This video contains all the wonderful songs composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Charles Jarrott's 1973 film "Lost Horizon", inspired by the famous James Hilton novel, which had already been brought to the screen by Frank Capra in 1937.
Jarrott's film was not as successful as its authors expected, but in my opinion it is a great film that deserves to be rediscovered and valued. And there is no point in making comparisons, as many have done, because this is a musical, the other was not.
Bacharach and David had written many hits that made the history of American pop music, but the songs in this film are worth no less for their varied and melodic richness.
The songs:
00:00 Lost Horizon (Shawn Phillips)
02:06 Share the Joy (Andrea Willis & Chorus)
04:41 The World is a Circle (Diana Lee, Bobby Van & Chorus)
08:06 Living Together, Growing Together (James Shigeta, Gene Merlino
& Chorus)
14:15 I Might Frighten Her Away (Diana Lee & Jerry Whitman)
16:55 The Things I Will Not Miss (Sally Kellerman & Andrea Willis)
20:04 If I Could Go Back (Jerry Whitman)
24:22 Where Knowledge Ends (Faith Begins) (Diana Lee)
26:23 Reflections (Sally Kellerman)
28:06 Question Me An Answer (Bobby Van & Chorus)
32:56 I Come To You (Diana Lee & Jerry Whitman)

My name is Diana Lee and for 55 years I was blessed with a busy studio singing career. I provided Liv Ullmann’s singing voice for this movie, doing the songs The World is a Circle, Where Knowledge Ends (Fath Begins) and the duet I Might Frighten Her Away. My ex husband provided Peter Finch’s singing voice. Both Finch and Ullmann were delightful to work with and we all had such high hopes for this movie. OMG, bombs away!! Rotten Tomatoes gave it 17%. One day soon after I ran into George Kennedy in the market, introduced myself and we stood there together commiserating, lol

Actually the film did enormous business in its foreign markets. It returned its money to its investors. Only in America was it a financial disappointment. As for rotten tomatoes, that's not an accurate barometer in which to judge a film. There's only 6 reviews determining it and 250 people weighing in at 46%. Lost Horizon has its fans. It's a cult film. Both the DVD and Blu-ray sold out all its units.

I was a dreamy 13 when I saw this musical and fell in love with it. People who are looking at this today naturally do not understand the draw it had on many of the teens in that day. It was still a time of innocence with room to just be a kid. Sure brings back special memories. Those who do not like it, do not have to, but it is a cult classic for many of us 13 year olds of the day :) Thank you for taking us down memory lane!

Interesting point: I admit I didn't like the movie but it reminds me that we often get really good soundtrack and cast albums from such shows. Star! the Gert Lawrence biopic with Julie et al was dreary but the record album by itself was enjoyable for me, not to mention it led me to a lot of other great music I could not have recognized when I was that young. How Now, Dow Jones? has a lot of clever melodies by E Bernstein and smart-alecky lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, but I've read that the show itself, as a whole, was worse than anything in ever (I haven't seen it though). Many other examples.

@@bobjohnson1587 Most film musicals have someone whose singing is dubbed. The Sound of Music for example, the Captain, several of the nuns and the children are ALL dubbed. West Side Story, practically ALL the principals are dubbed, etc. It's very rare you can get an actor who can act the part and sing also or a singer who can sing the part but can't act it. The results can be disastrous. Look at Lucille Ball in MAME.

I don't care what the critics say, it's a feel good fantasy/adventure musical. I could also call South Pacific and Brigadoon sappy maybe less amateurish. This musical was a product of its time. Sadly, compared to other film musicals of the early 1970's (like "Cabaret"), it seemed hopelessly naive and bit sappy. At least that's how the NY critics framed it, which caused the film industry to deep-six other musicals unless there was built-in box office appeal. Musical films were considered such box office poison, that it wasn't until "Grease" much later in the decade, that there was a hoped-for revival of the genre. But "Xanadu" killed that. Bacharach and David produced a noble attempt to tell this story with song. It would have been a much bigger hit a decade earlier.

I like the spirit of what this film is trying to do because I really am intrigued by the idea or ideal of Shangra La. Who among us wouldn't want to go to a Shangra La if such a place existed? Even though it wasn't executed perfectly in many places....I still like it. A flawed masterpiece this is.

Here's my take on the film. I first heard of the film from reading a terrible review in the book "The Best, Worst and Most Unusual Hollywood Musicals". Decades later, when I finally saw this version (after having seen the 1937 version, which is terribly wordy), I was impressed, although a few scenes escaped my applause. The lyrics to "Question Me An Answer" are amateurish, and I could never really stand Bobby Van. The airplane crash, most likely, would have injured everyone, but all are unscathed. How did Chang know of the airplane flight, which brought the visitors out of harm's way, and how did he contact the pilot/hijacker to tell him to fly the plane to Shangri-La? The choreography in the library scene is awkward (up and over the action, and in back of a table??) The film has its flaws (because Hilton's story can not conceivably be filmed), but when it works, it is magical. Had the film been produced ten years earlier, maybe it would have been widely appreciated, but the timing, perhaps, was wrong. As it stands, viewers should take their favorite moments from the film and judge it from that angle.

It IS very likely, that, because of TSOM that this film exists. Because the former was such a runaway smash hit, the thinking at that time, in Hollywood, was that big budget musicals were back in vogue. The problem with the score for this film is that it’s totally wrong for the other worldy type setting. The film needed a Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration and what they got was Bacharach and David. Now there’s nothing wrong with Bacharach and David but their music was too pop to suit this production. Also the choreography was poor, surprisingly Hermes Pan was responsible for it. Pan had a great career but he was past his best at this point and he didn’t have a Fred Astaire to work with. This might not have completely awful if it had not been a musical.

This is a cool place to sing about circles and cycles and questions, and things which are good to sing and think about. :) But it's a horrible place for women to live. Based on the plot line and what the men living there say to the men who have just arrived, once grown, women are given zero free will and they have to go marry whichever man that wants them. If another man wants them after awhile, they are required to leave the first man and go with the second man, to marry the second man, so there is no fighting. So it's essentially a slave condition for the women who have their free will taken from them as they get passed around from man to man to man, and have children by way of non-consensual sex (rape) since they did not consent to the marriage or the sex, and then the teacher teaches all these children/brainwashes them that this sort of way to love each other is normal. If they find a man they want to be with monogamously for life and try to leave the compound as one girl did, they die (in a fantasy way through sudden old age). So basically it's a cult and this is sexual slavery. Just thought you ought to know.

If you are a nitrogen-based (vs carbon) creature you would think/act differently. If you have more/less than normal number of limbs, body parts in the "wrong" places, you would think/act differently. You are judging based on what you're used to or programmed to. And lastly, you think you are living in a better world imperfect but trying to be otherwise (as if democracy/capitalism is perfect). They are living together in a closed environment/system that sustains them, long-lived & almost immortal. And to think that most wanted to live forever.

Oh my, what does Ba'ku mean? Or this: " It will be completed the 13th b'ak'tun. It is 4 Ajaw 3 k'ank'in and it will happen, a 'seeing'. It is the display of B'olon-Yokte in a Great investiture." DO YOU KNOW THE TRANSLATION? Its Mayan and ancient foretelling of THE END.

The "Fertility Dance", with the muscle men dancing in their orange loin cloths, was cut from the film after the hysterical laughter it evoked among preview audiences. I think they should have kept it in, it was the most entertaining part of this laughably awful movie!

The younger Bobby Van was highlighted in That's Entertainment, Part 2 where he performed the delightful hopping dance from Small Town Girl. I'm so glad that he had a chance to shine in that film retrospective. In 2014 Hugh Jackman creates his own version of the dance for the opening of the Tony Awards that he hosted. He even briefly salutes a TV monitor that was screening Van's dance as he hops by.

The film is an overproduced mess and doesn't work - with the exception of Bobby Van, they cast actors who couldn't sing or dance, and the whole movie seems manufactured, which it was. But presented like this, it really had some fun songs. It's a shame they were lost in a subpar movie.

I’ve never heard of this movie until today when I saw it on the list of the worst movie musicals ever. I couldn’t believe it because Bacharach music makes even B movies, like The Blob good, but the first two song started really weak. Not the level that other works of him reach.

Never saw this movie simply because I saw no need for a musical based on the novel and the quintessential 1937 film is more than enough justification for not remaking the original in any way. I just happened upon this music video and find it truly sophomoric, asinine and pathetic. Watch at your own peril.
