Loretta Lynn was an American singer-songwriter. Her career spanned six decades in country music, during which she released multiple gold albums. She had hits such as "You Ain't Woman Enough", "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin'", "One's on the Way", "Fist City", and "Coal Miner's Daughter".
In this episode I travel to her old homeplace on a hill in Butcher Holler, Van Lear Kentucky!

Loretta is of my parent's generation. My mom grew up coal camp to coal camp in southern WV with a violent, alcoholic father and not enough clothes or food to survive had it not been for her uncle. My dad raised us in a rough lumber sall mill shack very similar to this one, that he worked on for years. We started out with no running water. He finally began to work regularly in the mines when I was 10. But we had cattle, chickens, hogs, and multiple big gardens. We butchered a steer and hog and sold the others. Always a cellar full of canned goodness for winter. My dad sold eggs, milk, buttermilk, and butter to his buddies at the mines. All right here in a holler outside Welch WV. My childhood was wonderful and I wouldn't trade it for anybody's! Thanks for helping me reminisce. Love your channel.

I loved Loretta Lynn's singin' and all of her songs 🎵 I knew her mama Clara Webb Butcher..Loretta's mama took care of my grandpa when he got sick ..when Clara and her hubby & her children except for Loretta moved from their Butch Hollow, Kentucky home in the latter part of the 1950's, to the town here of Wabash, Indiana just down the road from my hometown of North Manchester, Indiana..Loretta Lynn's mama would always fix me and my older sister fruit juices of grapefruit, apple and pineapple juice Loretta had just gotten started in her singin' career during those years early to mid 1960's and her one daughter Brenda Webb that I knew her by before she became known as Chrystal Gale her stage name she was like only 2 or 3 yrs or so older than me back than I was 8- 11

I grew up with Loretta and Patsy Cline matter of fact I still play their CDs although I also have their records and my grandbabies just laughed at those records. To me those were the happiest times. Both ladies sing about life and it made women not feel so lonely or that they're the only ones in a situation. They gave us hope that everybody goes through certain hardness in life but we always make it through. Then we look back on these memories with fondness and gross. I would like to thank God for both these ladies. I know they're in heaven at the moment singing for God. So thank you for walking this down this road of memories God bless

I cannot understand how living in the big city is better than the country. I am one of those who would live in the holler before I lived in the city. If I won the biggest lottery ever I would still live in the country. Just a bigger house and large stocked pond to fish.

I have lived in Kentucky all my life. I remember when comanagers daughter came out. I never heard of that town but I never made it to there to see where Larreta grew up now I live in Florida, but one day it is on my bucket list before I die, I would like to see where Loretta grew up and visit her home in Tennessee but I started thinking even though her husband took her away from Kentucky to start over in Tennessee or whatever the case might be all those lands there throughout Kentucky he could’ve gotten her ranch there he really didn’t need to take her so far away. I think her family should make another movie of Loretta throughout her life from the beginning to the end I will definitely watch it. It’s just a thought, but it would be nice if they could make another movie.

I too am from Johnson county Kentucky and really enjoyed your video. We used to ride horses all over Butcher holler back in the 70's ! I only get to go home twice a year, Easter and Thanksgiving and the occasional funeral, my Grandparents have gone to be with the Lord, as well as 2 aunts and in December of 2020 my uncle became another coal mining statistic ! As I lose more kin, it feels more and more lonely !! I try not to watch videos of Eastern Kentucky because it makes me so homesick that I just end up bawling, anyway thank you for the wonderful memories of home !

I appreciate very much this visit to the home place of Loretta Lynn. For some reason I was struck by the latter part of the video where what I will call "textured" shots of the structure and the music are presented without narration. There's something emotionally moving to that idea, at least for me - like a respectful "moment of silence", when words aren't needed. :)
