I love that Hurley is the only person to soften up Danielle Rousseau, even just a little bit. When she lowers her weapon and just stares at him and then he hugs her... it's the most hilarious, sweetest thing ever. RIP, Mira Furlan aka Danielle. You were fantastic in this role (and as my good friend tells me, was also amazing on Babylon 5).

The woman pulling the loto numbers was going to sleep with Sawyer before Hibbs interupts them in "Outlaws". Also, the actress (Brittany Perrineau) is the wife of Harold Perrineau (Michael).

The guy that plays Hurley, I can’t remember his name, was in an episode of How I Met Your Mother and when they ask for a random phone number, he instantly fired off that list of numbers. Was not expecting it, but it was hilarious. Hadn’t watched Lost before seeing that episode so it I didn’t get it during my first watch of HIMYM lol.

I always loved this episode. The whole series had me hooked by this point, but this one really sparked my imagination back in the day and added to the “what does it all mean” fun of the show.

I like that Rick is bringing up Lovecraft because numbers and mathematical formulas are the basis and denominator of "magic" in his Mythos.

You guys should watch Cinema Paradiso. It’s the most beautiful film I’ve ever seen, EVER. It’s on Amazon prime video. It’s in Italian but theres subtitles and it doesn’t take away from the beauty of it

"Walt crashed the plane". Alright, there it is folks. Rick's first official "big picture" theory. Would love to get him to commit to a few more before any reveals. Maybe at end of season? Also, LOVE that he drew the parallel with Lovecraft. On paper LOST really is a Lovecraftian story. Strangers with mysterious backgrounds, an unexplainable monster, themes of madness and mystery, etc. It's not Chthulu and the Victorian era, but it absolutely plays around with Lovecraft themes and story structure in modern ways.

27:30 You do well to only concern yourself with how the characters react rather than trying to figure everything out. Anything goes on a magical island where things don't quite make sense. Hugo's strength is LUCK. Locke's strength is FAITH. Jack's strength is SCIENCE.

I’ve never seen Lost before but I really love theories so I’m gonna put my theory out there which I think needs some work but I think I’m on the right track. 8 15 : Flight Number 42 : Possibly Meaning of Life 23 or 16 : I thought could maybe be the number of main characters So I counted the main characters seems to be 14 at the moment but we’ll either meet more or ppl like Rose and French lady count idk So I’m thinking the code means after the flight the group of “chosen ones” will discover the meaning of life aka the island is some kind of heaven like place

I think i read somewhere that the writers said they chose the numbers based on numbers that had been used in the show up that point. So 4 years of lock being in a wheelchair and flight 815 came before they decided 4, 8, and 15 were some of the numbers. I'm pretty sure 42 is an homage to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as well.

David Fury: J.J., Damon and I met at some restaurant on our day off to break that episode. Hurley winning the lottery was Damon’s idea. But I believe the “Numbers” and their importance was J.J.’s. When I started writing the episode, I already figured to use numbers that had been heard on the show… 4 (number of years Locke was in wheelchair); 8, 15 (Flight 815), etc. When I confirmed my number choices with Damon, I was still missing the last number. I had thought to make it “42” (an homage to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - Answer to the Ultimate Question). When Damon had the same idea, that clinched it. It was my idea to have the numbers engraved on the hatch at the end of the episode. After that, I can only assume Damon is the easter egg dropper.

So them just making up some numbers at random I dont buy at all LOL

I hadn't really thought about the birthday thing very much, but you're right -- my dad's best friend and I share the same birthday, a family I used to babysit for when I was in high school had their third child on my birthday, and recently my cousin had her first baby on my birthday. Wacky coincidences. (And it's always fun to hear about celebrities, musicians, writers or actors who share the same birthday with you. Like that means anything, but still, it's fun.)

Something I never noticed before, this is the episode after Hurley's walkmans batteries died. Almost like his distraction is gone and he has to start living life on the island like the others survivors have. I noticed a bit of the first season was him coming up with distractions.

If Im not mistaken, like 25,000 people won the lottery playing the Lost numbers and matched 4 of the numbers. So they only ended up getting 150$ each.

These numbers have been played in the lottery by fans since the show aired and have won, I believe more than once. The number 42 in the sequence was intentionally added by the writers as a reference to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, written by the late, great Douglas Adams. I think there's also always been a real superstition about the number 23 in the real world as well.

If you have never seen the BBC series of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that would be a great reaction. It's only 6 episodes and covers about the same as the first two books. It's a lot more fun than the big budget movie was. It's a lot closer to the original radio series.

I like those reaction a lot, but I think that for the sake of content they are going a little too deep, Rick is fed with a lot of discussion points that were not intended to be noticed until later for narrative enjoyment
