Actually I believe that battlecry is a mockery of Sauron. Sauron is the one who originally caused men to fear death leading to the fall of Numenor 100-200 years prior. They are charging into what they know is certain death in defiance of Sauron.

It's a statement of religious defiance. Sauron WANTS men to fear death, that's his primary method of corrupting them. The faithful Rohirrim know there is no need to fear death, as it means returning to Illuvatar/God, and the threat of it is to be met in glorious, fearless, defiant combat. For death and glory.

Ehh… You should be fair to the Hobbit movies. They didn't have the time to properly render the CGI, nor did they have the time to actually polish the scripts, etc. It takes time to make practical effects on a large scale, and unfortunately the studio didn't give Peter Jackson time for pre-production, which the LOTR films had over a year of.

~ i dont like how stupid they depicted some important things, like archers holding the full drown bow to shoot in volleys... . Its quite hard and tiresome to hold shots like this, the elfs/elbs did the same, the enemy has all the time to raise the shields when done so, but if arches would shoot when ready the sky would be full of arrows all the time. Every time they hold fire and wait for a command to release them in this trilogy... . Its plain stupid, but people love it. + how stupid the catapults on this castle are placed, behind the walls would make more sense, but otherwhise the enemy couldnt shoot them down so easy for the cinema. + every wall in this trilogy has no kind of machicolations nor proper crenels. Its like these walls where build only to look good, and not to actually repell an attack on it... . And infront of a castle are normally ditches digged by the defenders, so enemy towers cant just roll straight to the walls. A simple spikewall or two, with ditches digged would have stopped these horsemen. And every single besieging force builds that in the first few hours, otherwhise enemys can just walk into like shown here. So yes, for a fictional universe, inhabitatet by idiots, its a good trilogy and great scenes.

@@wodrapixel2818 to be fair, in history there have been many dumb decisions made by generals and rulers regarding their armies and fortresses. and yes this is a movie things need to be a bit more theatrical than in real life. also i think the book itself has some explanation to certain things, i think in the book it's mentioned the horses of the rohirim aren't regular horses like real ones, they are much stronger and faster since they are of a breed that isn't real but exists in the LOTR world.

ah, to be fair, even if you dont account for the books, he had two days of travel to come up with a few ideas as of what to do. in military thinking, there isnt even that much choice. heavy cavalry works in tight formations (as the rohirim kinda are and do) he basically has two options, going for flank-chipping, or broadening his formation and meeting the enemys on as large a front as possible. considering the comparable staturesque weakness of an orc against an armed horsemen, the fact that they are riding out on a hailmarry and expect to meet their doom anyways, and the fact that the orcs have not seen fit to construct defensive works such as ditches, he choose the second option. in the books btw, mordor HAD screening troops in deffensive works (ditches) to catch the rohirim and prevent them from making it to the pelenor fields, but a certain gahn buri gahn lead them through a secret forest-passage so they could circumvent these screening orcs. he also briefed theoden and eomer on the positions on the orcs, and it is his intelligence, that lets the rohirim arrive in battle-ready formation, as they know beforehand what they want to do. entire subplot has been cut from the movie, though, since it would take a lot of time to do it justice i dont know if this whole explenation ruins the scene for you, but for me it just shows that tolkien really cared about the world he wrote, he had proper military tactics implemented in most of the battles.

Fear of death was a central tenant of Morgoth's corruption, and so is carried within all of his corrupted creatures. Dragons, Balrogs, Trolls, and Orcs are all ultimately cowards, by design. They all fear death and, absent a force forcing them to face it, will flee it. Break the line and an orc army will scatter, as they did upon the plains before Gondor.

imagine you're a gondor soldier fighting on the walls of minas tirith. You look outside the wall and realize there are still thousands of orcs, it's over for you. You move away from the wall and go closer to the citadel to barricade yourself with the others as it is certain death you're facing . Suddenly you hear a horn blow away in the fields, you don't know either these are allies or more orcs coming to finish you off as you don't have many allies, you are lost, afraid, hopeless, desperate. The orcs have begin to break your door down, and suddenly you hear it lightly through all the screaming and yelling around you, a faint "death" coming from the distance, you hear it three times and everytime is it getting louder, you know that's a human voice. You run and peak through a window to see your ancient ally charging down a hill in thousands and chanting death. You see them charging with no fear even through arrows as death means nothing to them at this point. It's either them or the orcs. after a few seconds you hear it, the loud armor crash of the horses trampling hundreds of orcs. Hope is relinquished, humanity is saved and gondor is in debt to rohan once more.

Repost: Lore-wise, chanting "death" had a double meaning. Yes, they were charging towards seemingly certain death. But also in the Tolkien universe, death is actually a good thing. You go to a place of eternal happiness and bliss and even the elves don't know what happens to you. Morgoth and Sauron both worked to corrupt death's meaning however and make men fear it. This is actually how Sauron destroyed Numenor, making men fear death. So when Theodan and company chant "DEATH!" at the top of their lungs, they're actually defying Sauron/Morgoth and demonstrating faith to Eä. So it is a war chant, but it's also supposed to be symbolic of mankind's defiance of evil. And when you face death.. sometimes you win. And facing it is sometimes your only chance of life.

So realistic in terms of historical battle tactics too. Most movies have terrible battle scenes but somehow this 20 year old movie absolutely not only nailed it cinematically but also realistically. The way the orc leader shouts commands to form ranks, telling pikemen to get to the front. They also form an accurate formation, digging their pikes into the ground pointing the spear upwards towards the horses. And we actually get to see a cavalry charge. Normally in movies the two lines meet and it instantly turns into movie style 1v1s. So much detail was put into these movies in many ways.

In some shots during the charge before the impact, you can see in the background where there are very few horses-For those shots they took a bunch of extras and concentrated in front of the camera, to camouflage the CGI Rohirrim around them. At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before: Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains. Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and the darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.

At last he halted once again. The City was now nearer. A smell of burning was in the air and a very shadow of death. The horses were uneasy. But the king sat upon Snowmane, motionless, gazing upon the agony of Minas Tirith, as if stricken suddenly by anguish, or by dread. He seemed to shrink down, cowed by age. Merry himself felt as if a great weight of horror and doubt had settled on him. His heart beat slowly. Time seemed poised in uncertainty. They were too late! Too late was worse than never! Perhaps Théoden would quail, bow his old head, turn, slink away to hide in the hills. Then suddenly Merry felt it at last, beyond doubt: a change. Wind was in his face! Light was glimmering. Far, far away, in the South the clouds could be dimly seen as remote grey shapes, rolling up, drifting: morning lay beyond them. But at that same moment there was a flash, as if lightning had sprung from the earth beneath the City. For a searing second it stood dazzling far off in black and white, its topmost tower like a glittering needle: and then as the darkness closed again there came rolling over the fields a great boom. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new tire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young.

One of my favourite parts of this is how they accelerate. Around 2:50 you can see the horses at the front speeding up and breaking away. The courage it shows of the Rohirrim not just riding towards battle, but racing towards it without any hesitation. Lord of the Rings in my book was always less about good and evil, and more about courage and fear. This masterpiece hasn't aged a day.

No doubt, good vs evil is more of an overarching concept than a theme from itself, but the choices that men do is definetely among one of the most important things Tolkien wanted to display, and how men that do evil acts are usually corrupted by fear, usually its the fear of death that leads to men's downfall in Tolkien's mythology. We can see that was at led to the downfall of the greatest kingdom of men Numenor, but at the other aspect, conquering this fear leads to amazing accomplishments like the House of Hador did in the battles of the first age, and how Theoden and the Rohan riders did in this battle of the Pelennor Fields.

I've always loved Theoden's arc in these movies, it's very subtle. A King, with no heir and no hope for a legacy. He is the last of his line. His forefathers all carry with them great achievements. What does he have? What magnificent thing has he done? His Kingdom had nearly been on the brink of defeat. Then, despite Gondor having done nothing for him. He goes to their aid. He rallies his people. Taking them into a battle he knows they have very little chance to win, but one they must fight. Even if it costs them everything they have. He and his people will not perish meekly, they WILL be remembered. In essence, Theoden proves himself as a King. That he rallied his people against something insurmountable. Even though he dies here, he dies knowing that he did everything he could, and he will not feel ashamed in the midst of his forefathers.

Especially when you contrast him with his Gondorian counterpart: Denethor. Both are old men, having seen many tragedies in their lives. Both have lost their sons. Both are under attack by their greatest enemy. Both want to leave a good legacy for their ancestors. Both succumbed to despair. Theoden, though, rose up. He fulfilled his oaths. He acted in such a way as to be honored by all. He rallied his nation and people, leading them to victory. When he died, he was universally mourned. Denethor, by contrast, figuratively (and literally) fell. He disgraced his line in his despair, failed his people, and were it not for Aragorn and Theoden’s timely arrivals, would have seen his nation and people destroyed. His only consolation was knowing that he didn’t murder his own son before his own death.

@@Mode-Selektor That is speculation from the OP, but it is very likely Theoden, who was born and educated in Minas Tirith felt immense rage seeing Mundburg burn and monsters at the gate. What is fact:- Thengel, disgusted by his fat, wasteful father Fengel moved to Minas Tirith and met Theoden's mother there, only returning when his father died. Theoden was born in Minas Tirith as was Theodwyn (Eomer and Eowyn's mother). In his court Sindarin (the educated language in Gondor) was spoken, and not all the Rohirrim liked it. After the Pelennor Fields, Theoden lays in state in a chamber of Minas Tirith, where later Imrahil offers Eomer to lay the old king permanently in a Gondorian tomb alongside the Kings and Stewards, as he was born in Gondor. Eomer refuses the gracious offer and Theoden is returned to Rohan where he is buried at the end of the second line of mounds. The tragedy of Theoden is that he never managed to set foot in Minas Tirith again, dying in front of its gates under his fallen horse.

Yep. Yet, to be honest, it is this big fella at 3.33 that I would fear. Not only is he big, rides in the first line clad in chainmail...but his beard is partially grey ! Always fear a fighter who lives long enough to turn grey. Either he has seen terrible things (and lived through it all) to turn grey early, or he is doing that for a long time. Either way, simply bad news for anyone on the receiving end :-)

"Ride for ruin and the worlds ending" The Rohirrim weren't just looking over an enormous army in the Pelennor fields, they were looking at the engine that was designed to crush and subjugate all of Middle Earth and mankind with it. They were looking at, in a sense, the end of the world. And they charged into it at a sprinters pace. A hopeless cause shouldn't ever be met with hopelessness, it should be met with defiance. Those orcs can break the body, but only hopelessness can break the soul and true death only comes when both body and soul are destroyed. Even if Mordor won, the men of the west would never have lost

You could also say the end of the world was the loss of everything as they knew it for after saurons defeat the dwarves retreated to their mountain homes, the elves departed middle earth etc everything that was magical and wondrous left middle earth. So in a sense it came true but in a happy way, they all left middle earth alive and weren't taken from it by death, destruction and subjugation

"Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rail, against the dying of the light!" And Theoden worded the Rohirrim attitude towards war most laconically and clearly: "If it is to be our end, we will make of it SUCH an end as to be worthy of remembering!"

The way Theoden rides along tapping spears with his sword is inspiring. It's what great leaders do. Peter Jackson appreciates military history and it shows in how he incorporated historically real armor and inspired stories from history much like Tolkien himself (a WW1 veteran) did writing this. Tolkien knew full well the horrors of war along with the bright moments of gallantry it produces.

Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was even before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail of his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first Éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken.

I miss that in the movie. In the book, they sing during the first charge. In the book, it is Éomer who cries "Death!
