Installing Amazon's BEST CHEAP Catch Can on my Escalade

This is the best cheap catch can on Amazon! A catch can is a great addition to any car. It goes inline from the PCV valve to the intake manifold and "catches" any oil that makes it past the PCV. This one is my personal favorite which isn't only inexpensive but also very well made. I have one of these on my Tahoe, Trans am, and now the Escalade.

Had this one on my 99 Sierra 5.3. When the frame snapped on it (thanks Illinois), I saved it and now run it on my 92 Lincoln Mark VII. Have one on my '14 Armada, too :)

As a Ford guy, I can tell that these GMT trucks have some minor stupid things, but overall, they are very well made. Some of the last vehicles that were made with high quality to last untold years to come. I can't stop telling you that your rock/metal intros are quite cool, as I'm a metalhead too. Man I love your content.

Hilarious narration, especially the "custom threaded Loctite" part! This is a great real-world install video, even if some shortcuts were taken (like re-using hose cutters on zip ties). Super helpful to see the whole process, including potential pitfalls and solutions. Thanks for saving me time and frustration with my own catch can install!

Although it’s got super easy access to be screwed off but you could drill and tap for a standard gm oil drain plug to screw into or even a little valve like a fuel cutoff valve on a motorcycle so you could permanently attach a drain tube to it. Just an idea anyway. Loving the gmt900 content so far, looking forward to a lot more hopefully.

@@albertchaidez6317 the engine has no blowby. Has great compression on all cylinders and made excellent power on the dyno. I think filling a tiny 100ml can every 6000 miles is pretty reasonable.

You could. Really depends if you want to spend the money. Nothing bad is going to happen if you don’t, but if your truck is up there in mileage it will definitely keep the engine cleaner by catching the extra oil.

What happens when you don't empty it and oil gets sucked into the intake? If it was a good solution it would come installed from the factory. I understand its function, but have concerns.
@lsXmatt
@lsXmatt 3 ай бұрын
Never thought of that before. The engine would have to be in really bad shape, or the can neglected for years to get to that point. Mine fills up barely a 1/4 of the can between changes on my Tahoe. That has 260k on it, about 3-6 months between oil changes.
@jsomething2
@jsomething2 3 ай бұрын
once full, unless you unbolted it and turned it upside down while running it would just stop filtering oil and run the same as without a catch can. but honestly who would install this and not empty it when you change your oil? it even has a dip stick to check it. and if it fills before you check your oil then you probably need a rebuild anyways.

If I remember correctly, a PCV valve is related to emissions. Manufacturers have been following emissions related laws that hurt engines for a long time. One example off the top of my head. Displacement on demand in GM engines has been grenading engines for over a decade. This is a fix that keeps the PCV system working while keeping your intake clean. Win-win in my opinion.

@jsomething2
@jsomething2 3 ай бұрын
what clogged up on it? unless you blocked off the drivers side vent, it really shouldn't have built up much pressure in the crank case
@mattwilsonracing388
@mattwilsonracing388 3 ай бұрын
Im not sure why it clogged. It was on a road race engine and it built so much crank case pressure it blew the rear seal out within 2 laps. I took it off and put the stock breather routing back on, and have not had any more issues.
@jsomething2
@jsomething2 3 ай бұрын
like did you find a plugged up part in it or was maybe the 30$ Amazon one not big enough or high flow enough for a race engine? cause I could see that pretty easily. I have one of these on my daily yukon but my c6 that sees a few track days I went with a 400$ Elite engineering with clean side separator as well.
@lsXmatt
@lsXmatt 3 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t run this on a race car or anything boosted. Daily drivers and moderate power n/a builds it would be fine. If you’re making a lot of power the hose size and can capacity can be a restriction.
@mattwilsonracing388
@mattwilsonracing388 3 ай бұрын
@@jsomething2I didnt find an obvious restriction. A friend talked me into putting this catch can on it, and the first run it blew the rear seal out. Ruined our race weekend. I took it off and threw it straight in the trash. Didnt bother investigating what the restriction was. Id rather deal with a little oil getting into the intake than risk ending my weekend over a $30 Chinese part.

There’s no need to vent to atmosphere there’s not enough crank case pressure for it to cause any issues. It’s also a n/a vehicle.

Why would you want to vent it to atmosphere.? That would be just like driving around with an open 3/8” vacuum leak.

@@gearjonny369 There is usually a check valve in place but a vent to atmosphere is usually used on boosted applications that actually see positive vacuum. Or increased crank case pressures.
