People have been saying that Charlie should've run out of the door for years. But the way I've always saw it was that in that split second, his gut instinct was to protect Desmond. Yes, he should've been much more rational. Yes, he should've been more logical. But his immediate gut instinct was putting the lives of others before himself. You may call him stupid but he was selfless in that moment. And when he realised that he was gonna die, he used the time he had left to give Desmond an important message. Still the "best" and most heroic death in the show.

@@kdizzle901 He was prepared to die because of Desmond's vision about Claire when he initially dived down. But when he flipped that switch, he thought the whole vision thing was irrelevant and false. "So much for fate" So when he closed the door on Desmond, I don't think in that split second he was thinking about the whole vision prophecy thing, only just to protect Desmond. Only when the water started rushing in and during that slow mo closeup scene of his face that Charlie realised the prophecy was true and accepted his fate in order for Claire to get rescue.

IT WAS NOT TO SAVE DESMOND, FOR F* SAKE. It was to fulfill Desmond's vision, in order to his friends to be rescued. Geez! Over than 10 years, and people still don't get this show.

That reveal of the Flashforward is Still one of the BEST twists in tv. And the way they did was GENIUS. They had conditioned us for 3 seasons to get used to the flashbacks and to expect them and then BAM. Lol. Also, Suraj was seemingly Trying to explain this but seemed like he didn't want to push it too much or something: regarding Charlie's death, yes, he Could've run out of the switch room and saved himself, but the important thing is that he *Purposefully* chose Not To. Desmond saw in his flash that Claire and Aaron were saved but that the only way it would happen was if the series of events happened exactly as Desmond saw them, Including Charlie dying. So it wasn't stupidity, it was a CHOICE. Charlie Chose to sacrifice himself so that his "family" would be saved.

Charlie did it for protecting Desmond. Desmond, without knowing about the bomb, was about to get in the room because he saw Penny on the screen. It looked like there wasn't time to go out of the room, convince/stop Desmond not to go in and close it from outside. Plus, Charlie didn't know how much time he had even if there was just enough time, but it was very on edge for sure.

No... Charlie could have left. He didn't because Desmond told him he should die in order to Claire and the Others to be rescued. That was his motivation... To fulfill his mission, and It ALL started with Jack bringing him back in 01x11.

I think Charlie closed the door so the whole station wouldn't be flooded, only the room he was in, so the equipment would keep working. And he couldn't close the door from the outside.

This episode is the reason I still consider Lost the best tv show of all time, I still remember the shock of finding out they got off the island. I could not stop freaking out all afternoon, also knowing I had to wait so long to find out what it all meant.

The way every story and every plot converge towards this finale is masterfull and amazing, and just sets this finale apart from any other finale in my opinion. Everything pays off, and subtle stuff are introduced that will rezonate through the fourth season and have impact in season four finale and beyond. This is just the best season finale ever in my opinion. Also just as an explanation: Jack bringing up his father in these two parts is 1. so he could get more meds, and 2. during his conversation with that doctor he mentions his dad because later in season 4 we find out he was hallucinating and seeing his father. That's why he started taking meds. Subtle clues like these just elevate this show to another level, unreached by any other show neither before nor after LOST. Also, for those wandering why Charlie couldn't get out and shut the door, the door could not be sealed from outside probably and would have opened when the pressure of the water reached a high enough level to open it. Got that just now, while watching these reatctions.

"Not Pennys Boat" D'= My tears don't fall they crash around me. One of the most heartbreaking moments in this show and Sawyers "That's for taking the kid off the raft." oooft man this episode hurts me on levels! Such good reactions guys, Lost is the real OG (Rana, the door could only be locked from the inside as far as I can tell, everything would have flooded if left open).

I was going through a painful breakup during the break between season 3 and season 4 of Lost. I had never watched an episode up to that point but my friend, whose couch I was sleeping on in Brooklyn, had it on DVD. I caught up within a span of two weeks as I binged the show, crying in almost every single episode. The theme of feeling broken and looking for some sort of meaning in the chaos resonated powerfully with me. It still does.

I'm so glad I found this reaction, even though it is from several years ago. I feel like I'm watching it with friends. I'm also reminded how amazing this show was. Others have come after trying to emaluate it but most if not all have failed. Case in point is the Walking Dead with their flashbacks. I think the reason it didn't work for them (besides inferior writing) was that the flashbacks had no real bearing on the present. I also am willing to argue that, although there were fumbles, the show remained great through the end, especially after repeat viewings. I strongly disagree with those who say the show did not have answers. And the ending was beautiful.

Charlie had to close the door, those doors only lock from the inside. Desmond heard Penny but did not see Mikhail - he would've run in, killing them both. Once the water started flowing in, with the open door, the whole station would've sank (the way moon pools work is by maintaining fairly specific air pressure). The only option was for him to close the door and lock Desmond out. And by the time the water pressure would've stabilized enough that he could've actually swam out the hole (assuming he could fit) he would've had no chance of making it to the surface before drowning. Charlie had to die. It was just a matter of whether he was going to save Desmond or not, and deliver a very important message.

When my ex wife and I watched this episode, she literally "LOST" her mind thinking Jin, Sayid, and Bernard were dead, I thought se was going to broke the TV, total meltdown. I had to assure her it would be alright.

I wanted to go to college in HI but assumed I couldn’t financially, then I moved to Oahu post college and had to move from there after 2 years (2016-2018) for financial reasons and because I had to get sober. After six years (2 years sober) I accepted a job on Maui today. So I can officially say “I’M GOING BAAAAAACCKKKKKK!”

@@sophiamiller1238 not really they aren't. LOST was inspired by the books from GoT which btw study every character in every chapter. Both have many mysteries and mythology... but for me the characters in LOST are way better portrayed, studied and developed throughout the show than those from GoT. Just my opinion.

@@Lost_theothers Yes you know the struggle we went through. I say struggle but it was fun times. There hasn't been a show since that has been "event viewing" for me since LOST. Game of Thrones could've been it but I didn't get into it until season 6. And even then I don't have the group of friends or time now that I did when LOST was on when I was in college. We had LOST viewing parties in college. I feel so old now 😂

I have always felt that Charlie knew the entire station was going to flood if he didn’t shut the door and he had to lock Desmond out because he knew Penny was on the monitor and would of tried to get in the room.

I watched one of those “shouldn’t be alive” type shows (on KZfaq) about this boat that capsized and began to sink as it filled with water. There were 3 or 4 people trapped inside this “room” with one opening that water was pouring into. They tried and tried to swim out but couldn’t because the force of the water flowing in prevented them from doing so. One guy had to basically use his legs (with his back propped against a wall) to push his friends through the hole so they could survive. He saved his friends but couldn’t escape himself. All of that to say, Charlie could not have swam out of the window as it filled with water. Once the room was full, maybe he could have escaped but he never would have made it to the surface. That’s assuming the hole was big enough to swim through.

I'm sure people know this, but just to clarify, the reason Charlie didn't swim out or run through the door was that he chose to die. Desmond told Charlie that his vision of Charlie's death was paired with another vision of Claire leaving the island, so Charlie felt that he had to die to ensure that outcome. Charlie was also just ready to die -- it was either die now and have it be his choice, or die at some point in the near future anyways.

The Charlie thing I think is that if he didn't seal the door during the flood, the whole station would have gone down, and Desmond probably wouldn't be able to survive. Maybe? That's why Charlie had to stay behind, to seal the door

The reason Charlie closed the door and let himself die was to fulfill Desmonds vision. He believed in Desmond so fully he didn't want to alter the future. Sure he could've survived but that would've changed things, much like all the other times Desmond prevented Charlie from dying. It was a true sacrifice with Charlie dying a hero.

i didn't really get it when it first aired but i feel like if it weren't locked from the inside then the door would've broke and everything would've been flooded before they could ge suits on

I got a little annoyed at Suraj for pointing out the name Hoffs-Drawlar though. Thank god Nikki and Rana didn't catch it.

Btw show got bad after this point , should have ended at season 4 finale but they had to do time travel and introduce numerous plot holes but I still love the show !!

Charlie didn't walk out because Desmond's vision fortold that if Charlie didn't die this time, Claire and Aaron wouldn't be rescued. So Charlie knew he had to die so they could get off the island...a noble and selfless act........

@bruce wayne Regardless of the current chain of events, Charlie was following the premonition of Desmond, and up to that point, Desmond had always been right. Desmond specifically told him that if he didn't turn off the signal and in fact, die doing so, Claire and Aaron would not be rescued. He trusted Desmond to be correct. That is why he slammed the hatch door so Desmond couldn't come in. He really didn't have any time to process other facts and speculations.

Charlie had to make sure Desmond survived to give them Penny's message, that the boat isn't hers, and the people on it aren't who they say they were. The only way to do that, was to seal Desmond off from the grenade, and write on his hand. And the porthole isn't big enough to swim out of.

I dunno...hospitals don't seem to be great at keeping updated records. Every time I bring my mother to a doctor's appointment I update her medications list and at the next appointment it still hasn't been updated. Ever.

I am not sure how it works in the states but I believe it stays the same unless you actively change it. I guess he didn't get to change it for some reason. Things like the shock of being rescued, reuniting with his mother and readjusting to life, concentrating on the lie about what happened, Kate's murder trials, shock of learning about Claire, then the craziness which leads to his depression probably get in the way to do stuff like that. I guess the only relatively settled, calm times he had on that 3 years was the time he lived together with Kate and it didn't last long.

We must remember that Charlie had to die, he was gonna die, he kept evading it, he chose to go on his own terms, and I may remember incorrectly but he also did it so the desmond vision with penny came true?? something of that nature

Just watching you watching lost is bringing back so much memories...Lost is an experience...I almost forgot it, what watching every episode and waiting for the next was like. Especially these episodes with THIS insane cliffhanger. I'm kinda reliving my own experience through you guys. Thanks for that. Also, I think Nikki is beautiful. Just throwing out there.

When Nikki laughs whenever Ben gets fucked up also the end when Suraj is just laughing and yelling We HAve To go back and Nikki is just sitting there confused as fuck is golden.
