Honestly my favorite thing about Terra is just how poor of a match her powers are for her. Generally, elemental powers in media tend to carry with them certain personality traits. Pyrokinetics are generally passionate and sometimes hot-tempered and air manipulators tend to be free-spirited drifters, for example. Earth powers tend to carry with them more grounded personalities- steady, stubborn, immovable. But Terra got moved by everything. You could even hazard a guess that the reason she couldn't control her powers at first was because of this conflict.

A very interesting point, I never thought of Terra in that light before. However, once I think about it perhaps there is a bit of a connection between Terra and the typical personalities associated with earth, this being stubbornness, while you are right that Terra got controlled by everyone to a point, Terra was still stubborn about her outlook on herself. Terra refused to accept that she had the capacity to be appreciated, even when Terra is given appreciation she is still holding on to that self-doubt. Terra refused to let herself be appreciated,

I totally agree with you and I think the reason I feel the way I do about her- as she is a chapter prior to Aftershock2 that I fundamentally disagreed with but understood her struggles to connect with people and trust myself around them- is because of her lack of a solid footing. It’s character like that that I find myself far more connected to. The best example I could give (and probably the most extreme) would be Toph and Terra. One who I found myself connecting to almost instantly and another that I liked disliking.

@@wanderingoryx3710 ehhhh. In the comics she was basically an irredeemable bitch to everyone and slept with Deathstroke for no reason. Sure you could consider her storyline more "adult" there but underage sex and being a complete psycho doesn't really work for a kid's show. I'm glad they took her character in a different direction in the show.

Apparently, the reason we didn't get more of Terra as a member of the Titans is down to the fact that they didn't have the budget to bring her voice actress on board as a member of the main cast, even temporarily. They could essentially only afford to use her in a set number of episodes.

To be fair, the source material was really trashy in that regard. The previous video has many good comments on the matter discussing how as opposed to being two romantic subplots competing with each other (never mind that Terra is 15 and cannot consent to a 50 year old man, even if she 'wants' it) in the show the conflict is between the stability of her friendship and the stability of Deathstroke.

The butterfly hair clip is a really solid visual representation of her story arc. She's truly like a butterfly. She starts of as an unsure caterpillar, after she comes back and betrays the Titans she's in a cacoon. Her metamorphosis isn't over yet. Then in the end after she's betrayed them she saves them. Because they truly were the closest thing they were to family and the only people who accepted her. She's fully a butterfly. Unfortunately her spreading her wings is her end... until season 5
@emilythedragon

It also seems to reference the Butterfly effect, that small and seemingly unimpactful decisions can have far-reaching consequences. One slight misunderstanding was the difference between her being a member of their group versus a villain.

I agree. Terra is a good character because she has different layers to her personality. When people say they don’t like her it actually makes perfect sense. You aren’t supposed to particularly like her, she’s neither good nor bad. I think she is supposed to confuse you because she is confused herself. The best characters usually lie in a gray area rather than being one dimensional. Great video as always, and I’m looking forward to the next part.

Honestly, I feel that having Terra interact with the other Titans would be something that would push her arc above the Raven and Robin arcs. Especially her interaction with Raven. Based on Raven's reaction when fighting her, completely flipping about breaking her trust I think actually seeing the emotional weight behind it would make things much better, because we weren't really shown any time where Raven put any exceptional trust in Terra. Their episode I feel was the base that needed another scene to fill out the relationship. My idea to expand on that is as follows: After Titan Rising, (where we saw Raven get a mental flash of the struggle Terra was having) we have a scene where Raven is meditating, then we see Terra enter, finding out that Raven invited her to meditate with her as a sign that she wanted a good relationship with Terra. As they get started, Raven states that she sensed a sort of emotional turmoil with her, and though she isn't one to pry for secrets, she asks if Terra wants to talk about it. Terra looks away and declines stating discomfort and wanting privacy. Raven is OK with this and won't secretly or forcibly take what Terra likes to keep to herself, but decides to make the first move to show her trust, by stating something she has not yet told anyone that her family means she should be the cause of great evil, but she wants to prevent this by being a hero. (nothing past that to stop spoilers) Terra shaken by this, asks if she is scared she already made too many mistakes to stop it. Raven responds that she can only hope, that by trusting others and working for good, she can conquer her past. A few seconds of silence, then Terra states softly that she can't believe Raven would trust her that much. Raven replies she is working on it, and they stop talking, with Terra looking unsure of herself, before fading out. This would show us that not only have other team members put their trust in Terra with meaningful dialogue, but that she is conflicted and unsure of herself and how to trust even with control of her powers, rather than the confidence we saw at the end of Titan Rising that conflicted with everything else we see of her personality. It would add emotional weight, and strengthen the character, instead of contributing to the perception we get of someone who can't that constantly changes her mind

I like what you wrote. I love the relationship between Terra and Raven. They look very different and yet they are very similar. I think they can be very good friends. They had developed a good team spirit. If there is ever a Season 6, I would love to see their friendship grow and see Raven help her master his powers. She seemed to trust Terra a lot. Raven admitted that she accepts her more easily than BB, which is intriguing for a character like Raven. I would love to see Terra back on the team like a blended family.
@TherealRNOwwfpooh
@TherealRNOwwfpooh Жыл бұрын
@@Fulb3rt Terra was not meant to be a permanent member of the team. Her creation was that of a plot device. She was developed strictly to exist as Slade's deceptive moll (and in source comics, she was also his jail bait lover on top of that), cruelly betray the Titans with no remorse whatsoever for doing so (the traitorous harpy having regrets for her actions could've been seen as show-exclusive had there not already been a good Terra clone brought into the source comics in the '90s after Terra's death despite the character's original creators -- creative geniuses Marv Wolfman & George Perez [the duo were also responsible for the comic book boom period during the 1980's that _The New Teen Titans_ had, thanks to the team being DC's answer to the _Uncanny X-Men_ from rival comic studio Marvel, since Wolfman/Perez desperately wanted to get the Titans out of being stigmatized as "a Junior Justice League"], who initially crafted Terra as a deliberate subversion of Kitty "Shadowcat" Pryde just with an individual name, separate backstory & different superpower -- wanting her to stay dead forever) & then get justifiably killed off. But, just like how the comic themselves had brought the geomancer back in the form of Terra II (even if the blatant Terra fanboys [who landed jobs at DC & had thus, given life to Terra II] writing the '90s comics were outright ignoring the explicit wishes of Terra's original creator, Marv Wolfman, thereby resulting in him distancing himself from the comic world for a substantial amount of time thereafter), the cartoon also brought Terra back from the proverbial grave (Incidentally, Marv Wolfman was onboard the show too, in a writer-consultant dual role capacity, humorously enough). In her last-ever appearance, the animated Terra was given Terra II's second origin (the good Terra clone known as Terra II is hard to categorize because readers were given three separate distinct character origins for her existence in the comics, however before she could carve out her own identity as a heroic genetic lookalike wholly independent of her irredeemably traitorous original counterpart, Terra II found herself brutally slain by an insane Black Adam when he viciously punched straight through her torso mid-flight, with his bloodied hand sticking out of her back as she lay dead on his arm with her frightened eyes wide open & her mouth forever etched in a permanent scream). Terra II's 2nd origin -- and thus, the likely origin of the animated Terra following her demise in season 2 -- is that she is the original Terra revived with her past memories either wiped (as was the case for Terra II's initial comic origin, considering how this iteration of Terra had debuted harboring false memories which subsequently caused her to honestly believe that she was really from the Elseworld the displaced Team Titans came from, only for this illusion to be shattered once the Team Titans went back to their own time & Time Trapper -- a notorious time traveling villain who had implanted false memories into two of his victims to make them bind to his will -- was swiftly arrested, however instead of disappearing alongside the rest of the Team Titans as expected, both Terra II & the other victim of Time Trapper's brainwashing had suspiciously stayed behind, thus affirming that Terra II was somehow strangely from the present time even though Terra as a character was supposed to be stone cold dead never to return [This is what Marv Wolfman, Terra's original creator, had wanted after 1984's _The Judas Contract_ closed the book on Terra's story arc, reaffirming that those who gave life to Terra II were deliberately going against the direct wishes of Terra's true creator], which led to Terra II having an existential emotional breakdown due to being self-aware of her predecessor's prior history with the Titans, an identity crisis problem which was further exacerbated when she realized she was feeling genuine attraction for the angst-ridden changeling who obviously wanted nothing to do with her due to not being able to face her since she was a near-enough exact duplicate of the original [to be fair, Terra II had a sense of noble heroism that her unfeeling predecessor didn't] & he was still hurt over the betrayal, so to calm her own anxieties, Terra II cautiously visited the grave site of the first Terra only to discover the stone statue bust of her predecessor was nowhere to be seen [it might've gotten knocked over just out of frame], the dedication placard that Beast Boy had more than likely engraved seemed to be missing [it could've easily been turned upside down], the ground surrounding the grave had been dug up & the deceased's casket was not only propped wide open, but the body of the original Terra that should've been in the casket was gone [Either grave robbers took the corpse or Terra II was, indeed, the original Terra given a new lease on life, which caused Terra II to scream in utter horror at that prospect]) or repressed (Upon a re-watch of the "Things Change" final episode of the 2003-2006 _Teen Titans_ animated series, you can pick up on subtle hints that suggest that the schoolgirl that uncannily looks exactly like Terra does remember who she once was in her previous life, which means she genuinely is Terra & she's merely acting like she doesn't know who or what Beast Boy's talking about whilst also intentionally suppressing her earth manipulation powers). The idea of a revived animated Terra deliberately repressing who she is whilst suppressing her superpowers certainly appeared to have some valid credibility to it when a lone Slade-Bot showed up to haunt Beast Boy with the unfortunate revelation that "Maybe she doesn't want to remember" before the shapeshifter destroys Deathstroke's robotic minion, because whereas Beast Boy himself is probably remembering the good times before Terra joined Slade, the revived Terra can only recall the bad stuff she did as Slade's apprentice, so it would be in the best interest of both of them for Beast Boy to let her go, because as the girl who used to be Terra would reiterate to him herself, "The girl you want me to be is just a memory. Things change, Beast Boy. You're the Teen Titan, not me. I'm just a girl who's late for her geology test & I haven't studied." Unfortunately for those fans seeking a noble iteration of Terra, when comic book Terra had officially returned -- Atlee as the presumed 3rd Terra does not count on the grounds that she wasn't even supposed to really be Terra at all when first conceived, but was hastily handed the moniker instead due to pressure imposed onto the comics by Editor-in-Chief Dan Didio, who tried to forcibly reintroduce classic characters by slapping their traits & specific superpowers onto new, fresh faces -- in the original comic timeline (the one predating the rightfully lambasted New 52 unwanted hard reset of the entire DC Universe), the illegitimate Markovian princess was a reanimated corpse shown wearing a Black Lantern ring. Zombie Terra ended getting mauled by lion Beast Boy after failing to seduce him (she was quite literally torn in half, which was shown on-panel by way of shadowy silhouette visuals) & upon pulling herself back together, she was temporarily encased in a stone statue mold (an homage referencing the animated series' 2nd season ending) courtesy of the very same earth manipulation powers she shared with her half brother Geo-Force, with her winding up a horrifying mess of rotten flesh, broken bones, and collapsed rubble once the _Blackest Night_ saga had ended before dissipating into a cloud of dust, for as Holy Scripture dictates, "You are dust and unto dust you shall return" (of course, Raven's paternal demonic bloodline [which can be legitimately traced back to Lucifier Morningstar, the "Fallen Angel" & historically Biblical Satan] would undoubtedly serve as conclusively irrefutable proof that all three afterlife locations -- Heaven, Purgatory aka Limbo & some kind of interfaith Netherworld as a combination of conventional Christian+Muslim Hell as well as The Underworld of Ancient Greece -- all canonically exist within the wider DC multi-verse across all continuities).

In the comics his humor was to hide the pain he went through losing his parents. Sometimes people use it as a coping mechanism. The other thing is people who have been through a lot of hardship know how humor can really help other people. I knew someone who would put on a mask like that, who had their own issues, but didn’t what to worry anyone about themselves and also simultaneously help others. Beast Boy is like that which does in my opinion make him a very complex character.

The episodes are structured that way because of how TV production worked during the time. It was back when studios producing the shows made a big chunk of their money by syndicating their shows. A lot of times, the studio actually sold shows to the networks at cost or even at a loss, meaning that they made no money from having the show aired by the network. The way the studios made money was from merchandise sales and selling the rerun rights of the shows to local stations. And local stations preferred shows that they could air in any order. That's why most older animated shows had no long story arcs. It made it easier to sell the shows into syndication. It was during the run of shows like Justice League, Teen Titans, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Young Justice, etc. that made the studios change their mind about story arcs and continuity. Now a lot of shows have season long story arcs thanks to streaming.

I know that what ultimately matters is the end product and little nods in the independent episodes would be better for the arc of the season. You talk about Aftershock part I feeling rushed. I agree in parts with you. It is just that the creators only had allowed money to hire Terra's voice actress for really few episodes. They wanted a little more focus on her in other episodes, but could not because of purely financial constraints. They really had to rush some things in a way that they did not want to. Ultimately, it does not damage the season really that much in my opinion, overall a great season

TheZeldaExperienceWithin Yes, I agree. It must be kept in mind, tough, that Teen Titans is ultimately a very episodic show that became more and more ambitious, mature and complex during its development, but it was not this way from the very start. The creators said that at first they wanted to do a fairly simple and entertaining. They tought that JLU, for exemple, great as it is, was too mature for younger kids. When Teen Titans became an instant hit, they tought: "well, why explore deeper, darker themes?" Seasons 2-5 showed this growth, tough the second half of first season was already a huge improvement. Episodes like Nevermore, Masks and Apprentice really stand-out as all- time great Teen Titans episodes.

When it is serious it carries little to no weight into the next episodes. Rewatch Season 1 of Young Justice knowing Robin knows Megan and everyone else is lying. If you go back and rewatch it every time a lie is made Robin is in the background and his eyes narrow but he doesn't say anything till the end of the season. That's good writing, that's good animation. Young Justice is filled with small moments like this you only get through repeated rewatching. It makes you realize if YOU had paid more attention there was hints through out that you yourself missed and it leads to credence why the others in the show did as well. When someone says "I knew", you can rewatch the series and find the moment they figured it out. It's in the background and unsaid. The YJ series is filled with quick glances, head nods, eye narrowing, and head tilts in the backgrounds. Teen Titans was about pie to the face.

I really didn't like this show, I was 15-17 (I'm to lazy to look it up) when it came out. I watched Batman The Animated Series since I was like 5 and this felt like such a childish step backwards that by the time I was 16 I found this unwatchable. Comically in the actual DC comic series Young Justice has this comedic tone while the actual Titans comic series is dark and serious like the Young Justice/Batman TAS cartoons. So this show has little in resemblance to the Comic Series. I also find Young Justice a return to Batman The Animated Series style of adult story telling and less a continuation of Teen Titans..... Was also pissed when I found out Young Justice was CANCELED for Teen Titans Go but that's been corrected.

How seriously you take your retrospective on a show that many of us watched ad children and teens goes a long way to reinforce the idea that we form real relationships to these characters and their stories. Taking the writing and direction of a "kids show" as seriously now as we did back then makes it easier to explore the emotional depth of these shows, and allows us to see how the subtle nuances of their stories and themes may have impacted us. This series has earned my subscription. Keep up the good work. I'll be working my way through your catalog while I wait for the next part.

Season Two had my favorite season arc. Terra was one of my favorite characters (and still is). When I watched this show as a 12-15 year-old, I could relate to her inability to control her powers. When I was a young teenager, I was trying to figure out who I was and what my strengths were, but kept feeling dragged down by my weaknesses. I think that's why Terra stood out to me so much at that age. From a critical standpoint though, I wish Terra was at least mentioned by the other Titans between the episodes she appeared in. The continuity in Season Two was a bit choppy since Terra was only mentioned when she appeared, like you mentioned.

Terra's arc is pretty great. I always really loved her character. If I'm not mistaken the next season has an episode in it about Robin that's on a whole other level though. Probably one of the most iconic episodes of the series really.

I think I mentioned this before in one of your Teen Titans videos, but the reasoning for episode 11 is because they wanted to have the audiance to have breather, taking it easy from all the emotion and the seriousness that happened in Episode 10. And after episode 11, they can have the audiance to get ready for the upcoming 2 parter episodes. The show is a mixture of both comedy and action. Which is something that is balanced really well in Teen Titans. Imagine if Avatar: The Last Airbender barley had any humor and was like 100% serious, would you even watch it? Even as a kid? :/

Which is all fine and good, but I think the point Lowart is pointing out is that these episodes perhaps go too far in the opposite direction. Where the tone whiplash is so severe between episodes that it somewhat nullifies what came before it, especially considering that Terra isn't mentioned in pretty much any episode that doesn't focus on her. It makes it feel like the Titans don't really care about her unless she's with them, which is a weird route to take when all it would take is a brief aside or conversation here or there to keep the flow up. Funny that you mention Avatar, because that series works so well because even in the "filler" episodes there is almost always something happening with auxiliary characters, or at least acknowledgement of prior events that let us know that yes, these situations are still on the characters minds despite the conflict of the episode happening around them. Teen Titans...doesn't really do that a lot.

They mention Terra occasionally in later seasons. In Season 4 one of the things that Beast Boy's evil doppelganger uses to incite him is bad mouthing Terra for what she did which shows he still thinks about her and how it still effects him. This is why the last episode Things Change is so important because it allows him to finally let her go.

Good catch. Reminds me of when the Justice League fought the Justice Lord clones in Justice League Unlimited's Season 1 finale. Lots of bringing up past history and flinging it in the heroes faces. A bit of a cliche but one I really enjoy in the few times it's done. Shame that it took all the way for Season 4 for some Terra acknowledgement to happen though, and in a big season finale rather than weaved throughout in some of the filler episodes. When characterization or status quo changes are almost completely ignored from "filler" episodes, then you question whether the "filler" material matters or even takes place in the same universe. Heck, the light-hearted episodes even have a different intro song. Maybe that's the secret! That's kind of what Lowart is saying: those moments should've occurred throughout the series, not just in regards to Terra, but also Slade and maybe some other events that really effect the characters. Lowart states that not enough of that occurs in this show and on that note I have to agree. Although you are correct that yes, SOME acknowledgement exists, which is good. I just wish a little more was done, is all. Like Avatar, which very rarely had true "filler" episodes and the few episodes that WERE filler were universally panned by the fanbase ("Great Divide", "Avatar Day", "Painted Lady", etc.)

my favorite part from season 2 was the fight between treera and raven ,i loved terras line:come on raven what hurt the most,that i tricked you?,that i whipped out you'r team?,that everyone liked me better then you,or is it that deep down in side you really believed i was you'r friend? to me this part stood out the most , in my opinion raven from the show to the comic and even in the original titans comics ,is one of the most powerful characters ,i think in the moment if raven wasn't mad and had really self control she could have won she could have killed terra and then slade maybe ,well it is a kids cartoon slade did die but up to the episode were it was ravens birthday i dont think slade was died ,but raven could have still sent her away like to another world universe or reality ,like i said if raven wasn't mad she would have won the fight,the same with the other as well they were all holding back ,even in after shock part to they in my opinion were still holding back some

I've been rewatching Teen Titans from the beginning after catching chunks of it as a kid (but barely remembering anything from back then), and following along with this series after each milestone I reach and I have to say the Terra arc is just so... tragic, and easily the most compelling story arc so far. Especially after reading about how it eventually concludes, which, without spoiling anything, seems to be very bittersweet (imo the worst kind of sweet..) "Betrayal" is particularly heartbreaking - its a powerful illustration of how choices can be made that change things forever for the worse, and how quickly relationships and reality can irreversibly come apart. It's powerful stuff, especially for a kids' show. The moment you mentioned where Terra is overcome by reflections of herself is such a powerful, heart wrenching image. It's made even more tragic by that fact that if Beast Boy would only have forgiven her in that moment and accepted her again, it would likely have been enough to break her from Slade's grasp. And their relationship would have presumably continued to flourish. Thinking about what could have been is always the saddest for me... But it's also understandable that he reacted the way he did in that moment - he was feeling hurt and was quite literally betrayed. The brilliance of it is that it isn't all one way or another - her character isn't wholly good or bad, and in a way she chose everything that happened to her. But did she deserve it? After all, she was ravaged by insecurity, which makes the whole thing even sadder. The fact that her arc is inspiring so much thoughtful analysis in the comments and in this video is a testament to how well developed, relatable, and even real the character is. I do agree that more Terra-centric episodes in between the major story ones setting up her relationship with Raven or the other titans a bit more would have helped. But still, what a fantastic piece of television. Anyway, I didn't expect to get this emotionally invested in a show I used to enjoy as as kid, so this was quite the pleasant surprise, and I'm looking forward to more Titans and more of these videos :)

I absolutely LOVE the Terra arc here. Yeah, it was a watered down kid version but thematically it helped me as a person grow a lot. Being abused or manipulated can change you. I love Beast-Boy's interaction with Terra. Beat-Boy fights with acceptance in his own way. He tries to get others attention and struggles with his own class clown-ness and feeling of under performance in the group. When he meets Terra, it's the most natural thing in the world for him to fall for her because she's a sort of kindred spirit for him. Added to that, having someone who likes him back, romantically, gives him that attention and affirmation he craves so much. That's why he fights Slade so hard. Terra complete's his faults and strengths. She's the outlet for his insecurity, because she gives him affection. But she (or at least his relationship with her) is also the demonstrator of his loyalty, bravery, and courage.

I totally agree with you. Personally, I found Terra to be one of the best characters in the entire series. What I think is cool about her arc is that she learns that her own actions reflect on what kind of person she is. In the beginning, she starts off as a girl that came from nowhere. She has no home and practically nothing to take care of herself. When she met the Teen Titans, they allowed her to stay. Only problem was the fact that she couldn’t control her powers. Her reason ultimately for betraying them was the fact that Slade was the one that helped her. Or really that was just her excuse. What she didn’t realize was the fact that the Titans could have helped her themselves but instead chose working with an evil person. When Beast Boy finally confronts her, he makes a really strong point that her choices were what made her become a bad person. That made her realize that she can make good choices if she wanted to and it even made sense that she could attack Slade still in her condition because what Slade forgot was that he helped her control her powers enabling her to overthrow him. Terra is a great character because you learn that your actions decide what kind of person you become. It’s also a shame that it really doesn’t make any sense that she somehow comes back in the last episode and with no explanation either. This is also pretty critical but I prefer Terra over Slade as a character. Then again while I like Slade’s personality, he’s never developed as a character so it just makes me question who actually is he? I mean he’s mysterious but why does he care about causing so much destruction in the city and why is he so intent on defeating Robin? This really isn’t explained. I used to think that Slade was a great character until I realized this was a problem. Then again, this is a decent series overall but it still has some problems. It’s decent but it’s not great if you understand that. It’s just not perfect. That’s all.

I love Betrayal and the Aftershock two-parter, mainly because when the Titans fall, they come back swinging. I mean, that opening fight scene is just perfect in all the right ways. And as for Part One, I don't think Terra really wanted to kill them (at least subconsciously, since in Part 2 we see she feels guilty in some way about their broken friendship). As to how they survived... I think Terra beat them all into unconscious and threw them into the deepest hole she could find, which is literally shown at the end of Part One. As you said in Titan Rising, she's pretty powerful; she could've killed them if she really wanted to (granted Raven and Starfire would been a bit of challenge but still). And I liked your take on her relationship with Slade in the show and how she's basically lost all agency despite being more powerful than him by the time she makes the decision to leave. As for the Non-Terra episodes, yeah, I agree I would've liked to have seen more of her before the big betrayal, it would've hurt even more lol

I'm so happy that this is out! While I prefer Raven's arc with Slade, I really like this one too. I'm a writer and am actually in talks with an agent about a project of mine, and I think like, 1/10th of the inspiration for it is taken from the power dynamic between Slade and Raven and then Slade and Tara. It's so funny because I've not thought about this show in years, but something about it was interesting enough that I kind of let it simmer and blend with lots of other things, until it has a few similarities and is maybe reminiscent of this power dynamic, but has its own life and history and the characters have their own compulsions. It's a great kind of story. The idea that you feel like you need greater power than you possess, to achieve some goal, and you accept the offer of someone who you know is not a good person until you feel like you're as dark as they are. The people you used to fight beside are now tasked with taking you in, because now, you're the monster. Studies in just how far someone can go before they're truly unredeemable, and the lengths you'll go to in order to save someone you love are always extremely interesting to me. It's funny, because the movie Labyrinth (RIP David Bowie) was another loose form of inspiration, so for this very dark story about manipulation and compulsion and losing faith, you've got a "kid's cartoon" and a Jim Henson movie as part of the inspiration. It's a weird world, isn't it? Keep up the awesome reviews! I can't wait for "Oh, and Raven... happy birthday." And I'm so curious as to what will come after this! I'm really glad it helped me find your channel!

Well for me Terra is the best character in TT. She is really tragic character she lived alon, she was(at least in her opinion) betrayed by the very people she trust. And the thing that all of it was caused by misunderstanding make it even more tragic, very similar to ancient greek tragedy in fact. Then she is under influence of abuser who and cannot ran away from him. But at the end she chose to fight with evil within herself and outside of herself and confess herself. She did horrible things, she betrayed and was betrayed but at last she chose the good. And to paraphrase Edward Elric from FMA "she was just a human".

There were other planned episodes to have Terra in them in situations like you mentioned, but they were ultimately not given the chance do be finished or aired thanks to the way the studio wanted the show among other reasons. There's a cartoon tie in comic that is referenced in the show during Aftermath, however, which proves there were meant to be other Terra plots. That seems to be the case with a lot of things, since each season is only given 13 episodes which is chump change for the plot. Love your videos btw!! Both FMA and this are very well done.

First of all, thank you Lowart for showing me this great show! When I finished watching all of the 5 seasons I become super hyped for any sign of a possible reboot. And for no reason in particular, I want to write down my wishes if a reboot will ever be made: - Give Teen Titans a proper first season where you introduce the characters maybe even start the show before they became the "Teen Titans" (the prequel episode "Go!" was kind terrible because it's impossible to make a prequel of so many characters meeting up in only 22 minutes). - Manage better the episodes that do not follow the main plot of the season, do not disconnect them completely from everything that happened cause in some cases it really felt like I just skipped a season, which bugged me and made me enjoy those episodes far less. - Do not go "Teen Titans Go" on the animation, Teen Titans has a lot of action there is no room to go greedy on the animation budget. - Do not force any of your political agendas, the original show didn't care about genders, the characters where casually badass no needs of explicitly stating it (hello, emoji movie).

As a kid & even now it made sense to me that Raven wouldn't trust Terra after she came back. In *s1 ep6 "Nevermore"*, we learn that Raven has trouble opening up to people/letting herself get close to others. Raven even states in *s1 ep1 "Divide and Conquer"*, after Starfire tries to cheer up/help the others get their thoughts & feelings out after Cyborg left: *"...My mind is never troubled. People come...people go... It's pointless to be upset about Cyborg."* Then Raven's powers immediately lets the viewer know that she's in denial of the fact that Cyborg leaving upset her. Kind of how in *s2 ep5 "Fear Itself"* Raven chose to deny her fear, which then lead to her powers basically making the very same monsters from the scary movie just so she could admit the fact she truly was afraid. While Raven has good control over her emotions most of the time, she also tends to be someone who will bottle up her emotions until they all come spilling out in a way she wouldn't want (through her powers/small moments where she reacts with anger). Similar to how some people bottle up their emotions until they reach a breaking point & let out their emotions in a way that could bring consequences.

Honestly, once again I am quite pleased with how this turned out and how honest and fair you were. The Series you've got going here is one of being fair and re-watching when necessary, and giving your honest opinions while also praising and occasionally criticizing the smaller things that do honestly break up the continuity, even if they are gag episodes. I honestly adored Terra/Tara/however you spell her name, as she is something special and different, even by the standards set by Raven, Beastboy, Starfire, and the others. As she is always second guessing herself and wanting to change, but fears the idea of doing so in the idea that she could lose both of the "homes" she could call her own, but knows that she would be betraying one of them, so she attempts to do what is what she thinks to be, the only way to keep her "home" with Slade, and to carry out his plan. But you can see the hesitation in her eyes, the regret, the heartbreak, the fear, the second glances. It makes her so human yet so foreign at the same time, while not making her some 2 Dimensional villain that we can just call the shots of right off the bat. And I do agree that the "conclusions" to the titans being defeated one by one does seem to lead to their deaths, but we do have to think: Starfire can survive the cold vacuum of space. Cyborg has survived longer falls and is resilient as diamond. Raven can teleport if need be. Beastboy can take sizes alllllllllll the way down to amoeba size. And Robin....Well, he wouldn't be their leader if he wasn't able to find some way out, even if it is a tad far fetched. I must say, I am quite happy, and dare I say proud to see that you are being so fair and honest, and hope that you are enjoying the series as much as I did. (My girlfriend never saw this series, and only knew of TTG, and enjoyed it, but once I showed her this, she understood my less than stellar view of the show and how it felt insulting to a fan of the older version.) Once again, my subscribing finger is itching and chances are, once part 5 rolls around, I am probably going to hit the sub button, as this series has me hooked, and for a minute or two there, i felt horrible as I thought I had missed an episode, but realized it had just been a while between Part 3 and Part 4. Here is to Part 5 Lowart, let's see how good you can make it!

It isn't an issue with it being "comedic" as I don't mind jokes and a good laugh here and there. But when even my 10 year old sister looks at it with a look of "Why?" at most of the jokes, and laughs at almost everything, it is clear that they aren't putting forward any real effort into it. And gave it a colorful style with, at its absolute best, toilet humor that just feels awful. And to add insult to injury with the rather poor design of its world, there is nothing to learn from any episode, save for the one episode where they show Robin being tricked into thinking his parents are alive, despite being an orphan, and everyone in the team laughing when he begins to sob, and the "jokes" only get worse from there, with the episode ending on a rather cheap "Dont take things too far" lesson, and that is about it for lessons in the show. And considering that Cartoon Network has been suffocating the entirety of their channel with TTG which has basically stamped out most of the other shows on the network, it is rather insulting to know that such a poor "Teen Titans" series is taking over the channel and setting a VERY low standard of comedy, design, and use it as a crutch when they dont know why none of their other shows won't take off/have extreme difficulty taking off. whatsnewcartoons.tumblr.com/tagged/cartoon_network For further proof that the show is being shoved down the throats of anyone who so much as flips to the channel, check this scheduling sheet out. The UK schedule is the same as the US schedule, save for the edits that the UK makes to certain shows such as Steven Universe. Notice the obscene lack of diversity in viewing content that the UK and US have, because of TTG, and not because it is super popular, but because it gets its views from people who just leave the channel on for background noise, or because it FORCED to be popular as roughly 75% of their channel's content is ONLY TTG. Which if you dont see a problem with, when a very poorly made, toilet humor filled show that even a 10 year old who laughs at 90% of what she sees, won't laugh at, and holds no merits in lessons or standards of quality other than occasionally taking a pot shot at itself for how bad it is, which doesnt make it better, just means they acknowledge how poorly it is made, especially in comparison to the original one from 2003, then I can't help you sir. I know that a lot of it comes down to opinions, but when almost every child I've met has disliked it, or never bothered to watch it due to how poor quality it is, I am going to take that as a sign, that the show genuinely isn't that decent in any regard outside of being animated in 2018, where the other was animated in 2003. And as a fan of the original series, I feel insulted that this series has run longer due to it being forced onto the channel and barely giving any room at all for any other shows to flourish or even attempt to take up root. And feel that is is horrendously unfair that of all things, a series as amazingly well rounded as the original Teen Titans was cancelled for minor things, one of which was that *TOO MANY GIRLS WERE WATCHING IT*, is now succeeded in name and surpassed in season total by a show that barely ever tries and is only kept around for the toddlers of ages 4 and lower, I am going to feel insulted.

I've known a couple of Terras in real life. She's a very accurate take on a girl who' was left to fend for herself, gets in over her head trying to cope, and becomes her own worst enemy. A sad and realistic character.

I love how you point out flaws and criticize this show while stating the good things and reinforcing why we still love the show. That wouldn’t be the case with other channels. They would either harshly criticize it while never pointing out the good things while others would go “wow, teen titans was so cool! Here are ALL the good things about it!” I like how real you are and how deep you go in your analysis. You got yourself a new sub!!!

Isn't it implied that the Titan's survival is evidence that Terra may be able to rid the team, but she can never finish off her friends? I believe Slade reprimands her for exactly that-her unwillingness to go so far in getting the job done...correct? She may put on a face, but the way Terra allows the Titans to converge under the earth shows that she knows what she's doing. If she *really* wanted them gone, then they simply would be.

Exactly. She chooses to spare them without consciously realizing it because of her desire to be a good person and her love for them despite her anger at herself and Beast Boy.

Lowart, the reason why Terra is gone for some episodes is because of the budget. I read in an interview a, long time ago, that she could only show up for some episodes because having a main cast for 6 characters was pricey.

Terra,I LOVE HER SO MUCH AS A CHARACTER! Her arc is probably the best part of the entire show. In "Aftershock part 1" I kinda look at it as Terra having a tantrum sort of. Everything she does in the episode is fueled by one sentence"Slade was right,you don't have any friends". She felt hurt and betrayed by Beast Boy when he said that,and you see it when her expression changes when she walks off with Slade. I blame Slade for the whole thing cause Terra was trying to tell Beast Boy the truth and if she had been the one to tell him and not Slade, I don't think he would've been as angry. However Slade didn't give Terra that chance on purpose,he knew how B.B would react. I of course feel she did redeem herself by giving her life to right her wrongs,save her boyfriend and friends plus the city. She knew she had made a mistake(admittedly one Slade pushed her into),but she owned up to it and did what she could to make it right. That's why in the end they forgave her and put the plaque on her grave.

There's actually an answer to MOST questions about that the show never clears up thanks to the comic books they're based off of and other snippets of knowledge from the DC universe. That's why the open-ended nature of the show never really tore me apart as much. SPOILERS - What do Robin's eyes look like? Watch any Batman series and you'll find out. - Who is Slade? Slade Wilson, father of Grant, Rose, and Jericho. His identity has no personal connection to any of the Titans like we were led to believe. That's a psychological head game he played. - Who is Red X? Red X is based off of Red Hood, who is an evil persona of Robin. The identity of Red Hood (and therefore Red X) is Jason Todd, who is one of the other Robins that Batman took under his wing... whereas the Robin in the series is Dick Grayson. - What was the deal with Terra at the end of the series? Now this one I'm not very certain of, but she was apparently cloned according to the comics. That was not really Terra, but someone else whose DNA got mixed together with some of the DNA of the original Terra. This is why she seemingly had the ability to use Terra's powers (hence the ice cubes in her glass that sunk to the bottom when she got tense) but NO memory whatsoever, or whatever memory she had was locked away and needed to be shaken loose. This next part is NOT in the comics, but based on the Slade bot at the end that was taunting Beast Boy, it seems likely that Slade is the one who created this clone of Terra as a way to psychologically mess with the minds of the Titans once again. It hurts very much to see someone you were so close to, and for them to not want anything to do with you. Slade probably believed it would be spirit-breaking for Beast Boy in particular, who has recently proven to be far more of a threat than Slade once thought after Beast Boy played a HUGE role in rescuing the entire Teen Titans from nearly every villain in the season 5 finale. This is information he probably learned from Wintergreen, who was his butler that worked with the Brotherhood of Evil along with almost every other villain in the series.

Hmm good theory,also something left out of the series is Terra is a princess like Starfire and Blackfire. The whole reason she has powers as all is she got experimented on as well as her older brother

It's dope how you respond to and engage with the audience in the comments at the beginnings of your videos and how all your points and criticisms have logical arguments. I never noticed how season 2 played around with genres so much until your last video (genre hopping with a core of solid characters is what makes shows like community so great); it's given me an even greater appreciation for the show makers. Glad to be on board!

I see this video is pretty old, but wanted to say my own interpretation for part one of Aftershock. For me, I always took the Titans living after their encounter with Terra was to show that Terra still wasn't fully committed to Slade's plan. While we are lead to believe she's fully switched sides, we've seen that even when she's being a double agent, she always is a bit hesitant to fully go through with his plans . In part two, Terra is haunted by the good memories she had during her time as a member and friend of the Titans. So with this in mid, I always assumed she subconsciously let them live while convincing herself they were indeed dead. It isn't explained well in the show though

My main grip with terra was always her confrontation with Beast Boy when he calls her out right after Slade told him what she did. That’s what she uses as justification for fully turning evil. I recommend that you read the Dark Titans trilogy by Lathis you don’t have to review it (though that would be nice to see), but I think you’d enjoy it. I’m currently on part 4 of your titans series and the author basically makes ryoga a distaff counterpart to terra as everything you said applies to him as well. Even the decline while out of universe its because he starts focusing more on his favoritism of ryoga and his dislike of others but in universe it is a personality issue as ryoga ignores the advantages he’s gained to focus on feeling superior. So that by the time Reflections Lost on a Dark Road rolls around the only way you can describe as is evil and the titans by extension for constantly enabling him. sadly this was completely unintentional

So can I point out that the beginning of episode 4 is actually a call back and reference to Cyborg's past of being a football player before he was saved by his dad at the star labs explosion. It's such a small and nuanced approach for fans of the original comic. A lot of these details like the batcave in S2:E1/2 being very similar to the batman the animated series. There are a lot of references and care to let the viewers know that they really know these characters.

I, and most likely many others, would love it if you did a series on the first two seasons of Young Justice before the third season comes out. I'm assuming you've heard of it based on your interest in animation and the fact that your covering Teen Titans which is sometimes compared to it. You could even do a shorter series similar to the one you did for FMA and FMA:B/the manga comparing them in terms of characters, animation, soundtracks and so on rather than episode by episode (although this would be less appropriate since they're not adaptations of the same thing). Obviously I don't know what your work load or schedules are like so you should do what's best for you and your channel. Whatever you decide to do I wanted to say how much I've been enjoying your content recently after finding you. Your analysis is always fair, honest and insightful; the debates you inspire are great; your approach to receiving feedback is humble and open-minded; and the way you involve your viewers helps builds a sense of community which is really nice. I hope your channel continues to grow and gets the attention I think it deserves.
