The way you said that the mower frees you up to do higher order things is the same thing we say to companies when our technology displaces their people. "They'll be freed up to do more important and meaningful work." They just end up getting laid off in the end. Great video.

That was a truly great set up/review video LE. Watching you work your way through common issues is going to be hugely valuable for people that are considering buying a Robomower. Which, I guess, includes me now,..damn it. By the way, your property looks fabulous. The lawn came in great, the landscaping is on point, all the plantings look nice, great border work, solid retaining wall, and that incredible American Chestnut anchoring the yard. Maybe add a bench, another nice bird feeder, and some color, to catch the eye, out in that far corner in front where it is tough to grow grass. I'll be watching.

Thanks Morte, it turned into quite a long video. I’m loving the mower so far but I don’t think the mass market would put up with the setup I went through. Hopefully my experience can help other early adopters understand setup and troubleshooting.

Your reception problem near the house is not because of your RTK placement, That's a great place for your RTK It's just Luba being so close to the building is not getting good GPS signal. Both the RTK and Luba have GPS receivers and Luba has to see the sky just like the RTK. The link between RTK and Luba is almost never the problem because it's 900 MHz and it will penetrate walls. Also you may find you need to relocate your charger base being against the building like that will cause problems with Luba's GPS reception. I figured out this after a few days of pulling out my hair I relocated the charger station out 6 ft away from the house fixed a lot of the problems I was having. Great video It's fun watching you work through it! I hope you enjoy Luba I've had mine since February

Any source for 900 MHz link between luba and RTK ? From what I read it uses wifi 2,4 Ghz signal, thus only 120m range. Husqvarna on the other hand with their Epos (gps based) uses 900 MHz, thus they have much better range, around 450m. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJ2ljMKVt7DWkZc.html 6:02

What a great review! You whent through the exact same problems i had one month ago when I received my Luba. Your land is about the same as mine with 6 zones for a total of 18 000 sq feet, but you have more no-go zone than me. My landscape is made such that I did not have more than 2-3 minutes of trimming but now with Luba I have about 15-20 minutes of trimming because Luba leave quite a bit of uncut grass around each no-go zone and between zones. I would say more than a feet wide even though I was very precise when I defined these no-go zone. I find it faster and more efficient to cut those with my mowing tractor instead of using the trimming machine. That is until Mammotion will eventually improve their software to go around the no-go zone (make a rounded path like it does for a zone). My grass is also dense but "flimsy" so Luba leave quite a bit of uncut grass unless I cut it twice like you decided to do. Finally, my RTK is on the very top of my house and I still have a small area where Luba has lost its connection a couple of times but it recovers itself after a few minutes. By the way, I am also an engineer, I am now a retired engineer professor.

Thanks for checking in, it’s great to have another engineer’s opinion. It took me a bit to notice why the no go zones were trimmed so poorly. You nailed it, no border passes are taken on the no-go zones so it does seem like a fairly easy software fix.

Excellent Testing & Review of this GPS guided Mower. One item that puzzled me was how well the Luba operated on the opposite side of the House from the Ref Antenna location, but when the Mower came closer to the area directly below the Antenna, you got Positioning Errors. Both the Mower & Ref Antenna "see" GPS Satellites and need a min of 20 out of the 31 available Satellites from the GNSS system to keep mowing. Also, the RTK Antenna & Mower maintain constant communication between each other, @ 900Mhz, to compare GPS info & increase accuracy. That little black Antenna that attaches to the bottom of the RTK is the 900Mhz transmission/reception antenna for communications between the two and it's designed to radiate that 900Mhz radio energy laterally and Not straight downwards. See where I'm goin w/ this ? I've watched too many other YT vids on this Mower and that's a common occurrence, to have Positioning Error issues when operating below the RTK Antenna itself. Just sayin and this is the Best Owner/Reviewer vid on the Luba Mower out there on YT imho. I say that because your Lawn offers All of the challenges that Mammotion claims the Luba can handle and you Tested to prove the locating requirements for the Antenna & Charging Station. Nicely Done !

Great information, thanks for taking the time to share. Also, I’m glad that you found value in my video. Based on the information you have provided and I have gathered, the best place for the RTK is likely at the center of my house. I’ll have to think about how to make that happen.
@uuzd4s
@uuzd4s 5 ай бұрын
@@TheLawnEngineer Thx ! Yea, the Mammotion User Manual, pg 16 of their current edition, addresses the "Line of Sight" issue between the Mower & Ref Antenna, but there is a slight disclaimer at the end saying, " . . . as long as the transmission path is not fully obstructed". I've got a similar situation in that the Lawn wraps around the House/Garage entirely w/ tall Trees along one border, meaning no matter where I place the Ref Antenna, there will be structural interference in some area. I think it's a compromise between the height you can mount the Ref Antenna and how much and what kind of material is preventing direct Line of Sight between the two (Wood, Metal siding, R/V's, Tree density etc.) Some Reviewers are having Positioning Errors w/ good RTK Ant locations and the Luba in a "Clear Sky" area but it's just over 200ft away from the Antenna and there are one or more Trees between the two. I figured that if the Positioning Errors under the Antenna were an ongoing issue for your particular setup, that you'd try that upper Roof line for the RTK at some point. I just purchased the Mod 3000 on this last Black Friday sale from that Jungle website and haven't mowed a single blade of grass yet due to weather. Mammotion offered the same price with "extras" tossed into the deal but the Return policy w/ the Jungle website seemed easier to deal w/ should I need to. They also offered their "no questions asked" Extended Warranty in 1 - 3 yr increments so I spent part of the sale price savings on a Warranty extension. Again, Nice Job on the Review of this Enigmatic little Robot ! Thx.

One thing you could try with the trampoline so you don't have to move it around every time. I think you can set up virtual walls at the point of the legs where it gets stuck so that it will only go under the trampoline where there isn't the bar. Let me know if that works for you because my main reason for wanting a robot is for cutting under my trampoline.

Appreciate this video and the information you provided. I am looking at this mower but have many very large trees also. I was looking for how much and where on your lawn and can't tell if you have more or less. Looks like you have mature trees even in the lawn area so wondering how much that impacts the mower.
@TheLawnEngineer
@TheLawnEngineer 7 ай бұрын
Glad it was helpful. It does not skip a beat with the mature trees that don’t have any branches down low. It does lose signal when it goes under brushy areas at spots on the edge of the lawn. When it loses signal, it pauses in place until it’s regained and then continues. I have had three occasions where it hasn’t regained signal and paused so long the battery died. In those cases I had to carry it back to the charging station but then life was good again. I could improve those areas by cutting back brush and using the pole saw to take off lower branches.

Excellent video - thank you. Can I ask for your thoughts on two equal sized lawns front and back with a gate separating them. I need to keep the gate closed (2 dogs). If you manually move the luba to the front lawn how would it get back to the charging station? Could you put a "cat flap" type setup in the gate? Or would the luba 'bounce' off it and just see it as an obstacle? Would a second charging station work? Appreciate any reply.
@TheLawnEngineer
@TheLawnEngineer Ай бұрын
I think the "cat flap" would work well. You have two options with obstacle avoidance with the Luba, using the ultrasonic sensors and not. In this case you would have to turn off the ultrasonic sensors. The front bumper is still active but takes a pretty good bump to activate it. I would think it could pass through a flap without activating the front bumper sensor. The next issue is making the Luba drive from front to back yards on the same path so it passes through the flap. To do this, you would make two zones and then define the connection between the two by the driving the luba from on yard to the other thru the flap.

@TheLawnEngineer
@TheLawnEngineer 23 күн бұрын
It is a software restriction in the acreage you can map. It likely has something to do with the memory capabilities for all the gps data. On a side note, I think it would be difficult for one Luba to keep up with that size lawn. If you lose a few days due to rain in peak growing season, the grass can get out of control. I think your best option is to run two robots.

@TheLawnEngineer
@TheLawnEngineer 10 ай бұрын
The perimeter is set from the side of the robot. The biggest secret is likely to design/change your landscape to allow you to drive the Luba over the edge without it getting stuck or damaged. This would involve setting edgers and driveway/roadway at the same elevation was the grass. The robot follows the path (including direction) that was programmed when setting up the mow areas.

Great video. The Luba looks like a fantastic machine, but I do have a couple concerns. I've used a Husqvarna robot for the past few mowing seasons. It's great when it works, but it's had major reliability issues. I can't count how many times it's been in the shop. So my primary concern is the Luba's reliability, and what do you do if it does need repair when you can't take it back to the dealer you bought it from? Also, does the RTK antenna need to be connected to power, or does it just need to be connected to the charging station with that cable?
@TheLawnEngineer
@TheLawnEngineer 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and checking in. I just finished filming an update video on the Luba. To my knowledge, there is no service or repair parts available. If this is a concern, do not buy it. I bought it from Amazon and it shipped directly from Hong Kong, there is no dealer to contact. The RTK antenna does need power. It can be plugged into the charging station or a separate power supply. The separate power supply was included in the main box and that is what I used to power the RTK.

Very comprehensive review, thanks for doing it. Clearly a superior product than the boundary wire robot mowers. But you get what you pay for. Luba is 3 to 4X the cost of the lower end boundary wire mower - which I have been using for a couple of years. Precise GPS controlled devices are big potential labor savor freeing people up from mundane mowng. But I honestly don't see these going mainstream due to 1) setup time 2) cost and 3) the significant problem of theft. Unless you live in a gated community anyone can pick this thing up and walk away with it. Yes you can put alarms and codes on them but your mower is still gone. These things are destined to forever be big boy toys unless they become easier to use and more affordable. They are getting fancier and more expensive not less expensive. One last question, what was the total acreage of your final mowed area map ? Thanks again.

You're welcome. Yes, it will be very interesting to see how this part of the lawn care market evolves over the coming years. I saw that John Deere announced a partnership with EGO, it's obvious that gas mowers are on their last iteration but will robot/gps mowers be mass adopted? Time will tell, thanks for checking in.

I'd love yo get your reply to three questions. One is does it leave a lot of clippings that you need to rake or clippings are small enough to just break down on their own? Second, does undercarriage get caulked up with grass when it's damp or wet? Last is what if I have a fence between front and back yard, can I bring it to front manually to keep gate closed? Thank you so much for taking your time to reply 😊🙏
@TheLawnEngineer
@TheLawnEngineer 8 ай бұрын
Great questions. The size of the clippings is exactly what is cut off during the mow job. There is no recutting or mulching of the grass. The good news is that you control this by how often you have the bot cut. There is some grass buildup on the deck after cutting wet grass but it has not created any problem for me. Also, it typically falls off when it dries out. Yes you can manually drive the mower and then have it start cutting. You will have to define different zones during setup but that isn’t difficult.

Both. Standard is to connect to the charging base. Mine also came with the additional power source to mount it remotely. The MAMMOTION website lists the additional power source as a free gift if you order now…I ordered from Amazon and it still came with the additional power source.

Don't get rid of your riding mower. You'll need it for when the Luba eventually breaks down or needs a new battery.
@TheLawnEngineer
@TheLawnEngineer 7 ай бұрын
It has been good for this season, but that is a very real risk. Hopefully when that happens, other US brands will have similar options. I would attempt a battery replacement but hopefully I won't have to.

@@TheLawnEngineer I think the other way to look at the calculus is that the Luba will extend the life of your riding mower to essentially forever so that you'll never have to replace it again. If you amortize it like that, it's almost like getting a used riding mower for free.

I had not tried to use any customer service. However, based on what others have said; do not order if you are expected support after the sale. Wait until some bigger brands catch up. These units are built and shipped directly from Hong Kong.

Can someone with working Luba configuration on his yard tell me how many satellites can see/use on your phone (for Android you can use app 'gps test'), not sure about ios. On my yard I can see 34, phone is locked to 10 of them (all this with offline mode, no help from wifi/mobile data). Is this good enough for Luba ? There are some trees in the yard.

I’ve tried an app for iOS. I’ve had as few as 6 satellites and as many as 14, seems to depend on the time of day. Luba is still working well for me.

I’ll never know if a Luba will work for me because their return policy is absolute bullshit. They only accept unopened boxes. I can test drive a vehicle, tour a house and even have an inspection done, but I can’t return an open box Luba if it can’t get good reception in my yard. It says to me they don’t have much faith in their product. I just returned an EcoFlow Blade after having it over a month for a full refund. Perhaps when they get their issues sorted out with their software I’ll just buy another Blade or a Yarbo if it ever gets released.
