William Barret Travis and James Butler Bonham were born in what is now Saluda County. These two men fought and died at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. We will look back to their South Carolina roots and see how they found themselves becoming heroic defenders of the Alamo.
Bonham and Travis both practiced law and made stops in Alabama prior to arriving to Texas. Travis found himself in joint command of The Alamo in 1836 with Jim Bowie. Bonham was sent twice with dispatches for reinforcements and he when he returned the second time he knew that he was returning to his death. No reinforcements would arrive and The Alamo would fall to Santa Ana and the Mexican Army.

182 brave men died at the Alamo defending freedom. What is San Antonio, Texas like today? Haven't been there since I was about six years old and that was some sixty years ago.

People knock Travis because he abandoned his pregnant wife and small daughter in Alabama when his businesses there failed, and for being a hothead who got all his men killed by trying to defend an impossible to defend position, but I think that's a little unfair. He was suffering from syphilis, taking mercury for treatment, and that can affect both thinking and behavior. Perhaps he deserves sympathy since he was ill. As the video mentions, both Travis and Bonham were vocal proponents of the legal theory of nullification, the idea that a state has the right to nullify, or invalidate, any federal law it deems unconstitutional, which was connected to the belief that states had the right to secede from the United States. As strong proponents for the expansion of slavery, they helped win Texas' place in history as the only republic to guarantee the right to own slaves and prohibit emancipation.

These people were all from slave holding states, from the South. As we all know, Davy Crockett surrendered at the Alamo, AFTER the battle and, was executed at once. Travis committed suicide at the north wall, when he saw that the south wall had fallen to the brave troops of Colonel Morales. Jim Bowie was hiding under his mattress, and was killed like that, without ever using his so-called, Bowie knife. The real patriotic men in the battle, were the Mexican soldiers, who were just defending their land from armed illegal aliens from the States. It's just that simple folks!

+Roger Borroel Travis's slave Joe said Travis was killed by a Mexican shot to the head early in the battle while standing atop the wall discharging his shotgun at the Mexican troops below. Bowie was confined in bed with tuberculosis by the 2nd day of the siege, according to Joe, Travis's slave.Crockett&5 others were captured& executed according to Enrique de la Pena, & Carllione, both being officers of Santa Anna, otherwise you are pretty much correct. Americans received free land grants on the condition they obey Mexican law& accept the Catholic faith, but the Americans got greedy& decided to TAKE Texas. That's the bottom line.

You mean like the"patriotic" Santa Ana who got his butt whipped later, and was dressed in a private's uniform running away like the coward he was from Sam Houston. Then, when Santa Ana died, no one came to his funeral! Yeah, the head Mexican Soldier was a real patriotic coward!!!
