Sam's speech in Osgiliath, at the end of the Two Towers. (HD Blu-ray)
Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy.
Sam: How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.
Sam: Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding on to, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for.

Something I realized only recently about Lotr is that throughout the series there was no means of Frodo and Sam knowing that Gandalf came back, or that Merry and Pippin were saved, or if Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli survived the ambush back in Fellowship. Frodo and Sam were effectively completely alone. And it was their sheer belief in "good in this world" that kept them fighting.

Tolkien modeled the character of Sam from the English soldiers he fought alongside in World War 1. They were often low ranking privates on the front lines, ripped from their humble lives and professions and thrust into some of the most brutal combat imaginable. From those men, who had every reason to feel afraid and cowardly, Tolkien witnessed the most exceptional bravery and strength of spirit.

And instead of being angry, Sam understands. And he gives him hope. Something to hang onto. Even though Frodo felt too small to understand why. And because of this speech Frodo gets back up and keeps going And goes on to destroy the ring.

J.r.r Tolkien has lost both of his parents as a child, fought in WW1 and saw terrifying things, and been a witness also to WW2 as a human living in that time. Lotr was published 1954. By this time Tolkien has seen and experienced so much of the darkness, sadness, fear, rage and chaos of this world. He suffered pain as deep as one can imagine, with few close ones to support him. He did not run away from this pain, nor supressed it. He dealt with every bit of it through a tough journey. He had many chances to go back, but he held on to something. Somehow- he managed to remember that there's still good in this world and that it's worth fighting for. And he sure won the fight: Tolkien was happily married, a super-great father and the author of one of the best stories humanity has known, a story who still encourages the suffering to keep on fighting for the good.

I think one of the most traumatic events in his live was when he realized that basically all of his best friends died in WWI. He lost his parents, but found strenght in them in his youth. They all volunteered together but Tolkien and one other were the only ones to return to England. And the one who survived was never the same again and barely talked to Tolkien, if I remember correctly. Imagine that... he lost his family twice, yet he managed to live a fullfilled life in the end.

If anyone’s interested in the excerpt from the Two Towers this speech was based on, it’s posted below. In the book, this exchange between Frodo and Sam took place on the stairs of Cirith Ungul prior to their entry into Shelob’s Lair with Gollum. Gollum was absent during the exchange, likely scouting ahead and corresponding with Her to lay his trap. One thing I will say, as a book Nerd I enjoy the speech in the book better…but the screenwriters for the film did such a fantastic job adopting these long excerpts of dialogue into the movie. It’s like they took the essentials lines from the book and simplified it so the masses could understand but it didn’t lack any of the depth. At no point does the dialogue in the movie seem contrived, rather it’s totally natural and faithful to the source material. Howard Shore’s soundtrack certainly helps as well. Anyway, here’s the quote from the book: “‘I don’t like anything here at all,’ said Frodo, ‘step or stone, breath or bone. Earth, air and water all seem accursed. But so our path is laid.’ ‘Yes, that’s so,’ said Sam. ‘And we shouldn’t be here at all, if we’d known more about it before we started. But I suppose it’s often that way. The brave things in the old tales and songs, Mr. Frodo: adventures, as I used to call them. I used to think that they were things the wonderful folk of the stories went out and looked for, because they wanted them, because they were exciting and life was a bit dull, a kind of a sport, as you might say. But that’s not the way of it with the tales that really mattered, or the ones that stay in the mind. Folk seem to have been just landed in them, usually - their paths were laid that way, as you put it. But I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back, only they didn’t. And if they had, we shouldn’t know, because they’d have been forgotten. We hear about those as just went on - and not all to a good end, mind you; at least not to what folk inside a story and not outside it call a good end. You know, coming home, and finding things all right, though not quite the same - like old Mr. Bilbo. But those aren’t always the best tales to hear, though they may be the best tales to get landed in! I wonder what sort of a tale we’ve fallen into?’ ‘I wonder,’ said Frodo. ‘But I don’t know. And that’s the way of a real tale. Take any one that you’re fond of. You may know, or guess, what kind of a tale it is, happy-ending or sad-ending, but the people in it don’t know. And you don’t want them to.’ ‘No, sir, of course not. Beren now, he never thought he was going to get that Silmaril from the Iron Crown in Thangorodrim, and yet he did, and that was a worse place and a blacker danger than ours. But that’s a long tale, of course, and goes on past the happiness and into grief and beyond it - and the Silmaril went on and came to Eärendil. And why, sir, I never thought of that before! We’ve got - you’ve got some of the light of it in that star-glass that the Lady gave you! Why, to think of it, we’re in the same tale still! It’s going on. Don’t the great tales never end?’ ‘No, they never end as tales,’ said Frodo. ‘But the people in them come, and go when their part’s ended. Our part will end later - or sooner.’ ‘And then we can have some rest and some sleep,’ said Sam. He laughed grimly. ‘And I mean just that, Mr. Frodo. I mean plain ordinary rest, and sleep, and waking up to a morning’s work in the garden. I’m afraid that’s all I’m hoping for all the time. All the big important plans are not for my sort. Still, I wonder if we shall ever be put into songs or tales. We’re in one, of course; but I mean: put into words, you know, told by the fireside, or read out of a great big book with red and black letters, years and years afterwards. And people will say: “Let’s hear about Frodo and the Ring!” And they’ll say: “Yes, that’s one of my favourite stories. Frodo was very brave, wasn’t he, dad?” “Yes, my boy, the famousest of the hobbits, and that’s saying a lot.”’ ‘It’s saying a lot too much,’ said Frodo, and he laughed, a long clear laugh from his heart. Such a sound had not been heard in those places since Sauron came to Middle-earth. To Sam suddenly it seemed as if all the stones were listening and the tall rocks leaning over them. But Frodo did not heed them; he laughed again. ‘Why, Sam,’ he said, ‘to hear you somehow makes me as merry as if the story was already written. But you’ve left out one of the chief characters: Samwise the stouthearted. “I want to hear more about Sam, dad. Why didn’t they put in more of his talk, dad? That’s what I like, it makes me laugh. And Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam, would he, dad?”’ ‘Now, Mr. Frodo,’ said Sam, ‘you shouldn’t make fun. I was serious.’ ‘So was I,’ said Frodo, ‘and so I am. We’re going on a bit too fast. You and I, Sam, are still stuck in the worst places of the story, and it is all too likely that some will say at this point: “Shut the book now, dad; we don’t want to read any more.”’ ‘Maybe,’ said Sam, ‘but I wouldn’t be one to say that.”

+Dragon Ball Super-Notice everything Theoden had suffered through. He was poisoned and corrupted by Saruman, used as a frail puppet for Saruman's own evil. His own son died fighting the good fight while he was in that corrupted state and he never had a chance to say goodbye. He regretted never letting Eowlyn know she wasn't just his niece, she was all but his daughter. He had the responsibility for thousands of his people's lives, people that were nearly almost killed and slaughtered. The army barely survived the night, so many lives were lost defending Helm's Deep, but they kept going until help arrived. Theodon didn't even know, much less believe that help truly was coming for them at all, but he held out to defend his people. So when he screams victory, this is Theodon finally winning a hard won war. He could also see that there were still good people in this world. I think that was part of his motivation to help Gondor, even though Gondor never aided them. In Two Towers, he sneered at the idea of Gondor helping them, but in Return of the King, he came to the city's aid when they needed it the most. Because he knew what it was like to think everything was lost and to have someone come even when all hope was lost. Because he knew that Gondor needed to see there were still good people in the world.

Those are the words of humanity, centuries before than. That have said, time and time again. "Theres still good to fight for." Sam is the unsung hero of this trilogy. He was the one that swore to never leave Frodo's side and he didn't. When Frodo told him to turn back in Fellowship, told Sam this was something he had to do alone, Sam refused to let Frodo go without him. Sam was the one who hunted and cooked for them. He didn't trust Smeagle and while he didn't understand Frodo's decision with letting Smeagle stay with him, he trusted Frodo to let Smeagle stay. His priority the whole journey even over his own safety was Frodo. Sam saved Frodo from Shebog. The light of the star he held. . .I feel that's even more poignant that Sam held it. He also held on to a light to never give up. He was willing to continue the journey and destroy the Ring when he thought Frodo had died. He came back to Frodo even when Frodo told him to leave. That Frodo didn't trust him. And when the Ring was destroyed, even after Frodo betrayed him for the Ring, Sam still didn't give up on Frodo and made sure he was pulled to safety. Frodo never would've gotten as far as he did to Mt. Doom if Sam wasn't by his side. Heck, Sam carried him to Mt. Doom to make sure it was done. And Sam never got the same recognition and praise that Frodo did. Nor did he ever ask for it. Sam is not just a hero, he's definitely the other protagonist in this story.

Hitsugaya Toshiro one is great second were more exploring the lore and introduce a lot of things the third one was a bit disappointing because of smaug's death and the entire movie was an action flick if they want to make the movies different with the book..they could at least change the plot where smaug, alliance, and orcs clashing each other at one single battle

Actually it's interesting you say this. They spend a full year just writing, making props, and building sets. While on The Hobbit, they pretty much just made stuff up as they went along, they didn't have time to prepare. You should watch the behind the scenes, its amazing how much work was put into the movies. And Sir Ian McKellen was right there with his copy of The Hobbit and giving them suggestions the whole time. And to be honest, The Hobbit wasn't as good as The Lord of the Rings anyway. Now I love all the books, very very much, but The Hobbit was great while Lord of the Rings was a masterpiece. Although, I do wish the orcs in LOTR spoke their language instead of English. I thought that was one thing that really set The Hobbit off. They hired Benedict Cumberbach to do the voices of the Dark Language as well as smaug.

This hits home. I’m an aspiring writer currently on his way to getting an English degree, and this scene so perfectly encapsulates exactly why I love fiction so much. The ability for characters in situations you have never been in going through things you have never gone through to guide you and give you hope, because it reminds you that, in the end, “a new day will come” and the sun *will* shine while simultaneously inspiring you to continue on and not turn back. Incredible speech. My favorite of the whole trilogy, which is saying something.

How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened. But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something. ‘I don’t like anything here at all,’ said Frodo, ‘step or stone, breath or bone. You and I, Sam, are still stuck in the worst places of the story, and it is all too likely that some will say at this point: “Shut the book now, dad; we don’t want to read any more.”’ ‘Maybe,’ said Sam, ‘but I wouldn’t be one to say that.

@@paulares292 The movies are a great adaptation of the books into films, but they’re sort of an action adaptation of it, if you know what I mean? There is that sense of epicness in the books too but it really only builds to that in RoTK. The book focuses much more on the journey of the hobbits, and it has a much more merry tone to it at the start. The movies have that epic tone from the beginning, an entire quarter of Fotr (the journey to bree) is cut out from the movies. I understand why they had to do it, but the format of films and some aspects of commercial appeal made it so that a lot of important parts of the book were cut out. Almost all of the song and poetry is gone. Now I think Christopher Tolkien was kind of exaggerating, the movies are still great as movies and they capture far more of the spirit of the book than anyone could expect, but there are certainly still aspects missing. The Book is still better in my opinion, but the movies are fantastic in their own right. Another thing that’s missing in the movies is the clear inspiration tolkien took from his own catholic beliefs. This is especially apparent in the council of elrond. The movies completely removes all reference to divine providence. In the books, the fellowship all meet there coincidentally in a mysterious way that makes it clear there are higher powers at play. In the movie, Elrond calls them all there. I understand why they didn’t do this in the films, there just wasn’t time, but it is pretty important to the story of the book.

@@FerreusSoul there are many people around the world who can't take the vaccine for health reasons (including one I know) being dehumanised, smeared as "anti-vaxxers" sacked, losing their homes and facing the prospect of seeing their children go hungry, all because others want to "feel safe". And there are many people supporting this segregation. I doubt very much that these mandates will create a safer world or that Tolkien himself would agree. I suspect this kind of government overreach and this segregation will lead to civil war if not eventually genocide. History is about to repeat itself. I watch this video in the hopes that none of this comes to pass and we can stop this evil before it sets hold. For the peace and happiness of all.

@@cookiebilbo don’t be fooled, this mandatory vaccination is just the first step to government oppression, it’s not about lowering the curve, it’s about getting people in line. There is already censorship being thrown onto people who think differently than the media wants, book burnings and statues being torn down. The dark days ahead have not even started. It will get worse.

Can't help but wonder if Tolkien knew a guy like Samwise back in the trenches of WW1.

That was the comment I was looking for because I feel so sad for the world (tonight especially for Germany) and I even bursted out into tears a few hours ago. But after watching this I feel better because this scene comforts me so so much! Thank you JRR Tolkien! And Peter Jackson and all the actors!

What heartless bastards thumbs-downed this video? This speech is incredibly powerful, whether or not you enjoy LOTR. It's meant to help those who feel they are at the end of the line. For those struggling in life with depression, anxiety, or any personal demons, "even darkness passes." Keep up the good fight.

I like how Gollum ponders on that last bit; like there's still something left of Smeagol in there. But alas, Gollum overtook him, to his fiery end.

It's been exhausting, and the future's looking pretty bleak. For the past few weeks, my friends had said they saw me look tired and sad but honestly I felt nothing. Every smile that came out feels fake and disgusting. Then I came upon this, and for the first time in weeks, I felt something, I felt the tears rolled down. I had a good cry and decided that I would always remember, whenever I feel like when I couldn't do anything anymore. I would always say to myself that there is some good in this world, and it's more than just worth fighting for.

I’m trying to find a way of saying how much I loved what you just said but the English language is just not that descriptive. All I can say for encouragement is “I KNOW you can make it through.” There is so much I want to say to push you but the simple fact that you yourself are already dedicated to seeing the better in this world is well enough! Godspeed you magnificent bastard (no harm intended lol)

There are few scenes in film history that are more relevant to today than this. As this world gets more chaotic, more disturbing and more evil, it is all too easy to believe the lie that life can never be better. But we have to understand the truth that we are so often blind to: There is good in the world worth fighting for. Hiding away and watching the world burn while we stay in our little shells is not the answer. It's time we started fighting for all we hold dear.

It's so easy to get distracted by the bad stuff that is blared out across the media, but the truth is that the world is getting better.Crime rates are going down, standards of living are rising. The darkness of human savagery is passing, and a new day *is* coming. Each day the world gets that much brighter.
