I think the scene is more tragic if you consider Elros, Elrond’s twin brother. Remember Elros chose to be among men. And Elros became the first king of Numenor, the predecessor of Gondor. So seeing Isildur, a descendant of Elros, falling to the rings corruption, must have been a personal blow because technically, Isildur is his nephew.

@@joestarlol Thanks. It’s also the reason Elrond is so hesitant with Arwen choosing a mortal life. Personally I always thought even after thousands of years, Elrond still mourns Elros because he resents that Elros became a Man and left him alone. And considering that the Afterlife of Elves is different than the Afterlife of Men, he will NEVER see his brother or daughter again.

Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to another area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. People say Elrond didn't push in Isildur in because it would've started a war or because kinslaying is a grievous elven crime, but there are two more reasons: one, Isildur's a freaking good fighter and wouldn't have been so easily pushed. Two, getting the Ring violently makes you more susceptible to it. (Bilbo _not_ killing Gollum protected him from the Ring's influence.) Had Elrond killed Isildur to destroy the Ring...he wouldn't have destroyed the Ring. It would've claimed him, too.

@Håkon in the books, sauron engages gil-galad and elendil in a 2v1 duel, gil-galad and elendil are killed outright and sauron's physical body is ruined. Then isildur cuts the ring finger off sauron's hand and claims the ring. In the movie, isildur is getting wrecked by sauron and the picks up his father's broken sword and lands a lucky blow that cuts off several of sauron's fingers, including the one with the ring on it.

To all of the complaints that Elrond didn't give Isildur a good kick into the volcano, Isildur wasn't led all of the way to the cracks of doom and also Isildur was much more important than the movie leads you to believe. He and his dad led the few humans that weren't corrupted by Sauron in the second age, he single-handedly saved the white tree from Sauron twice: once in Numenor and once in Minas Ithil, and was one of the four main leaders of the last alliance. Killing him would have been a huge deal.

The biggest lesson people are missing about the story is that the ring can only be destroyed by someone who willingly does it WHICH IS NO ONE that is why Illuvatar interfered in the ending finally to put a stop to the whole ring drama, if Elrond had taken the ring by force he just wound have been another gollum. But the smug tone on Elrond voice painting men as bad guys who can't do anything right is unfair but in honesty ring would have corrupted Elrond too, either he knows this or he is ignorant of the fact which is unlikely because he is way too wise. So it is a little dishonest for Elrond to not present the bigger picture which is that the ring is a special kind of evil that nobody can destroy maybe give up like Bilbo did but no one has the strength to actually throw it into the fire unless it is god himself or Tom Bombabdil

@@maragathm thats absolutely right. This ring is such a pure evil that you cant commit another act of evil to destroy it. No amount of trickery will destroy something so fundamentally foul and powerful, you need to do it out of the goodness of your own heart, or allow the evil to destroy itself - which is ultimately what happened when Gollum fell into the lava after the Ring. Elrond was being unfair, but in his defence, as Gandalf said in The Two Towers, that someone would try to destroy such a thing of power would never occur to an elf or anyone as powerful. Yes, Elrond did convene the secret meeting of the fellowship to discuss plans to destroy the Ring, but it was probably Gandalf's idea and persuasion that led to it. The Elves, by their own nature, were incapable of destroying the Ring and so it would never have worked if he just kicked Isildur in or something. The Ring has a mind of its own, after all.

To those complaining about Elrond not doing anything. Elrond is a lieutenant for Gil-galad, the High King of Noldor. He was in no position of power to kick Isildur's ass. There are hundreds of thousands of Elves and Men surrounding the plains of Mordor. It would look fishy if Elrond threw the heir of the High King of Gondor & Arnor into the fire, thus creating a second war between the Elves and Numenorians/Dunedain/Human.

MJPK13 It wouldn't matter if he just "knocked him out" and cast the Ring of Fire into the flames. Isiuldur, no doubt, had already planned that the Ring would be an heirloom to his house. If Elrond had done what you just described it would still lead to war between both the Eldar and Men and bring an everlasting hatred between them. There was already hatred between the Dwarves and Elves due to the sack of Doriath...a hatred that lasted for over two ages. The same would have occurred at this point. In a way had Elrond forced the destruction of the Ring the non-stop war of Elves and Men and the divide it would cause would have achieved Sauron's purpose anyway in driving a wedge between all the free people of Middle Earth. It was a lose/lose situation. Call Elrond whatever you want but I can understand his desire to not bring further pain, grief and war to his own people by antagonizing Isiuldur and his kin.

Obvious you haven't read the books especially the Simillarion where the Elves and Dwarves held a grudge over the Simirals for two ages. It is a reoccuring theme in the LOTR that greed is a major cause of dissension among the races. There would have been war because the power of the Ring is such that there is no reasoning left. No matter what Elrond would have said Isiuldur would have taken his "knocking him out" as an offense and a plot of the Elves to undermine his kingdom. FYI Gondor wasn't doing well without a king. It was clearly stated that it was under serious decline. Whatever you seem adamant about your opinion I'm not going to try to change it any more.

@@zachmartin2957 The "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" episode in season 2 was partly a _Lord of the Rings_ parody/homage. In the climax where Pierce, Neil and the rest of the study group are really having it out, Pierce very dramatically declares "I was *there"* referring to the moment where Jeff carelessly created the nickname "Fat Neil", then there's a flashback with editing very similar to this one. Elrond reminds Gandalf that he blames Men for the survival of the Ring at 2:06 in this vid; he's a little more understated in the way he delivers the line "I was there", but I've always taken it as a very intentional reference 😊🧝‍♂ I'm slightly making stuff up when I say Pierce loves Elrond's mini-retelling, but he certainly agreed with his style enough to mimic it a little haha.

I much prefer history, true or feigned, with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers. Film adaptations of novels, particularly trilogies have no choice but to revise the narrative structure of the original story in order to weave a cinematic flow. It's the same reason they increased Arwen's profile so that the audience could see what Aragorn was fighting for

I haven’t read the books yet, but if that’s all that is it it’s not contradicted here. Maybe he tried before. And remember that he does succeed in the Return of the King. I never took Elrond as someone who lost faith in men, but rather someone who simply doesn’t see it on the horizon, and knows that while he believes they could, he’s not convinced they will rise up to the occasion. There is a difference between that and losing faith.

Honestly, Elrond's lack of faith in humanity is well justified. He led a counter assault against Mordor, lost thousands of his elf people, who became ghost zombies in a swamp, watched as a human man could have ended the ring but decided not to, and the same evil eventually came back to destroy the world - again. 1:53 - 1:59 "It is in men that we must place our hope." "Men? Men are weak." Such great symbolism is what I love most about Lord of the Rings. Indeed, humans are weak but can also be extremely strong. For instance, in this story, Isildur was a human but so were Boromir and Aragorn.

Boromir is Aragorns foil, they represent the duality of man. Where as Aragorn is noble and righteous almost to the point of being a Mary Sue, Boromir Is corruptible and flawed. It is what makes Boromirs fall and redemption so compelling, because even though he showed the power hungry corruptible side of men when he tried to take the ring from Frodo, he then showed the noble and self sacrificing side when he gave his life to protect Merrt and Pippin.

The ring cannot be destroyed by anyone just bringing it to mount doom. No one has the strength or will to cast it into the fire. That’s why Gollum attacking Frodo is so critical here. Otherwise Frodo would have just been another Isildur. You’ve brought the ring to the very place it was created, it’s strength is at its most powerful here aside from being on the hand of Sauron. Sauron’s will is stronger than yours. It always will be.

Also worth pointing out: Elrond didn't want to harm Isildur because he's family. The king of Arnor and Gondor are descended from King of Númenor, who trace their line to Elros, Elrond's twin brother. The two brothers being half elves faced the same choice as Arwen in that they eventually have to choose to live as man or elf. Elrond chose elf while his brother chose man. That's why Dunedain like Aragorn live unusually long lives - they still have some elf blood in them. It's also why Elrond acts as bit of a father figure to Aragorn, since he's the last surviving descendant of his brother's bloodline.

@@dlkdyscotShe technically isn’t. Gandalf is older than Arda itself. I say technically because Maia are fluid in their identity. Olorin, Gandalf the Grey, and Gandalf the White can be considered different people.

the most bad ass entry into rivendell is that of Boromir. Both the elves and dwarves have companions coming to the meeting. But notice how Boromir enters alone.

I don't think any living being would be able to toss the ring into the firepit of mount doom. And I think that is why Sauron did not guard mount dooms entrance, he knew that. After all, the only reason the ring was destroyed, was because Frodo and Gollum fought for it.

Technically, whether you are liberal or not (and I am to a good extent), in Tolkien's fantasy, "Men" refers to humans in general.

@@noorykorky5056 it’s a joke. In fact, in the vast majority of the usage of the word “men” it is referring to humans, but because of feminism, we get to mAke jokes like this, because the can’t grasp the obvious
