As always, BEWARE OF IMPORTED CLONES of the original part. You can put a Band-Aid on the problem, or you can solve the problem.
If your Designjet 500 or 800 printer is telling you "Open window and check printhead cover is properly closed," the most likely cause is the upper frame on the ink tube system is cracked or broken. The printhead cover on the carriage locks into the lower latch in the ink tube system. If the lower latch is compromised, the machine will not function.

Thank you for posting these videos. Thanks to them I was able to replace the belt on a DesignJet 800PS easily yesterday and noticed the latch was missing.

hi do you know if your version 500 uses the really expensive printhead ink cartridges or does it use the individual ink tanks?//if it uses the expesnive printhead style cartridges i would not recommend buying the printer as the ink cartridge costs are ridiculous

Just ordered the spare part as mine has broke in an identical manner....gaffa tape just isn't going to help it and suspect that the printing quality may have something to do with the fact that there is insufficient downward pressure on the print heads.....In the UK so will wait for postage so a christmas project!!....broke the part because i had to replace the yellow print head but still it starts banding towards the end of the print....also thought about calibrating it to the paper i am using as its matt coated, might make a difference

My printer Model Hp Z5400 is showing Maintainance Kit 2 is needed, When this message arrived, the machine was working fine but now not accepting printheads. Suggest solution and also I want to know what is code of service menu. Can we stop or clear message from service menu setting. Pls Help . And Thanks for your previous helpful replies.

I just buy new printhead black and yellow for 510ps with expiration date 2021 . The machine is rejecting them (black !) saying that is worn out. I have update the Firmware to A.05.01 but did`t fix the problem. Any suggestion how to fix this? Also I can't get any celebration successful starting with the printheads aliment :(. P.S. Great videos. You are the KING.

Hello Bob, I am using an HP Designjet 500 but I have small streaks visible on my prints coming out. It used to print smooth and evenly until I stopped using it for a few months. I have replaced the print heads, ink, and ran "align print heads" along with "color calibration" without good results. Is there anything else I may be missing? Thanks!

Streaks are caused by clogged print head nozzles or the paper advance calibration being off. Try setting the print heads in a coffee mug with 1/2 inch of Windex overnight and then press the PH onto a folded paper towel to pull some ink out and put them back into the machine. If the streak is consistent 3/4 inch apart, it is the paper advancing the wrong amount between scans. The ADVANCE CALIBRATION will correct that. The printer is having a carriage motion problem. This is usually caused by a worn out belt. Look under the belt for debris that looks like black pencil erasure crumbs. If they are present, the belt is disintegrating and needs to be replaced. Also look for debris in the motor pulley.

In the service tests menu, run the paper advance test. If the result is a 41:10, replace the paper motion motor. If the test results in a 56:10, replace the roller encoder disc and sensor.

So i did this repair on my printer with one of the cheap ebay replacement covers and now Im getting an 79:04 error. would your part fix this? tried updating firmware but its telling me I have to share the printer before I can update. any suggestions?

If the firmware on the electronics module has become corrupt, you may have to replace the electronics module. First pull out all the inks, paper, and printheads and try booting again.

@@LPSshowsyouhow Thanks. I pulled everything and was able to re add ink then paper and it didn't glitch out until i out the cyan print-head in. ordered another and hopefully will be back up and running soon. will defiantly check back with you when I need parts.

Hello!! After aligning the print head, the chip of the black ink cartridge is reset, as if the cartridge is missing, and it doesn't matter if it's full, what could be the problem, because I can't use it! It finishes printing the test, then it hangs around for a while, and then, who gives me to put a black cartridge in it!! Can you give me an idea where I should look for the error? and no error codes.

Hi. Is the black ink cartridge an HP or after market? The easiest solution is to replace in cartridge.

The message you are getting indicates that the printer is seeing a problem with the carriage motion. Most of the time this is just a worn out belt. I recommend the appropriate belt replacement kit at: www.lpscomputer.com/collections/designjet-500-800-belts-belt-kits

nice and clever idea but just too expensive for me, I would get 18x Ink Tube Covers for the same price inc. the latches. To send that part to me in the UK with customs charges could buy another 10, I would be forced to buy from china. Could your clever son/s not make the complete part to save not having to put tape on it. Or even make it in 2 parts.

We will certainly consider making a more cosmetically appealing version of this part. We get several calls per week, specific to this issue, and up till now, we haven't had much of a solution other than replacing the entire ink tube system. The Chinese clone of the top cover suffers from the same mechanical flaw inherent in HP's original design. Hence the re-design. :)

at least you can provide a solution to a design problem even HP have got wrong, but I take it when the T520 was designed they corrected this problem ? I have not seen a T520 so I have no idea I mainly play with the 500 and 800. I find a few cheap non working ones and rebuild them into a working one. I nearly got the Canon printer until I saw a few of your videos and liked the way that came apart as you say in a modular way. :) for a start can you make the part in black.. and make the upper part to replace the tape, I think that part would be a little thicker but looks better than tape. But who watches the print head going mad side to side to notice as long as it stops the problem.. or am I the only one that's put a small strip of LED lights inside the print cover to see the thing print. took the power from the spare plug from where the fan would be on the ink supply station and wired it to the interconnect boards socket as the fan was 12v so is the LED lights :)

Hello Bob, Designjet 800 replaced trailing cable. Now it turns itself off after initializing, right before the fans are about to start. I can get to the service menu but any test of paper roll or anything hardware re;ated turns the printer off. Any ideas as to what it could be? A spontaneous shutdown during initialization is almost always due to a failing power supply. I recommend replacing the PSU.

@@LPSshowsyouhow Swapped power supply and exact same thing keeps happening. Do these printers have a breaker that could be tripping when current is demanded? Maybe debris falling into fans or rollers? I'm just thinking out loud

Kept swapping parts with a donor printer until I got it, it was the electronics module. Just in case it happens to somebody else. Thanks Bob
