I think the reason Daniel was so upset about the 815 wreckage was because, like Desmond, he had been subject to a lot of radiation. As a result of this, his mind (i guess) on some level remembers being there in the sventies and possibly even Charlotte's death.

Daniel doesn't want to believe in 'whatever happened, happened' anymore between the three years we saw him as he's emotionally involved in wanting to bring Charlotte back. He talks about how all this time he's forgotten the variables, so that implies he's made some revelation in his research, that being he now believes that you can change the past. He could also be pursuing this course of action as a way to prove his mother wrong, since 'all the best cowboy have [parental] issues' and as this episode shows Daniel has them as much as Jack does in trying to prove to Christian that he does have what it takes.

He was completely trapped after the purge with no potential replacement in sight. The only thing I'm confused on is how ben and the others dont seam to care about its importance or be concerned oceanic survivors landed so close and broke into the hatch. Ben didnt seam to really care about pressing the button. However I think he just remained calm and left the dharma guys to do it. Monitoring from the purge whether they abandoned it.

I think Daniel abandoning whatever happened happened is emotional, not scientific. Realizing child Charlotte is alive probably got to him. Regarding his mom, two options: If she didn't kill her son he would never have existed. Even if she had a child with Widmore that child wouldn't be Daniel. OR, whatever happened happened in which case she couldn't change the past no matter what she did.

It just feels like no matter what Kate does she's going to get hate. Do I think she's done some stupid things, yes, ut it doesn't justify the amount of hate that she gets for every little thing she says or does. Daniel is talking about setting off a hydrogen bomb so I'm sure I'd probably have the same reaction. I am a physics guy. So, Here's the explanation: 1. Daniel says whatever happened happened in 1954, where he asked to bury bomb saying the island is still present in 2004 from now, so it won't explode. In this eps, he came up with them being the variable having free will, if he uses this free will to detonate bomb to destroy the island, it will create a new time stream where the plane would successfully land. Basically he realizes that hey there's is a bomb, it ain't gonna explode on it own. What if I do it. 2. Another explanation: The bomb works on H-He fusion (matter), There is some sort of negatively charged exotic matter (kinda antimatter) on the island. The bomb energy will negate that energy (kinda matter-antimatter anihillation). First one is more promising to me.

1977 Elosie didn't know it was her son when she shot him. Whether or not she did anything to prevent Daniel from returning to the island, he would have ended up there regardless. It's just like Charlie's death or the man with the red shoes in Desmond's visions. Daniel finding the variables to change the past is what set off the chain of events that would eventually lead to the hatch being built.

Faraday told Ellie to burn H-bomb saying Island is there 30 yrs from now. Now at Ann Arbor, the idea cam to his mind is- Wait there's is a H-bomb on the Island, what if I myself detonate it to create. It would either create a paradox or different timeline. Any physisicist would probably do that.

Because it will change the outcome that will eventually course corrected itself anyway. Daniel had to die by Eliose's hand so that she could know about the future and what's happened throughout all those years. They (the one who are sent to the past) are variables. They can die anytime but those who are on the past (their present), it's a constant for them. Which means Eliose had to kill so that she would know about the future, young Ben had to be shot and the Incident will happened no matter what. You tried so hard to change the past only to create the past that you want to prevent. Ironic, isn't it?

I would change the past by intentionally not causing past events to happen. For example, if I was in a position like Eloise, remembering that I shot Daniel, I would make sure he doesn't get to the island or travel back in time for that to happen. Or in the case of Locke telling Richard what to say to his other self because he remembered it, just make it not happen by not telling Richard about it. That's the only way I can see for them to actually influence time instead of causing it to happen in a self-fulfilling prophecy type ting.

I just saw the deleted scene Stones and Boulders that Suraj talked about at 28:54 and it is true it helped me understand more clearly the motive for using a hydrogen bomb to change the past, even though I understood the reason when I first watched Lost when it first came out. @Suraj I believe they removed the scene because Daniel's new ideas about the variables and changing what happened is FALSE and an extra dialogue scene that over elaborates a false idea by a character would make it look like more factual when it's not. The incident has always happened with the hydrogen bomb already involved, what happened in 5th season finale IS and WAS ALWAYS THE INCIDENT that was talked about in the Dharma Swan Station orientation video. I am pretty positive about that but I'm still willing to hear about any other ideas that suggest otherwise. P.S: They're already on Season 6, so my comments aren't spoilers to them.

Don't forget that Eloise Hawking believes that if you try to change time, it will result in the universe course-correcting itself. She believes that anything that is supposed to happen WILL happen, and possibly in a worse way than it was supposed to happen the first time around. So she believes that if she doesn't send Daniel to the island, he's still going to die, everything with Jughead is still going to happen on the island, and Daniel's fate might be even more unhappy than it would be if she doesn't send him to the island. (For example, he'll lose his memory and never be healed before he dies if he's not sent to the island.) As for why Daniel suddenly thinks he can change time, I have to think that there's three options *Light SEASON 6 SPOILERS*: 1) He never actually changed his mind. He knew that there was going to be an incident at the Swan site, and he finally figured out that the hydrogen bomb was what would trigger it. Therefore he believed that no one would voluntarily detonate the bomb at the Swan unless he went back to the island to do it himself and convince other people to help him by lying to them and telling them it would change time. 2) It was wishful thinking. Daniel knew that he couldn't survive a hydrogen bomb detonation. That's not something that universe course-correction should be able to fix. So he's essentially trying to do something so big that the universe can't fix it, and he hopes that that'll be enough to change the whatever happened, happened rules. 3) Daniel actually ran the complex physics equations and just came to the wrong conclusion based on his research. He had an additional 3 years to work on them with a fully functional mind and knowledge of the future, so this could have led him to make certain progress and certain assumptions that he hadn't been able to make beforehand.

@@MarieAnne. I think we have to assume that Eloise knows/knew more than just what was in the journal. After all, it's extremely unlikely that Daniel's journal would mention that Desmond once found an engagement ring for Penny, had doubts, and then left it in the shop. It's also extremely unlikely that Daniel's journal would have mentioned the man in the red shoes dying. And it's impossible for his journal to have said that if the man in the red shoes hadn't been crushed by the scaffolding that he would have died in his shower the next day. Eloise appears to have a more developed version of Desmond's premonitions in addition to the journal guiding her.

Here's the "tragedy". When I first tuned into the Normies channel, Suraj was one of my favorite reactors. Even at the beginning of this Lost reaction series, I was a Suraj fan. But then I started noticing things. And at this point, my observations (for obvious reasons) are starting to sound like a broken record. 1:44 So here, Suraj connects the name of this episode "The Variable" with a previous episode "The Constant". 1:54 Then he proceeds to justify his action (like he didn't jump the gun on connecting the dots) by mockingly imitating people who point out his infractions. But this time it's okay because if Suraj hadn't connected the dots for the ladies here, they wouldn't have connected it on their own. Because surely the WRITERS wouldn't have included a line in this very episode that would allow viewers in REAL TIME to connect those dots. 15:31 Oh wait. Daniel says "I've spend so much time focused on the constants, I forgot about the variables." So I was wrong. It's a good thing Suraj connected the dots. Because if he didn't, the ladies wouldn't have connected the dots on their own when the writers put the dots in front of their faces on the writers' own timeline. 4:05 Here was an innocuous contribution by Suraj where he has a candid moment sharing something he forgot would occur on this episode. Contributions such as this are interesting and genuine and are the types of contributions that a veteran viewer SHOULD be sharing. But what it illustrates is that Suraj forgets things that are discussed on a particular episode. And the problem is he'll often blurt things (for inexplicable reasons) that we later learn he had forgotten was addressed by the WRITERS later. And then he retreats into his defensive cocoon. 4:37 Jack and Phil went up the hill... Jack and John. Didn't we say that? I don't remember if they did discuss that. But it wouldn't surprise me if they hadn't. This wouldn't be the first time he recycled some joke he heard or experienced from previous viewings of an episode with a different group of people. It wouldn't surprise me if all of his "spontaneous" quips were "winning" moments someone else had originally entertained the room with during a previous viewing (not that Jack and Phil went up the hill was particularly witty). 5:19 Rana predicts dialogue. But she gets the actual line from the subtitles a split second before it's delivered. Suraj rightly observes that that split second took a bit away from the intended reveal moment (accompanied by the dramatic music). Ironically, this is something Suraj does to the ladies ALL THE TIME! He connects dots for the ladies before they have realistic chance of connecting them on their own. He mansplains things that the writers LATER explain which similarly takes away from the dramatic intent of the events on screen as the WRITERS intended. HOWEVER, the difference between the subtitle giving them a head start and Suraj planting his own "head start" is that the former was a calculated decision. They've experienced the times where the subtitles gave away reveals (like Ethan being the one under Juliet's house). But they decided that the benefits outweighed the "costs". They've calculated that subtitles are a "necessary evil". Then there's Suraj's "contributions". Very few of his mansplanations are necessary. Very infrequently do they supplement the ladies' viewing experience. His contributions can't quite be characterized as a "*necessary* evil" because, well, they're largely not "necessary" so his contributions are simply... 10:37 Need anything more be said? No. But this was a BLATANT example of what Suraj does SO often. He blurts out a comment that the writers intended to reveal later. So the question is "why?" Why blurt such things out? In his defense, he "reacted" when it was the writers' turn to reveal what he already revealed. And kudos to him for not vilifying critics of his "contributions" at that moment at least. What he doesn't realize is that he does this thing consistently for no justifiable reason. But his "excuse"? 10:50 "I forgot she said it here." The problem? He often "forgets" that the writers "say it here" and he blurts out the writers' moment before the writers' moment because he forgets about those writers' moments. 20:00 So while most veteran viewers take this moment to ask questions to elicit thoughts from the newbie viewers, Suraj decides to mansplain the ramifications of Eloise's choices on his own. He flat out states it. 20:17 Rana patiently waits for him to say his piece before she gets to say what he didn't allow her to do first. Why did Suraj see this need to mansplain something Rana clearly understood on her own? There's that broken record thing again. 22:24 But in this episode where Suraj's infractions are so blatantly on display, this moment here encapsulates one of the biggest problems with Suraj. Rana brings up a point that Suraj had (yet again) forgotten. I can't be 100% sure, but methinks most veteran viewers would pat that newbie on the back and let that newbie explain the connection of dots on her own. What does Suraj do? When Nikki asks Rana to repeat her point, Rana starts doing so... but Suraj proceeds to interrupt her and TALK OVER HER. He wouldn't let Rana explain something she noticed. For whatever reason, he had to be the one to mansplain it. That's Suraj in a nutshell. But what do I know? I'm not an observer who starting noticing a trend. I'm just as a "hater" making shit up.

I agree with everything except "mansplaining". Being a guy has nothing to do with this it's just Suraj's big mouth wanting to "flex" on his LOST "knowledge" and is ruining it for our and their reactions. And since Nikki and Rana always say "no no it's fine" EVERY. FUCKING. TIME. he's now shitting on his own viewers for telling him to shut the fuck up over it. He does the exact same thing with their DBZA series it's actually a shit ton worse there, and it's nothing but guys there, so this has nothing to do with "Mansplaining" it's just big mouth suraj not knowing when to shut up

At this point, he's been doing it so long he's never going to stop. No matter how much people point it out or complain about it, he can't just shut up and let the ladies experience the show naturally for themselves. I gave up hope with him a long time ago. For some reason he finds it funny that he's ruining the experience of the show, not just for the ladies, but for people like myself. I haven't watched the show since it first aired years go. It would be nice to try to piece things together from my memory, but he always blurts things out or explains things before they happen, or need to be explained. It's an extremely selfish thing to do. I'm sure they have lost (no pun intended) viewers from these reactions because of him. It's a shame. When Lost is over I don't know if i'm going to be watching any more reactions with him in them.

Poor Radzinsky, in 1977 he was shot by a physicist, then he ends up locked in Swan hatch. For 15 years there, he pretty much becomes a physicist himself, and then shoots himself. Destiny goddammit...
