Two things can bend on the clutch pedal. The lever extension can bend out of line with the master cylinder. That's potentially fixable in situ and is worth trying first. The second is that the 'bridge' that runs over the brake pedal can twist and that is a pedal box out job. I had a very low bite point in my '88 Excel (the red one) and a combination of bleeding the clutch and adjusting the clevis (which is now at its limit) made it much more useable. I had several ignition failures, all but one due to bad connections. The ignition is electronic and may not spark if the battery is too low. The AB14 'amplifier' box contains little more than a fairly generic 'ignitor' module. Those modules are actually very reliable and the only thing to watch out for is overheating where the heat transfer compound has dried out. A faulty rev limited can be a problem and is worth disconnecting just for testing. Whilst I had the carbs off for rebuild, I pulled the disributor and remade the connections bentween the reluctance pickup and the loom to the AB14. I also cleaned and tightened all of the spade connections and my car has been faultless since. I've found the best starting procedure to be enrichment full on (it's not a choke), no throttle and no priming. Let it run for about 30 seconds before trying the throttle. Once it will rev cleanly, enrichener off.
