I take my Lotus for its certificate of roadworthiness test... But what exactly happens?

Congratulations. Amazing work. I'm looking forward to seeing the Excel driving to Sicily. I think it's great that you're pitting it on the road and using it.

Well done! As a TVR owner I can appreciate the MOT trials and tribulations!

Thanks mate. Which model of TVR do you have?

Your MOT was very good. So helpful for safety, well done for going again and again as you have taken a Lotus from death to ALIVE. Plus your leaking pipes were really very important. Congrats as i too will be following you completely with my Lotus, but here no MOT is needed so will get it checked by a engineer mate.

I am in two minds about it Neil. The problem with the MoT is that you can't really legally test things properly and for old cars that is a problem. Also, an MoT does not prove a car is safe, it can only prove that it is unsafe. Anyway, it is done now 🙂

Congratulations getting the Lotus to pass the MOT ! I was smiling (ironically) a bit when seeing you going 4 times to get it passed. But I can guarantee you that Luxembourg is not different from Germany or Switzerland regarding MOT. I imported & registered a few english cars here and even they passed the British MOT, they failed here. For instance, if braided brake lines are considered superior, they are not accepted here unless the manufacturer has used them on this car/model. I'm also considering buying an Excel in the UK and then converting it to LHD here.

Thanks for your feedback John. Regarding the brake lines, I have learnt a bit about them over here. I think they have to be stamped with that specific SAE number before they accept them. Of course, they did not tell me this! That will be some project if you convert a car to LHD. They are rare and expensive the LHD versions. Good luck and let me know if you need any advice. I also lived in Baden, Switzerland for many years, cheers, Neil.

You have done very well The Police were unkind to say the least

In fairness, the police were just doing their job. They were ok with me. It was the MoT centre that were nasty.

I feel for you. "Upgrades" from standard spec are a potential minefield. Not sure I would have gone down a removing washers route though.
@neildonaldsonlotusexcelresto3 ай бұрын
In fairness Dave, there were no washers when I dismantled it. Cheers, N.

Top stuff, congratulations. It's been quite the journey and sounds like like that will continue one way or another! Like many, I find MOTs a worry as it's quite difficult to check for everything. Thankfully my 'new' Excel passed last month without any real concerns, but a test centre next door to a Lotus specialist probably helps.

Thanks mate. Which year was your Excel built?
@Gonch6663 ай бұрын
1990, so a few years to go until it is MOT exempt, if that's still a thing in 2030!@@neildonaldsonlotusexcelresto

@neildonaldsonlotusexcelresto , I'm sure I replied a couple of weeks ago but it's not here. My Excel is a 1990, so unfortunately I've got a few years before it's MOT exempt - If that is still a thing in 6 years time!

Nuts should be the shorter T-type, which is 0.5" tall, rather than the full height P-type, which is 0.59".
