Low Waste and Easy Backpacking Couscous Recipe

An awesome recipe for making delicious couscous while backpacking. This is easy and low waste. This recipe uses ingredients that are bought in bulk in advance so that there is less packaging waste. Try it in advance and then portion it out for use on the trail. It is easy to make quickly on a backpacking stove and provides a nice warm and nutritious meal.
The ingredients are:
-Far East Original Couscous (www.amazon.com...)
-Harmony House Vegetable Soup Mix (www.amazon.com...)
-Mountain House Cooked Ground Beef (www.amazon.com...)
-Spices - you should have these around your house although you may want a small Nalgene bottle for carrying them (www.amazon.com...)

Thanks for a recipe to try, maybe a little chicken or beef bouillon might spice it up a bit more while the vegetables are rehydrating; it’ll give the water the salty it needs before it gets the beef & couscous.

I never thought couscous could be so good and so versatile! Kind of like rice but way better, lighter and less fuel hungry!

Nice video thanks. I'm surprised about the ground beef we use Thrive Life and theirs is good for a year once opened. Great for Backpacking meals though! I do a lot of meals in a jar and I'm planning to scale some down into Mylar bags for hiking type meals.

I'll have to look into that brand as it is handy stuff to have around when doing a lot of trips. It is tough trying to cut down on packaging. I have moved into just doing the dehydrated meals as the prep ahead of time is just too much otherwise.

i guess we can also add a bit of a stock cube for added fats and flavoring

Cold soak the vegs earlier in jar, then prepare the rest of the meal, save some fuel.

Great suggestion. I don't usually carry a sealable container that I could cold soak in. I could get them going a bit earlier and then cook them later. For most of my trips I am only doing a couple days at most so I am not too constrained on fuel. I think this whole meal could probably be cold soaked but not sure it would taste as good. I think there is something about a hot meal while backpacking.
