I am a child of the 60's and I grew up with 5 sisters (!). I remember watching each of them practice each new dance craze for hours at a time. It seemed like a new dance came out almost weekly. As for a band form the 60's that you haven't covered yet, I don't recall seeing a reaction to Peter, Paul and Mary who were huge in the folk scene then. A few of their songs that come to mind are "Blowing the Wind", "500 Miles", "If I had a Hammer" and one your kids would enjoy "Puff The Magic Dragon".

Archie Bell's "Here I Go Again" (from the early 1970s) is a great track which is sadly neglected. Later hits like "Soul City Walk", "I Could Dance All Night" and "Disco Showdown" (all made for Phildelphia records) still sound pretty good.

"Shotgun" was Jr. Walker's breakthrough record in 1965. The label was Soul ( along with Tamla, part of the Motown labels). "Shotgun" peaked @ #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit #1 for 4 weeks on the R&B chart. In 1969, Jr. Walker & the All-Stars had their 2nd Top 10 hit "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love For Me)" that also peaked @ #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also peaked @ #1 for 4 weeks on the R&B chart. Jr Walker is the saxophonist on Foreigner's great "Urgent."

Junior Walker & The All Stars Profile: American R&B and soul outfit, & one of the Motown signature acts in the 1960's. Originally "The Rhythm Rockers," they became "The All Stars", & in 1961 they were recommended to Harvey Fuqua who signed them to his label Harvey (2). When Fuqua's labels were taken over by Motown's Berry Gordy, Jr. Walker & The All Stars became members of the Motown Records, recording for their Soul label in 1964. While 1965 saw the release of their signature hit "Shotgun," they remained active on the charts through to 1972, disbanding in 1979.

Back in the mid 90's I had just dealt with a crabby customer at work and called the local radio station request line and requested this song to get me dancing and vent some frustration. They actually played the song and my voice requesting it. Shortly thereafter the regional supervisor called up and asked if everything was going alright. She was listening to the same radio station and recognized my voice. Wanted to know if I needed any time off. We had a good laugh. Thanks for the fun memory.

I'm so happy. Amber has a new move. Go ahead, girl. You don't have these moves anymore because break dancing, aerobics, and hip-hop high jack the need to be creative. The older dances were a natural progression of freestyle based on the music. Anyone could do them. Most of us learned from shows like American Bandstand, Soul Train, Shindig, Solid Gold, Hullabaloo, etc. As the trends and music changed, so did the dance moves. Also, Foreigner has a song called URGENT that features Jr. Walker on the solo. It is a blast !! To follow up on this song, you want WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO WIN YOUR LOVE. Finally, Billy Preston has a fantastic instrumental hit titled OUTTA SPACE. You guys should really take a minute and fill your ears with this searing blast of energy. No words. Just pure distilled soul to move your feet and pivot your backbone to. Enjoy

"Shotgun" was one of the top hits of 1965. I agree with the others who say you should listen to Jr. Walker and the All-Stars on the 1969 hit, "What Does It Take to Win Your Love." Jr. Walker and the All-Stars were one of the great Motown groups. But there's another '60s band that was known for its instrumental music that was just dripping with soul and funk. Check out "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the M. G.'s. Booker T. and the M. G.'s were also the "house band" for Stax Records, another label that was home for mostly black artists, including some timeless acts like Isaac Hayes (of "Theme from 'Shaft'," which, if you haven't already done that, you've missed out on an iconic piece of music.)

My family would spend the summer camping in the 60'. We would camp, but the place had a pool, a stable to ride horses. For the teens, they would have a dance at nights. The one song I remember playing over and over, was My Guy, by Mary Wells.

This is a fond memory. My aunt used to collect 45s. My grandfather had the beloved stereo cabinet record player. Motown & the era songs would blast on Saturday/Sunday throughout the day while cleaning & grandma was cooking. Similar to Bill Cosby show, our grandkids would make up dances & lip sync in backyard when had barbecue while my parents, aunts & uncles w/ grandparents judge our routines. It also was part of the music when went roller skating on 'colored Wednesday' (only day for blacks to skate). Listen on radio when went to mall or go to out to eat.

Those were Go Go Girls who danced on the platforms. "Do the jerk, baby!" A dance they were doing on the floor. I remember learning the Tighten Up dance after the song came out called Tighten Up. A whole new dance when it came out. I was in the 6th grade 😅 Great reaction to Shotgun! I have always loved it since I was a kid.

I have this on a 45 & at the VERY beginning of the song, you'll hear a shotgun! Anyway, "25 Miles" is another GREAT Jr Walker song. Just went to a "Happy Together" concert that featured The Cowsills (The Rain, the Park, & Other Things", "Hair", "We Can Fly", "Indian Lake"; The Vogues, Classic IV, Gary Puckett, LIttle Anthony (still out there touring), He's from the VERY early 60's. The concert ended with The Turtles who's lead singer is the guy who sang for The Archies. Love the The Turtles. Check them out.

The girls in those “boxes” are the Go-go dancers. In those days everybody learned each of the most popular dances. The 50s and 60s both had tons of new dances throughout the decades. These days all everybody is doing is the “shuffle dances”. Might as well just say “ we don’t know any dances.

The girls in the boxes are Go-Go dancers. It was popular in music shows to have girls dancing in "boxes" or stages lol. I used to love going to a club that had dance "boxes" any girl could go up and dance in. It was so much fun. And you didn't have to dance with anybody lol My favorite part.

The lyrics specifically refer to dances the Jerk and the Twine and obliquely to the "Mashed Potato". The rest of the lyrics hark back to the hit "Hi-Heel Sneakers" from the previous year (1964). Hardly great poetry but what a brilliant dance record. Bought the 45 back in '65 and still have it 🤩

There was a short-lived phenomenon in the sixties known as a "Go-Go Club". It was the precursor of both Discos and Strip Bars. They would often have "Go-Go Girls" dancing in boxes or cages (usually to protect the dancers). There were a lot of Go-Go things for women.
