1-1-1-1!! Canadian Pacific 8808, CP 8865, CP 8549, CP 8612 southbound at mile 59 of the Mactier subdivision in Essa pulling double stack intermodal and autorack cars. (27MAR2012)
This huge CP 8808 was having an oversized meet in Baxter and then to the "mile 27 parking space" near Bolton.

Estimating an average of 25m per vehicle with a total of 180 this would be 4.5km. The engine is like 18m and the cars are much longer. Estimating roughly 70km/h and 4,5 Minutes travel time would make 5,25km. Anyways that train is just massive. Only concerned about crossing security and braking paths.

I often haul rail maintenance equipment for CN, and as awesome as seeing these beastly Intemodal trains pass by is, waiting for track clearance sucks. Especially when there are 140+ cars, and they're only doing 25kph coming off of a siding. I've spent upwards of 3 hours waiting trackside because my track protection couldn't get me a 45 minute window to mount, load and dismount the crossing. Still cool to see trains this size up close though. Great video too!

Thanks for posting this amazing train!! I posed this question deeper in one of the replies but wanted to post here as well to see if someone knowledgeable can answer. How do the 4 engines sync their pulling power? What makes say engine number 3 pull with the precise amount of force so that engine 3 and the following section does not become engine 1 or engine 2's burden to pull. On the same lines, do they also brake in tandem so as to "share" the burden of slowing the monster down?.
@JayJr2007
@JayJr2007 3 жыл бұрын
The FTO software controls each locomotive throttle and dynamic brakes independently via wireless connectivity depending on where that DPU is on a hill or a corner. The computer knows how to prevent slack action and other handling issues. Soon enough there will be no crew at the healm; at the very least they will be working from home. Its high time Canada went to positive train control anyway. Cheers & thanks for watching. Jason

I chase CP trains configured like this on the old Soo Line Paynesville sub in Minnesota although they’re not nearly this long and consist mostly of empty grain hoppers. It’s a real challenge to get ahead of them. In the Soo Line days they would run with just enough power to barely get the trains over the hills on the roller-coaster track. The engines were working so hard it looked like they were grinding up mountain grades on track that was maybe 1%. That’s no longer the case as CP spent tons of money to get train speeds up and then provide more than enough power to run them at 50+ mph. It’s always a little unnerving when the mid-train DPU shoots by at flank speed in the middle of light, high center-of-gravity grain cars, many of them old Pullman Standards. To watch the transformation of the old 30mph Soo Line into the new 50 mph CP was a mixed blessing as it became apparent that the days of the easy train chasing were gone. There wouldn’t be much hope of playing catch-up to this train, would there?
@IFLYBELL
@IFLYBELL Жыл бұрын
I can't rememeber a time when the Paynesville sub was ever 30 mph! Must have been WAY before my time and I have been running trains on that sub for over 20 years. Track speed from humboldt to Hammel was 25, Hamel to mp87 40 nad mp87 to Glenwood was 60. We were restricted to a max of 45 mph due to "fuel conservation". Hunter never spent any money upgrading any of the subdivisions on the property. If someone said its not safe or no, he would terminate them on the spot! We are running trains in excess of 10,000 feet and 18,000 tons with two units!

It seemed the distributed power was perfectly matched strategically for this train. Much despised but top notch railroader Hunter Harrison when he was CEO insisted on this sort of matching enabling CP Rail to reduce the stable by some 500 locomotives saving many many $$ in leasing costs. That stretch of mainline between Essa and Tottenham on the Mactier Sub used to need pusher engines coming uphill from Lambton Yard Toronto in the days of steam.

0:58 so I see the train pulling the cars, but at 1:57 I see another cab going in reverse. So is the cab at 1:57 also helping pull, or is just connected on? Also at 3:15 theres another cab so is there also a person in there controlling that cab and helping pull, or is it just connected? In kinda confused someone pls tell me.

Theres a crew controlling the leading engine upfront and the other three engines are all there helping to push/pull because of the size of the train. Those three are all being controlled from the leading unit.

@@HavelockYard thanks for that reply. I always assumed there was some sort of data connection that was link when the cars and brake pipes were connected between the cars. Never thought of radio. Cheers
