Quite a few newspapers had tip lines, not just for reporting crime, but for consumer problems and so on. The Detroit Free Press had one called Action Line.

Just so people know in 2024 in California a DUI ends up costing at a minimum $20,000 Plus the loss of your licence for a year minimum.

Drinking and driving laws have become a lot more strict in California since this episode--and, that is a good thing. Uber and Lyft have also kept the roads much safer now.

jokerswildio, I’d have to lookup the stats, but I suspect there has been a huge drop in alcohol related deaths and accidents. I know there has been a huge drop in highway accidents and deaths over the last couple of decades.

Now, texting while driving is killing thousands of people, but soon, cars will all drive themselves home, so the drunk texter will be safe. What a World.

Texting needs to be treated as harshly as drinking and driving.

I seem to remember when I was a kid seeing a news bit on a drunk driving course like the one in this show. They had the people drink the booze through a straw. Claimed that it got the participants up to the limit faster.

Typical 70s. They’re not wearing seat belts on those test course drives. I didn’t check out the other scenes when they’re driving, but I doubt they are wearing them then either. I’m just old enough to remember when cars didn’t have seat belts. My dad actually had them installed post-production in a1960s model car we owned. They were just lap belts in the front seats. This was decades before child seats. My little sister and I wore these body harnesses that then attached to seat restraints in the back seats, but there were no belts for older children or adults in the rear of the car.

Excellent point. One thing, though. This was from November 1981.

Back in the early '80s cars primarily just had lap belts, not three-point belts like later cars did. For reference see the episode with Samaritan where the hitchhiker Lou picks up refers to his wearing his seatbelt, but it's clearly not a three-point belt.

DUI is so much more shameful and costly than today.

The Law is too lax on Drunk drivers. Or Stoned ones or those who Speed. They should be charged with Attempted Manslaughter. And Aged Persons should be tested Often. What was always great about Lou Grant writers is that they showed the humour in a situation and then showed the Seriousness. It was like they said here is the one side but On The Other Hand there is..... As for the Informer, a rather narrow view from Rossi that only those who Live in a property would be there - what about visitors, workmen? Could have saved himself a lot of legwork & time!

Never had to worry about Rozzi driving drunk. All he drank was orange soda (but he probably has diabetes now)
