You get the sense that this very debate has been going on for years, that it’s a toxic never-ending cycle within this broken family. And yet the problem has one root: the dad. The brothers love and support each other unconditionally; Boromir makes no contribution to Denethor’s horrific treatment of Faramir. Boromir is the glue holding it all together, so it’s understandable that it snaps when he’s gone. Amazing writing.

First time seeing this scene! So much has been packed into these few minutes. - Denethor's partiality - Boromir and Faramir's brotherly bond - Boromir's motives of possessing the One Ring (saving people of Gondor as Denethor told him) - Boromir's failure to resist the One Ring, which breaks the Fellowship and sends Frodo onto his journey (also proving his father wrong- Boromir isn't strong enough) - Faramir's motives of possessing the One Ring (winning his father's approval) - Faramir's success of letting Frodo and the One Ring go (also proving his father wrong- Faramir isn't corrupted in the end)

in the books it's even worse: Faramir asks Frodo to hold the Ring just a moment, Frodo accept, Faramir takes the Ring a few seconds, laugh and give it back to Frodo, claiming he wanted to see if he could resist the temptation. I guess his father was truely oblivious to his qualities

When I first watched fellowship of the ring, I was very young and always thought to myself that Boromir should just chill out, doesn't he understand that the ring is evil. But as I grow older I realized that many, even the kindest and strong willed person will be tempted to use the ring if it means saving his people and his family from the ravages of war and the constant fear of the enemy. Just also goes to show how naive I was as a child haha

I also, love how you can see that EVEN BOROMIR hates the pressure and obsession his father has with the glory of Gondor. He rises to the occasion to become the hero of Gondor, but he still hates that his father has forced him into being something deep down, he is not. His sympathy and protection of Faramir is so admirable, what a good older brother. Faramir gets such a raw deal, it’s so sad. I’m glad that his brother at least stood up for him as much as he could.

Indeed. You get the sense that Boromir has been futilely defending Faramir to their dad all their lives. The books offer more explanations of Denethor’s dislike of Faramir; his mother died of illness shortly after he was born so Denethor blames her death on Faramir’s birth, and Faramir has also spent much time learning from Gandalf, whom Denethor distrusts and believe is plotting to overthrow him. Faramir is also more interested in books and music and simple things than being a warrior, which Denethor does not understand.

For Faramir, this moment was particularly gutting. Boromir was the only family he had that showed him any love, and this moment the last he would ever see of him, leaving Faramir to suffer the abuses of the Steward alone, with the lone show of love he'd ever see from his father being the last as his father's attempts to immolate the both of them, only ends with the Steward getting himself killed. But take heart my friends, for in the end, Faramir has a happy ending, marrying a good woman in Eowen of Rohan, and I gather, becoming a far greater father to his own children than his father ever was to him.

Scenes like these were absolutely integral to the movie’s story. Cut out, they removed so much needed exposition. Boromir was portrayed as antagonistic and duplicitous but these scenes show WHY he was so. With what we saw, Boromir was a sneaky and traitorous member of the Fellowship that only redeemed himself minutes before his death. We don’t see THIS Boromir: a man who protects and loves his little brother and who doesn’t want to challenge his domineering father. Like other commenters stated, as majestic and beautiful those scenery shots were, many of them could have been cut to a degree to add at least this short scene. It would have done much to show Boromir’s struggle and his humanity.

Depends on how you see it for theatrical Boromir. He brings up the points on why he should be the one having the Ring and why it should be brought to Gondor (talks about that it is his people who keep the enemy at bay). Even while trying to take away Frodo's Ring for the last time he is only asking for the power to defend this people, so it isn't that much of a corrupted selfish goal. He was also shown to be quite compassionate and understanding, especially of grief. However I do agree that this expands on him more, especially the relationship between him and Faramir. However the movies do show Boromir's humanity in the theatrical versions. These scenes do more an expansion of his character and as such are much better left for the extended editions. The scenery shots are quite important for place establishment, they are part of what makes Middle Earth movies into Middle Earth movies. It can help with immersion.

Boromir was simply a great man who was easily corrupted by the power of the ring due to his main desire in life which is to protect Gondor and its people. He was never a sneaky or traitorous person, just the easiest victim in the fellowship due to him being a man. Once the ring stops its hold on him he is free to be himself again. Faramir was one of the few characters that the ring was not able to corrupt. Denethor chose the wrong son to carry out this mission. Though in Denethor's fairness he had already been compromised by using the Palantir.

@@britpackdog4545 Denethor, Faramir, and Boromir are some of the characters who take the most damage from the book to film adaptation tbh. Denethor goes from a noble, valiant, and near ideal warrior steward whose constant battles with Sauron through the palantir eventually warp his mind and drive him into depression and madness to a power hungry idiot who hates one of his kids. Faramir goes from almost a king among men to fairly normal guy with a cooler big brother. Boromir mostly suffers from a loss of context. He still remains a warrior concerned for the fate of his kingdom but unlike in the books where he has an actual plan, i.e. destroy the ring to defeat Sauron and restore the kingdom via Aragorn, he instead just wants to take the ring and somehow use it to defeat Sauron. Boromir becomes the better sibling whereas in the books he's very much a lesser to Faramir. He is stronger than Faramir in terms of brawn and a better warrior but it's really Faramir and Denethor who together have held off Mordor's advances. Boromir is mostly just a great fighter and a good captain.

Some people who just saw the theatrical releases think he’s just a selfish ass who wanted the ring for himself when in reality he was just trying to protect his people and follow his fathers orders. He’s actually incredibly unselfish, he defends his brother in front of his father and his dying words were wanting to know if Merry and Pippin were safe while telling Aragorn he’s his king. I’m so glad Aragorn gave him words of peace before he passed because he was truly misunderstood and was the heart and soul of the Fellowship.

I felt that Boromir and Faramir’s relationship was portrayed as Faramir being bitter over Boromir being favoured by his father and resenting Boromir for this. Indeed. The crucial details of their relationship are in this scene. What makes it special is Faramir had every reason to resent Boromir, but never did. He adored Boromir more than anything and looked up to him and idolized him, and it went both ways. Boromir always knew Faramir was special in his own way and never shared their father’s contempt for Faramir. He took it upon himself to be Faramir’s protector all their lives. His death meant the loss of the only person who ever made Faramir feel safe.

Sure what we saw of Boromir in Fellowship was good, and the issues that existed between Denethor and Faramir were played out well enough in Return of the King, but this scene in Two Towers really showed the dysfunction that existed in the family; Denethor's favoritism toward Boromir and the love and bonds that the two brothers shared that we never saw was explored in depth here. I remember seeing return of the king way back in 2003 when it was bout to hit the theaters. And it was by far the best thing I have ever seen in my life. And not only that. Apparently I didn’t even know or had any idea that there where extended versions of the lord of the rings films until I got older. So like I said before. I didn’t even discover the extended versions or find out about them until many years later

The bit that's easy to forget with Boromir is that he, like many others, are initially tempted to the ring out of a desire to do good. Very few people in the story genuinely understanding how supernaturally tempting the ring is, and that with enough time it will conquer absolutely anyone. I think in the books Gandalf says that even Sauron himself would've been incapable of bringing hurt to the ring (not of course that it would ever have been in his interest to do so, just as a hypothetical to demonstrate how overwhelming the allure of the ring is).

To be honest, this is an under rated thing of this scene. Seeing him smile and be positive and "normal" really adds so much depth to his character. And it would have added a lot of depth later when we see him all depressed and mad because of Boromir's death.

Nice to see Denethor before he succumbs to grief and despair. His hatred of Faramir and glorification of Boromir are dominant, but he's popular, genial, and pretty sharp. ("It's dangerous, I know. Ever the Ring will seek to corrupt the hearts of lesser men.")

I really love the way the movies in particular portray Denethor. In the book there wasn't as much focus on what kind of a father he was, or even what Boromir thought about him as a father. In the movies we get to see how both the brothers talk about him, and it reminds me a lot of how I and my sisters talk about my dad. Especially not wanting to say his name or "Dad" like how Faramir says "he's here" instead of "Father" I just feel uncomfortable referring to him as my father. That might have just been a random choice of words but it just makes me like this scene even more, I can relate a lot. That's why Faramir is one of my favorite characters, book and movie. I relate to him so much.

This scene adds so much to Boromir's death. He left a place where he was hailed as a hero, but perhaps also the lone hope of a country trapped in the shadow of Mordor. And if that evil is unleashed in full, Gondor will receive its wrath first. The weight of the burden he carries is tremendous from that alone. Add to that a doting father of whom he is both wary and weary, and a brother whom he loves and has to leave with that same father. From all of that he comes to Rivendell, a stranger, and from a country that represents man more than any other. And remember, "Men are weak." They allowed the Enemy to live on through that weakness. Nobody trusts them, therefore nobody trusts Boromir. And as it turns out, he is weak indeed. The Ring plays upon his despair. Tempts him to bring the quest to ruin in its earliest days. And perhaps the one person in whom he might find hope, Aragorn, spurns him and Gondor entirely. And then his weakness causes his greatest failure, as he tries to take the Ring for himself. But then he sees his error in his moment of greatest failure, and rather than succumbing to that failure, he rises and defends the Fellowship, defends the friends of the one he tried to harm, and friends of his own whom he had grown close to during the journey. He takes three arrows for these friends, and then, as he lay dying, Aragorn honors him and gives him hope that perhaps Gondor might be saved after all. And whether Boromir realized it or not before he died, Aragorn's resolve to become that man, to become the King of Gondor, starts with honoring a man who showed the weakness he feared, and yet overcame it in the end. Boromir is, in a sense, a repentant version of Isildor. And in that, Boromir dies not in dishonor, but as the hero we saw in Faramir's memories.

I've never seen this before and my heart broke over this. I always thought Boromir was the eldest faultless son archetype, the golden son, basking in his father's light and outshining Faramir, but he wasn't. He loved Faramir and despised his father for not seeing Faramir's qualities.

I think this scene should have been in the theatrical release, it gives Boromir, Faramir and Denethor a lot of needed backstory. 0:48 I have a miniature from games workshop inspired by this exact frame and it's amazingly well done. The similarity with the real actor is amazing.

While I love this scene and how it expands on both Boromir and Faramir, I do really dislike how they portray Denethor II as this petty, lowly and despicable man, as opposed to how he is in the books: a noble and intelligent man, ruling a Kingdom of men with expertise, who only became more bitter from the death of his wife, Sauron's looming threat, the hopelessness of any struggle, his usage of Gondor's Palantir to predict Sauron's movements (and he is noble and strong enough to resist corruption from the Palantir), Boromir's death and the loss of Osgiliath, the capital of Gondor. He only fell to madness after a very long siege (in which he organised the defenses of Minas Tirith expertly, ordered the Warning Beacons to be lit and sent the women, children and elderly to safety long before the siege) and the apparently mortal wounds Faramir sustained. He did not hate Faramir, either, only became angry at him for letting Frodo (and the Ring) go, and the loss of Boromir. Denethor II, like Boromir, represents how even great men can fail, Boromir from temptation, Denethor from despair, in contrast to the pure evil of Sauron and the search for power of Saruman. While the movie portrayal did Boromir (my favourite character) justice, Denethor's portrayal was worse than it could have been.

Denethor didn't resist corruption via the Palantir. What predictions of Sauron's movements Denethor thought he was achieving through it were only Sauron's own manipulations of Denethor. Denethor also made Gandalf unwelcome in Gondor from day one of his stewardship. How noble and intelligent can a man really be if he can't see the nobility and wisdom present in Gandalf?

By watching these scenes later, you are wrought with the depth and the agony of Aragorn's final words. Upon Boromir's departure "Be at peace, son of Gondor." Boromir was sentenced to restlessness, he was a weary yet valiant soul as men are. In life he struggled to do his best, to protect his people to do what he believed was right. Yet in the end he realizes that he was a failure, he did not see, he tried to take the ring from Frodo. He realizes his own weakness, and so seeks redemption at the cost of his life. It is a perfect analogy for men Damned if you do, damned if you don't, for some of us the choices do not matter. Our fates are sealed, and there is only one rest for us, one peace. Death I yearn for the day inwhich I can lay and choke on this foul world's air as I struggle for existence. Gasping my last, dying for a purpose I pray in the name of my Master. To look up at someone, someone who was truly chosen, like Aragorn was. Truly chosen and meant for more in this life, and I can say. 'I would have followed you my brother, I would have gone two miles... if you had asked me to go one. And I would give you my coat if you asked for my cloak as well...' Then finally these dastardly lights can leave my eyes and I will be drained away like my blood from the struggles of the mortal world. I pray someone looks over me and says, 'Be at peace, son of the gentiles..."
