A long scratch to a table top is filled using a cyanoacrylate product. Thanks to Dan Erlewine at the Stuart MacDonald channel for demonstrating the technique on a drop fill repair. His video is here:
• Fixing a small chip in...
I adapted his technique to handle a large scratch repair. I have used this in the past on high-end pieces with wonderful results.
I hope you find this of value in your projects.

Handy technique. I love the idea of using scotch tape over a blade to raise the cutting height. Thanks for sharing your craft!

I saw an old guitar maker use a very similar technique, only he used straight up cyanoacrylate, and it worked just as well as your repair.

Yes, I assume any CA glue would probably work just as well...

Expensive stuff. I reckon you could use super glue to do the same thing so worth a try. I would probably run some masking tape down either side of the scratch to protect the good surface but then my hand isn't as steady as it used to be.

My hand isn't either. I consider the result to be "repair patina". LOL. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for another video. Hey, how do you like that Quincy compressor? Would you buy that same model again, is it sized just right for what you do? I'm considering that model but it is a substantial investment for me. Thanks, appreciate your time!

I bought the Quincy because of their reputation for quality. I passed on the Home Depot compressor as there were a lot of negative reviews on longevity, however they were much cheaper than the Quincy and I guess if you got a good one you would be way ahead. The Quincy works great so far. It's probably a bit bigger than I need, but should I get a sandblaster or other air-hog tool, it should be able to handle it. Make sure you are ready to move it standing up the entire time. I had mine loaded into my truck and it was quite a sight seeing the compressor, in it's crate, standing tall in my truck strapped down with every ratchet strap I had. It took two of us to get it off the truck and onto my hydraulic lift table and then into the garage. Without the table I probably would have needed 3 guys to get it off. It takes a 220v circuit, as you know and make sure you keep up with maintenance (oil changes and air filters). Good luck with your purchase.

Appreciate the reply, good info. As I get older I try to buy the best I can afford with any tool, it usually pays off with performance and less aggravation.

Just use superglue (cyanoacrylate) and baking soda - works the same
@LostMountainRestoration
@LostMountainRestoration 4 жыл бұрын
This is a CA glue, just more expensive (lol). In my experience, if you mix baking soda and super glue you get a very hard, very white substance. I have used it in repairs and certain fills, but not in a scratch repair -thanks for watching!

How about the burned spots? Guess that's another story?

If I remember correctly, those were some kind of stains under the finish. As I said in the introduction, this was a $30 table and all I was showing was the scratch repair. This was filmed right around the time I pretty much stopped furniture flips due to the depressed market in my area. As such, it was not a project I put much time into. The table was sold at a consignment store shortly after the repair was completed. Balancing time, effort and financial return is something I had to do to stay in business when I was flipping. Thanks for watching!

U gave me an idea. I have a dark deep scratch on my light colored Maple table. I think I can use some sandpaper folded & sand the dark deep scratch & then maybe use some glue & do what U did. Then I will try to use a razor to scrape the extra off & get some very fine wet?dry sandpaper & wet it & sand it as U did. maybe I can fix the beautiful Maple tabletop.

@@LostMountainRestoration do you think my idea will work? I was hoping to get your two cents on what I was thinking of trying.

It sounds like a plan. You'll need to get the color out of the scratch before you fill it. If it's just oxidization you can try Oxalic Acid, but if it's stained with furniture polish or the like, you may need to abrade it or at least use something sharp to try and scrape it out. Good luck!

Why wouldn't you just sand and fill the gouge with polyurethane? Why do people do all this work, this super glue, this scraping, remedy techniques, coloring, filling, when you might as well just refinish the damned thing? It's the same amount of time.
