Amberghini found a project for me, a 2010 Chevy Avalanche that needed an engine swap. I called J&J Auto Wrecking, got a low mile 5.3 out of a 2011 Tahoe coming, then went to pick up the truck. After picking it up I found that it had about 10PSI of oil pressure at idle and was misfiring badly, this may have been damage from Active Fuel Management, or just a pump failure. The new engine was far more complete than I needed it to be so we stripped it down so we could start the swap the next morning. The swap is a quick in and out, once it was done I replaced all the consumables and one O2 sensor. This truck is ready to hit the road again.

My wife's 08 suburban dropped one afm lifter at 220k miles. I replaced the entire afm system with news parts for under 800 dollars. The problem is the afm system runs with lots if solenoids that activate with oil pressure. People dont change the oil often enough and all the solenoid screens clog up drying the afm lifters out.

The AFM lifters get oil regardless of when they’re active or not. It’s a separate oil circuit that collapses the lifter for cylinder deactivation. The AFM lifters don’t dry out.

GM engines do last a long time. My Saab had a 2.0L Ecotec engine and I sold it at 190,000 miles with the orignal powertrain and everything still working. Only a new alternator at 70,000 - that was it. I know people love to hate them but I have had only good experience with those engines.

I can verify the low oil pressure on the engine pulled is from the valley cover. The oil pick up tube o-ring can be a factor as well. But an engine swap was probably the quickest solution you ended up doing.

Love the use of the dust separator with the hoses on the wrong way. From the vacuum to the top and out the side. This is what creates the cyclone to separate the dust and heavy dirt.

Impressive! (Except the dirty vacuum stream on the cyclone is the other pipe. The vacuum cleaner is connected to the upright pipe perpendicular to the floor). You guys are hard workers. That would have taken me all week.

Your Dust Deputy is hooked up backwards; vacuum source enters at the top of the cyclone. Will work much better.

5.3L needs the driver's side valve cover replased due to the fact the PCV is built into it that can cause oil to fowl the plugs...and FYI there is a small filter in that vally pan that gets clogged and also the 5.3L's have that active fuel management system and the lifters on cyl 1,4.6.7 can fail and cause a dead miss..just fixed that same issue on boss's truck yesterday...after everything was fixed oil pressure is around 50 when hot now and nomore dead miss...use only lifters from a dealer no aftermarket ones

Engine was probably ok until recently. Common problem is failure of the oil filter. Exact thing happened to mine. Lost oil pressure and everything on the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Checked oil sender and changed pressure sensor. Oil was bad. I changed it and checked the old filter and the inside looked funny. I started it and nothing wrong anymore. That was 3 years ago. I've heard of this happening a lot since then.

You guys make it look to easy and glamorize it to much. I can remember spending hours upon hours changing engines in my home garage or in the back yard or the parking lot at college. When you say “we just have to hook a few things back up” thats a lot of crap to hook up on these newer engines. Never the less,I enjoy watching your channel... 👍

I dunno. If you're not changing to a different engine (year or size) it still should be plug and play, just more plugs. The harness is gonna land where it needs to be, it's not like you're wiring from scratch. As an aside, the quickest I changed an engine was in just over three hours. Of course it was a mid-'70's PU truck with zero emission controls and none of the countless sensors todays engines have.

John B. I know what you are saying because what I was changing engines on were late 60’s - late 70’s when I was changing engines. I’ve never changed one in 3 hours though. I guess I just didnt know what I was doing.... I was just saying that a short video doesnt tell the entire story when it comes to changing an engine....

@@mikerobbins5049 I see your point too. Even when swapping out for the same, you never know what kind of butchery a previous owner or mechanic has done. Another big factor in swaps is what part of the country you live in. Live in the 'rust belt'? You're gonna be fighting every nut and bolt that has to come off. Either way, it's all good. This video wasn't meant to be tutorial on how to do a swap.

Every time I change out an LS motor I crack the oil pan and change out the oil pump pickup o ring they are famous for getting hard and cracking leading to low oil or no oil pressure

Try this: instead of shouting out #Milwaukee(apparently they are deaf), every once in a while list the companies that HAVE sponsored or supported your channel in some way at the end of the video. I had same problem on my 2008 GMC Yukon XL with 125000 miles, fixed it by replacing oil pick up tube o-ring. The problem is that AFM system is controlled by oil pressure, with low oil pressure lifters get stuck. The part cost like $3, plus oil pan seal and I did all the labor myself. I mean, if you have this problem, try fixing it first, doesn't cost much and if it doesn't work, then go for a big job, engine swap.

Don't be surprised if the catalytic converters take a dump. The MIL or as they put on the dash check engine light. If it has a severe miss fire the MIL will flash. During a miss fire unburned fuel goes down the exhaust where the catalyst tries to process it. The thermo reaction is so intense it destroys the substrate. Now if the owner heeded the warning and stop driving the cat's might be ok.

The engine may be just fine. Avalanches are known for bad oil pressure sensors. The stuck lifter can easily be un-stuck. Oil pressure could be low because the previous owner dumped alot of tranny oil in the oil to free the lifter And the there is a cylinder delete, delete

Just repowered a 2014 Ram promaster 3.6 with 627,000 miles. Timing chains stretched to the point the cam was 7 deg out of time. Still didn't use any oil no smoke ran smooth. Bought it new drove every mile on it. 90% highway miles, travel all over the country. Transmission was rebuilt this summer. it's on you tube "500,000 mile transmission" I know guys with a million miles on chevy and fords in my business. It can be done.

I have a 2011 LC9 5.3 with 185k miles, I tuned out AFM with HP Tuners at a local shop. Engine seems healthy and strong. It hasn't burned any oil either.

What oil do you use? I have a 2011 also 5.3 with 142k I run it pretty hard. But I disabled the afm with the range device also.

Yep. AFM bit me in the ass hard last December with my 2007 Sierra 1500 with a 5.3 at 125000 miles when the driver's side head gasket failed. I experienced hydro lock. Ended up paying a 40 mile tow to get it home. After allot of soul searching,I decided to pay to have the head gaskets replaced.I thought I found the right garage to do it. But they never did it right when they steered me towards an AFM delete. They never replaced the camshafts.Never replaced the valley cover.And never replaced the o-ring on the oil pick up tube.Or replaced the engine mounts. After $5000 and 3 months of questionable repairs, they determined my engine was shot after low oil pressure and a check engine light developed.With 8 hours or troubleshooting,and charged me $500 in labor to replace my Bosch spark plugs with AC Delco plugs.They urged me to go with a new $8000 engine. I hard passed on that. But I would have done that had I not wasted $5000 fixing the original engine. Fortunately,I contacted an engine specialist garage who knew what they were doing.The owner guessed I had a valley cover problem.They replaced the Gen IV valley cover with a Gen III valley cover and that finally fixed the low oil pressure and check engine light problem I went through hell for over 2 months after the garage that told me my engine was shot. A year later,I honestly wished I had just taken the $1700 cash offer from junkmycar.com before I had the headgaskets replaced. But for better or worse,I still have my 07 Sierra that's my daily driver and will hopefully get me through this frigid Wisconsin winter.I have yet to decide on what to transition to with a different vehicle. But it won't be another pick up.

Nice video by the way. I used to have a 2007 Avalanche LTZ and now I have a 2008 Escalade EXT which is basically the same except the bigger 6.2 and all wheel drive and a few extra bells and whistles. Anyway I tow a large travel trailer on occasion with my Escalade and I put in a big transmission cooler. I took the entire front clip off so I could do a proper job mounting the cooler and running lines. The clip came off in like 30 minutes, another 20 mins removing the radiator and AC condenser would have exposed the entire front of the engine making an engine swap super smooth.

Gm makes a very good 5.3l if taken care of , my 05 avalanche is sitting at 293,000 miles on stock engine and still running strong

All that work, hopefully you swap out those headlights if only for an inexpensive aftermarket brand (that doesn't have a Hellcat-inspired hole in it).

Current GM production vehicles and engines could use some help, but GM vehicles and engines from 2000 to 2010 were built well. My 2006 trailblazer LT with 166000 is going strong, and I will take it anywhere.

Should have changed the oil pressure sensor while it was out and the intake was off for preventative maintenance but f@!& it!

Hey JR, ANY GM vehicle which has the Active Fuel Management (AFM) have a problem with alternating the cylinders to keep the oil pressure from getting TOO high or low which results in terminal engine damage. I'm with you on the fact that the truck got over 200,000 before complete failure., I have done at least 20 engine swaps in the last few years, non of which made it past 130,000.

My dad has an 03 Avalanche that is lifted 9 inches with 37 inch tires. Really nice truck but it is always broken. So he just got it fixed after a speed sensor snapped after what he thought was the front end locking up. He is planning to sell it. I have a 99 Blazer. It has a rod knock after overheating. Well I want to buy back the truck in 5, 6, maybe 7 years. I want to take the motor out of it and swap a diesel in it. Then I want to put the 5.3 in my Blazer. Then I want to keep this truck for a long time. Maybe daily it cause why not. Or give it back to my dad with all of his plans before he has to sell it

That’s a Denso O2, it’s not cheap. I’m a mechanic in Wichita, you should shop at Poormans. The parts are cheaper, and they carry factory parts for GM and Ford.

The Denso was $37 and the Bosch was $100. I was pretty happy about how cheap it was 🍻

Got a 2004 GMC Yukon with 340k. Recently had to replace the shift solenoids but other than that it runs great.

I checked the oil pressure sending unit on the old motor after U-Pull-It and oil dipstick tube o-ring common for that motor in a year mine is a 06 and mine has high oil pressure that bounces around because it needs a new sending unit

I really wish I seen this I did a engine swap and we bolted the torque converter the wrong way! We had it on the engine before installing so that's a bummer
