I believe that nobody else went out to help because they thought that there was only 1 person drowning and Jack was already there to help. It's only when he gets back and he tells them that there's a second person drowning that the group becomes aware. So everyone's actions make sense given the context.

@CarmenYoung

@@artemis2569 I honestly don’t know what I would do in that situation, because I’ve not been in it. I like to think were I on that island in their situation, I would, but I am also a pretty confident swimmer and in the safety of my house not actually having to make that choice so I can’t say for sure. And I’m not saying anyone was right or wrong morally for the choice they made either, to clarify, just that I think most of us would find it difficult to listen to someone screaming for help as they drown and to not do anything, especially if we believed ourselves capable of saving them. And, you don’t find out until after that initial scene about the riptide, which I mentioned in my discussion changes things.

@@CarmenYoung i completely agree that it would be devastating to hear someone scream for help and not be able to do anything. I am being honest, I myself am a confident swimmer but against the sea or the ocean you can't win so I wouldn't go after her either. Props to Boone and Jack for trying though.

- I agree what you've said about what Jack's father told him in the flashback when he got into a fight as a kid BUT a parents reaction to that specific situation might change if that keeps happening repetitively. Considering he told Jack "You can't be a hero. You can't save EVERYONE" in his speech hints that Jack frequently finds himself in similar situations trying to save people and maybe hurt himself in the process either physically or emotionally. If that keeps happening you could probably tend to stop encouraging his "helpful" nature and try to lean him towards staying away and protecting himself. - Knowing how to swim and being confident enough to jump into the ocean to save someone is very very different. Even in a pool it's not easy to save another person from drowning and in the ocean it's something much much more difficult. - There could be thousands of reasons why Jack's mother didn't go herself to Australia to bring her husband back. Maybe they weren't getting along at the time and she thought he wouldn't listen to her, maybe she wasn't confortable with searching him at bars, night clubs and stuff (probably slightly risky places) in a foreign country, maybe she had things to do in her own town and couldn't leave them, maybe she had a health condition preventing her from travelling overseas, maybe she thought because Jack doing something caused/triggered him to go Australia and he'll have a higher chance to agree coming back if they talk it out with Jack. You're keeping your attention to details, I like that, and sharing your thoughts is absolutely ok but I'm beginning to think you seem to judge people or situations (in the show, of course) too quickly wthout thinking much. If they're 100% natural reactions, I'm sorry, and of course you're free to share what's on your mind. However, if "feeling obligated to keep saying something in almost every scene for the sake of a better reaction" causing those quick judgemental comments, I'm respectfully warning you that it's not necessary. You don't need to decide your thoughts immediatetly on what you see/hear on the show, especially moral situations or character decisions. You can be "ooh" and keep your silence and share your thought at the end of the episode which are more grounded and well-digested. Plus those quick comments while still the dialogue/scene going on, can make you miss important lines.

If you're caught in a riptide, it's best not to try to swim against it because you'll just tire yourself out. A riptide will not pull you under, but if you tire yourself out, you may not have the energy to stay afloat. But you shouldn't just allow it to take you out further from the shore. It's best to swim parallel to the shore. That way, you will be able to swim out of the riptide. Then follow the breaking waves back into shore at an angle. This is advice from NOAA.

This episode explains why Jack was a bit harsh with the memorial thing they did in the last episode. He didn't have the chance to bury his father, so he couldn't move on from everything that happened. And a lot happened between them as in any backstory of any character you will see on the show. I'm not spoiling you, but keep in mind that Lost will give you a tiny piece of information within those flashbacks so you can later put them all in chronological order. It's like a puzzle.

Jack's father definitely gave him a complex, but he was also right. He didn't want his kid to be destroyed by every failure, which he clearly does. But I disagree that he thought jack failed because he cared. I don't think that was his point. Jack doesn't have what it takes to fail and keep going, and that's noble but what father would want his son to endure that kind of pain? Also hope you remember that Charlie says he doesn't swim, not that he can't. A lot of people remember that line wrong, and there's a major difference between those two sentences. I don't think anybody on the beach even realized Boone had already gone out after Johann. Some of them surely didn't even know what was happening, they just saw a crowd and gathered to find out. It would also be unsafe for a bunch of people to swim out near a riptide to save one person or two people, it's so easy to get swept up it'd be putting more and more people in danger. And a group will always defer to the assumed leaders of the pack in those situations. Otherwise chaos ensues.

@@MarieAnne. Absolutely. Which Christian was not good at. There were a lot better ways to help his son learn to compartmentalize, and a lot better ways to communicate his concern. And thus we have Jack, as he is, for better and for worse. His own father's failing reflect in the man he's become.

The producers of the show paid a company to create a show intro like a regular one; fancy music, visuals from the show and actors, along with the acting credits. They didn't really like the results; the company was paid for their work, then the producers went with the flying logo and 5 seconds of dramatic music.

Carmen, are you sure it was Sasha Belov aka Neil Jackson of "Make It or Break It" that youve seen as a background character on "Lost" ? Went looking through IMDb & Wikipedia and in his bios they don't have hi. being in "Lost" and no one fitting the blonde guy description is listed on the Lost Wikia / Lostpedia site under passengers. Sasha Belov ( Neil Jackson )

Oh, I'm 0% sure; there's just been like once or twice a character in the background looked similar to him! Like, in this episode around the 37:20 mark of the episode there are three characters sitting away from people around a small fire in the forefront of the shot. The guy in the middle looks like him to me, but I have no clue if it is actually is. Just struck something in me lol To clarify: the time marker wants to take you to my reaction, but I'm talking about thirty seven minutes into the episode not my reaction, in case that was confusing!

@@kuhpunkt SPOILER It's fine now, because it's been edited to 'Flight Attendant'. But previously, it also said 'Cindy'. Knowing her actual name reveals that she will be appearing again at some point. At this stage, we assume (if we even give her a second thought) that she was killed in the crash, and it's unlikely we would learn her name through another plane flashback (as flight attendants don't tend to go by their first names to passengers). So I therefore see 'Cindy' as a spoiler.

'how his dad told him, if he cares, he's failing'. That's not what his dad told him, and it's not what his dad meant. He told him, when you fail, you just don't have what it takes. He didn't tell his son he didn't have what it takes to be successful, he was telling him he doesn't know how to handle failure, and we will all fail. Usually multiple times. As we saw in this very episode, Jack does not handle failure well, at all. And, how do you know his dad is a hallucination?

It’s pretty clear. Plus, you can see in just 5 episodes Jack has this complex of “I’ll do it.. me!” Dunno.. people surprise me every day, even after 36 years.
