You have to know his history. He is referring to his dads songs. Hank Williams. The father of country music. Your Cheating Heart was just one of his dads mega hits back in the 50’s. Jr has had an amazing career on his own

Frankly, I think Hank jr's music is FAR better than was his dad's. Far better. Unfortunately, trying to live up to that pedestal that Hank Sr was on, nearly killed Jr. I am SO glad that he survived his accident, and created all of his wonderful music!

I love how you guys get Country music. It's got a bad reputation for being a bit corny or 'sleep with my sister' in some places; a reputation it doesn't deserve. It's a truly wonderful genre. And I ain't no Southern hick; I was born in Northants, UK and brought up on folk and metal. I just know country music is legit and the world would be so much poorer- and sadder, without it.

Chloe's Cat its cuz when they listen to music, they judge it for what it is. They take every track as an individual art piece rather then letting prejudice get to them. Sadly, most people do not listen to music in that manner, but its really the only appropriate way to approach any kind of art

Country music, Blue Grass, and the Blues share a common ancestry, that of hard working folks in the south just trying to survive. Country/Blue Grass built on the foundation of Scots/Irish folk music, and the Blues foundation can be sourced the strong rhythmic beat of the Afro/Caribbean sound. When you smash those together with a little Dixieland Jazz thrown in and you get the beginnings of Rock-n-Roll.
@freespeechordeath7826
@freespeechordeath7826 5 жыл бұрын
Bluegrass is rooted in Appalachia which was settled by Scots-Irish hence predominance of old world string instruments Banjo, mandolin, and the fiddle. Blues rhythmic beat is about keeping time and its melancholic content is because wasn't much of shit to be happy about for poor blacks in the hot humid ass summer of the South. Country takes a lot of influence from Western Swing like Bob Wills. Where steel guitar in country is rooted. You left out the most vital genre to all the above and Rock and roll. Gospel music sung in the churches too many of to count here the the South. Where Elvis first sang and Jerry Lee Lewis learned the piano. Levon helm said it best country from nashville, blues from the Delta and Texas swing from Texas all met in Memphis.. The result was Sun studios and the beginnings of rock n roll

Family Tradition by Hank Jr. would be a good song to react to, especially when you know the history behind it. It really is sad song about his “family tradition” of drinking. His dad, Hank Williams Sr., who is one of the best country artists ever, died of alcoholism at age 29.
@biggreentruck4907
@biggreentruck4907 6 жыл бұрын
There were some pills involved with that alcoholism, as I recall. As I understand it, Hank Sr. had back problems, which had something to do with his drinking problems. A doctor prescribed some painkillers, too. That led to an OD on pills and booze. Speeders have been popular with traveling music acts, for decades. It's possible that Hank Sr. was using them, but I can't say with any degree of certainty.

Wish I was there right now-minus the gnats 😉 Did you know he wrote that song fishing either at a pond or lake. My memory is not the best, but I remember him saying that in an interview He also made fun of the groups sitting down trying to compose a song. He wrote another one driving his pickup. I think family tradition, but I could be mistaken. He got his daddy’s ability to write himself. Too bad his father didn’t live long enough to get his hundreds (maybe thousands) of songs he wrote himself produced.

This song is one of the best songs, from the best era in country music. To me, Hank Jr is an interesting character. I find a large percentage of his songs to be frankly garbage, but when he hits it out the ballpark he's untouchable. And he did a lot of hitting it out of the ball park in the late 70s and early 80s. To really understand these songs I think you need to be steeped in Hank Jr's life's story, his relationship with his father's legend, and what his dad meant/means to country music. Once you've got a grip on that, these songs get in your bones like nothing else can and transports you to a place of magic, whiskey, and sorrow. It's oddly sometimes very wonderful. And uniquely human.

One of the things that makes this song so special to older country music fans is th homage Hank jr. pays to his dad in this song. The songs he mentions, “your cheating heart” and “I’m so lonesome I could cry “ were huge hits for Hank sr.

The line, "don't you play I'm so lonesome I could cry, cause I get all balled up inside, is a reference to a song by his father, Hank Williams, the king of country music. He makes another reference to another of his fathers songs later. He's basically saying he gets very emotional when he hears his dads old songs.

I have to agree with one of the other commenters, I have listened to this stuff ever since I was a young kid and never really found it funny. That being said I absolutely love watching you guys react to country music and older country in general. I get such a laugh when yall just bust out laughing. I just found your channel last night 1/26/19 and I have watched you guys for about 5 hours straight. You have a new fan for sure. Love the honest reactions and your open mindedness to listen to music you have never experienced before. Always been a fan of many genres and feel sorry for those who miss out on good music because of preconceived notions.

I like how you did the Wikipedia prior to your Loretta Lynn reaction and I think it would be good to do that with these older country artists just to give you the idea of how big some of them really were and what they've accomplished. Hank Sr and Hank Jr still hold records that will never be touched

+Crystal Hill Ha ha ha!! I hear your point but it was only meant for a joke because the song title and lyrics are just mad funny!! I do like other "normal" so to say country artists like Loretta Lynn, Hank Senior. Buck Owens, Charlie Daniels Band, and Tammy Wynette. I'm still a bit new to classic country so there are many that I'm still unfamiliar with. Anyways it's cool to know that you're a white anti-racist person that listens to classic country. Because there are still some people that listen to classic country and they are closet racist. But as for me, sadly I'm use to racist people so I'm like whatever man when it comes to people like that.
