Seen here is a rare and unusual consist of an Amtrak's P32AC-DM Operation Lifesaver unit 302 carrying three of Metrolink's Bombardier Bi-Level Generation 1 cars: 617, 609, and 102. This train arrived to Chicago, IL on June 3, 2023 as the Southwest Chief train #4, which departed Los Angeles, CA two days prior. The Metrolink coach cars are expected to be transferred to Milwaukee, WI on the Hiawatha.
Under the contract with the Talgo-SYSTRA joint venture, 50 of the 121 Bombardier cars, which were built between 1992 and 1993, are being rebuilt at Talgo's facilities in Milwaukee in order to add more modern amenities and improve reliability for commuters in Southern California. Once the cars are rebuilt, they will be returned to Los Angeles to resume service on the Metrolink.
