard "thinks" he is going to babble his way out of this on equal grounds when Picard knows full well he is in danger, but later on we see who really holds the power when they interrogate Picard. The camera facing the cardassian at eye level and not at Picard's height isn't an accident. The purpose is to put the audience directly into the scene. The cardassian isn't looking at Picard in that shot, he is looking at YOU. Sizing YOU up. Weighing his options against YOU. The viewer is the one meant to be intimidated by that shot, Picard is just our proxy.

David Warner played 3 characters in through out Star Trek. The Gul Madred is perhaps his best. This episode understands the insidious under pinning of torture. Any information gotten from torture is likely fake, anything said is likely to end the pain... and the pain does not end. It is to break your will or have you form a "need" towards the capture (Stockholm Syndrome). They do this through physical pain, mental pain, emotional pain. Or they will find a common ground to from so empathy. Or fake empathy themselves (I don't want to se your tortured, help to help you). They may even do a more sadistic version of good cop/ bad cop where one while assaults you and other will "rescue" you, all to build twisted sense of trust. After you are broken, you are easier to indochinite. Once you are on their side or way of thinking far more likely to freely give any information or aid they request. If you break but can't be molded- then you are of no farther use (unless you have wealthy or powerful family and friends) and your disposed of. If you dont break, they will continue to try until the effort is not worth the work and dispose of you (again unless you have wealthy or powerful family and friends). If you don't stand how can this work, look at military training. You sign-up to be put through and pushed passed physical, emotional, and mental limits. To break you as an individual, because they dont want individuals. They want a group that can act as one, maneuver as one, think as one, behave and act as one. All this is to decrease costly mistakes, and improve survivability for entire group.

It’s almost like Cardassians were written in such a way that allowed them to be skilled interrogators sometimes without the use of physical harm. And like in the DS9 episode the tribunal they strip O’Brien of his humanity too and they casually go about hurting him but not to the point of brutalizing him for the sake of it, only to dissuade resistance. It’s just another day at the office for the interrogators. How about the little story they tell about Garak in the episode where the tal shiar and the obsidian order nuke the founders homeworld, how he stared at someone for hours. This is called good writing and Kurtzman would be wise to watch all of DS9.

You want more JL ass time? He could just say "Talk Human. Fine. No talk? You are stripped of everything." Then just four minutes of JLP hanging naked, barely moving. The restraint frame slowly starts to turn. It is like waiting for the Death Star passed the moon to get into range to fire on the rebels. Just as the light crests his bits, it cuts to a commercial.
