Today, we're going to change the Chain & Bar on a Stihl MS170 Chainsaw.
Make sure the chain is free before starting. Use a 19mm Hex Socket Spanner to loosen the two nuts that hold on the sprocket cover on the side of the machine. Then use a screwdriver to loosen the chain tensioning screw between the guide bar and the machine, you will notice the chain will begin to become slack. Continue to unscrew the two sprocket cover nuts on the side of the machine. This will allow you to remove the casing, completely freeing the chain and bar. Carefully pull away the chain from the bar until it's fully removed. Make sure the bar & chain are compatible with each other and the machine before fitting. When placing the chain onto the guide bar make sure that the cutting edge, highlighted in red, is facing away from the body of the machine on the top edge of the guide bar. This means that the cutting edge should be facing in the direction of the blades rotation. If the chain is placed in the wrong direction it could lead to further problems, and will give the affect of a blunt chain. This should be avoided by taking the correct precautions. Place your new chain around the bar. Feed the chain around the bar, and check that it is seated correctly. Make sure the chain moves in a smooth motion and it doesn't snag. Place the chain around the chain sprocket. Make sure the two screws are seated in-between the chain bar. Place the casing back on and hand screw on the two nuts. Using the screwdriver to tighten the chain tensioning screw between the guide bar and the machine. Once together, make sure the chain is moving smoothly and isn't too tight and doesn't have excessive slack. That's how you change the Chain & Bar on the Stihl MS170. I really think it would be helpful if you showed the position of the front chain tensioner before you start to tighten it. Many beginners (myself included) thought the screw should be as far out as possible. Shortly after I bought my saw someone corrected my thinking. I'd guess many people looking at this video are beginners and would benefit from seeing this detail. Also, I was taught to hold the nose of the bar up as I tighten. Perhaps this really isn't important... it's what I was taught and it is certainly part of the instructions in the manual.

So after i get the chain on the blade,tighten everything up and the fire it up,after it runs,i see little sparks from the tip of the chain. This normal? Is that just the chain adusting to the blade?

Tried to change the chain on my MS170, seemed simple enough until I tried to loosed the nuts that hold the plastic cover and bar. Nuts on both studs would not loosen and the entire stud came out of the body of the saw. Took a while to loosen the nuts and get them to stay in so the chain could be changed. Makes you wonder about Stihl.

Hi, sorry to hear that you are having issues with your chainsaw, there could be many reasons why this is happening. For example the clutch sticking, a worn bar sprocket or if the tension is too tight. Hahahahah. I'm hoping this is a joke for your sake. In my experience there are a few reasons this could happen but you'll find the answers on KZfaq, I promise. My Stihl doesn't like January, so I warm it in the house and it starts up right away. Otherwise, check the spark plug... sometimes a little plug cleaning will do the trick. If not, experts on KZfaq have certainly covered the problem.
