I can see not shipping them (personally I'm just neutral) but there are a lot of things in the movie that can be easily seen as queer undertones. Even ignoring the relationships (platonic or otherwise) just the idea of having to hide your true self from the world because it could be dangerous, or Lucas parents finding out he went to the surface and immediately wanting to send him away to fix/protect him (ie finding out your kid was gay and sending them to conversion therapy) and the grandma at the end saying how some people will never accept him. while i agree this movie at surface level is a beautiful story about platonic friendships, there is UNDENIABLE queer allegory weaved throughout the entire film. whether or not it was intentional or not doesnt affect the fact that its there. the fact that people are choosing to see underlying messages about of queer acceptance does not take away from the storytelling or positive themes about loyalty and companionship, it simply adds to them.

I kind of understand why some people are saying that people are sexualising children by shipping Luca and Alberto, but people do that with Pokémon and Miraculous Ladybug and I don’t see anyone talking about that I think that if the story was about Luca and Gulia for example and people shipoed them to the extent of Luca and Alberto are, nobody would bat an eye

exactly!! kids (especially tweens like luca and alberto are) have feelings like adults do, and crushes are normal !!! i think people that are shipping them are just doing so innocently. anyone who sees kids having a crush on each other as something sexual is someone im worried about and will remain far away from 🧍 and, like you said, with countless other shows (pokemon, miraculous, gravity falls, steven universe, etc) people will ship kids around the same age as luca and alberto (chat noir and ladybug, dipper and pacifica, steven and connie) but since it’s heterosexual nobody thinks anything about it. since being gay is something seen as inherently dirty/sexual by the media bc of how long it was demonized. idk!!! just my thoughts JEHDJDJ

The other day I was singing at a coffee shop and a guy came up and was like, "I'm playing this gig today until 4 at this place: if you want, come and sing with me." It took me an hour to work up the courage to go, because I have anxiety and because it's so outside of the norm for me where I wouldn't have full control. I finally went over, looking in on the outside, and I was so tempted to turn around and go back. But I took a deep breath and said, "Silenzio Bruno." Then the guy saw me and waved me up on the stage, and I sang the last song with him (I told you I took forever to get over there, but I'm glad I finally did).

Representation probably plays a larger role in this than it's initially given credit for. Queer representation to be sure, but this hits a little harder when put in the context of "dreams" versus a "future". When Luca and Alberto first meet, they develop and work on a "dream": build a Vespa, then escape the limitations of Luca's parents by going to the human village in order to maintain their freedom and independence, then enter the contest to win a REAL Vespa so that their dream to travel and see the world is no longer JUST a dream. Their viewpoint on this is slightly skewed because Alberto has been living on his own for some time, figuring out how the surface world works with little to no guidance, but hey, it's kept him alive and free so far, so why deviate from his frame of mind? While Luca, basically a kid running away from home, latches onto Alberto as a guide and mentor because he is enamored with Alberto's confidence and worldliness and "big brother" persona. They have a goal to reach together...but how feasible is it, really? Think of it in the context of migrant workers or the children of transient parents, especially when it comes to Alberto. He's abandoned by his father, without a formal education or resources (whether on land or under the sea) and it left to figure things out on his own. This happens IRL more often then we care to think about...kids with parents that are pretty much absentee, no familial support, usually from a working class background, they either find a way to get along in the world, or get swallowed up by it. Growing up, I had a friend, originally from China, who came to the US with his mother, who kind of kicked him out when he was 16. Never told me details, just said "he's got to make his own way now". He wasn't interested in school or an education or anything like that...but MAN did he want a car. He could build one from memory, though he never had the money, resources or time to make such a dream happen. To him, having a car meant freedom and a true start to his life. 200 years ago, the equivalent would be owning a horse; freedom of mobility, to choose when to come and go, one of the many gateways into manhood. My friend eventually got his car, round about the year he turned 20...and I never really saw or heard from him again. He had accomplished his goal, on his own, so as far as he was concerned, he was free and the word was at his fingertips. Alberto isn't really concerned with some of the fancier trappings of the surface world because he has his own plans, and moreover, he doesn't believe himself able to achieve such goals because the world would never accept him for who/what he REALLY is. He feels trapped, in a way, by the idea that Luca is seeing things differently, but he can't, or won't, do the same. He has a dream: achieve/unlock Vespa and the world is at his finger/fin tips. With Luca by his side, he has a partner, an enabler, to join him in his conquest of the unknown. Whatever the world holds, it doesn't matter, they'll make it up as they go along and figure it out, together. But LUCA...he's fascinated by how the world works. He's essentially a farm boy, comes from a world with a rigid work/behavior structure, with a very level, predictable life ahead of him. But after spending a week or so with Alberto and Giulia, suddenly things are not so simple anymore...and they can't be, ever again, really. Alberto gives him a taste of the world as it appears to be. Giulia gives him a mouthful of what the world IS and how there is much, much more to it. "The stars are not sardines, they are like the sun only far away. And there are more in the sky than he can imagine. And around the stars are planets...!" To Luca, the world is bigger, more fascinating and more complicated than he ever though possible. Over time, he learns that LEARNING is what he really wants. He learned a lot from Alberto, but it isn't limited by his friend, it was just a first step...and now he's interested in taking more steps, up and away and into the "future" he never new he wanted. It causes a rift between he and his friend, exacerbated by the fact that Luca has just as much to risk by "coming out" as Alberto does, perhaps more so. Ultimately though, he skirts the line between choosing between his future and his friend, but just barely. There are extremes presenting themselves on both sides...Luca's parents are SO afraid of change and the surface world they'd rather their son spend as much time as far from the surface world as possible, more or less to protect him from harm and "cure" him of his interest. But Alberto's approach is just as dangerous, exemplified in Ercole. This kid NEVER grows or changes his world view or steps into adulthood...because why would he? He has the town more or less at his beck and call, he takes advantage of younger, less experienced children to win a contest over and over again (there is a rant in there about how people in power game the system and never let ANYONE rise above their circumstances because it rocks the established order and effects the bottom line of 'the success of the few measured against the progress of the many', but I digress) he has cronies to do his bidding and believes himself above the rest of the world and always right, even though he's clearly just a narcissistic bully. Either of these paths is dangerous. Luca (and ultimately Alberto) quite literally need to slide out of their 'skin', to succeed in their goals and, thankfully, be accepted for who they are. Alberto gains a father figure, a home and perspective on how to interact with the world as a young man, ready to make decisions like one. Luca gains friendship, acceptance from his family and the townspeople, plus an education and chance to learn how the world really works. NEITHER of these boys lose their dream...but the both gain a future. My mom was a sobbing mess when she saw this, too. It's a great friendship film, ambitious in it's need to tell a story and really develop characters over promoting a brand and formula. The inconsistency with the water transformations bugs me to, but eh...it makes for some interesting visual gags. Have you ever been to Italy? Also what is the "Nobody Cares Club"? Great vid! 😊

@@SophiaPhannn if you ever get a chance to go back, there is a small city, about 40 minutes outside of Florence, called Montecatini Terme, a town at the bottom of a small mountain range. That place is great on it's own, vineyards, shopping, quiet and quaint, all of the above. But, if you go to the village on TOP of the mountain, Montecatini Alto, there is a village that survived the bombing raids during WWII...it's almost identical to the one in Luca. Medieval, cobblestoned, charming, with more fantastic pasta dishes than you can eat in a week. The view is fantastic and they use these cool vertical trolley car lifts, basically cable cars that run at a 40 degree angle, to get to the summit. Or you can walk the 3 kilometers up and earn that fantastic 8 course dinner they offer at any of the restaurants. It's amazing, I wish I could return before I'm old and gray.

Honestly I see the seamonster aspect as more of an allegory for being gay (being yourself, hiding yourself, "coming out" in a sense). I think that's more of a gay message than necessarily the relationship between Luca and Alberto. Is it romantic, is it platonic...I don't think it matters one way or the other, simply because whatever it is, their relationship is beautiful.

When I heard that Luca was a "queer" film I was interested in how the story would play out. After watching it I realised why a lot of people decided to perceive it that way. However, I do love the original narrative of it being about platonic relationships more. Maybe it's just me but it's nice to see an animated movie that is just about friendship; no romance, no love triangles, no unnecessary drama stemming from a romantic place. I do think there is a bigger conversation to be had about films/stories continously revolving around the idea of a romantic relationship being a necessity, especially in children's films. Also it's nice to see two characters of the same gender able to be friends without the writers dropping a 'develop into a queer relationship' bomb, purely for the sake of marketing and their idea of representation. Edit: I'd like to say that as a queer person, yes I can definitely understand how important this movie is, especially for queer youth. A main thing I see nowadays is movies intentionally using a queer relationship development purely for the sake of the bare minimum of representation. And while Luca is not necessarily a queer film; it does have queer undertones that we can obviously see, which that in itself is very important. I really didn't want arguments to break out. Also I didn't specifically feel the need to state that I'm queer when I initially wrote this comment. After reading replies I realised people felt like I had overlooked certain aspects of the film that are important to many queer people, and that I was incapable of thinking that Luca and Alberto could indeed be queer people with a platonic relationship. I hope that cleared that up and if you haven't watched Luca go do it. You won't regret it.

I just saw this movie yesterday and it reminded me of my childhood, running around meadows, getting lost and unlost in random woods, exploring castle ruins, climbing everything there was to climb and doing other dumb fun things with other kids. Cute movie about friendships, family and tolerance.

I don't know if anyone has noticed yet, but I would like to point this out because I find it really interesting and cute.... the first minute of the movie where Luca daydreamed to look at the boat, we don't see it clearly but I'm pretty sure that the person standing there is Alberto!! And that is hella adorable!!

I have to say before I watch this reaction/commentary video, because I will ALSO be crying soon - I LOVED Luca. I love when Pixar does a big philosophical deep dive but sometimes it’s so nice to just have a simple, beautiful story about friendship and otherness. Not everything needs to be a metaphysical meditation on life’s meaning like Soul or a devastating emotional journey like Inside Out - as much as I love those other films, the most endlessly rewatchable Pixar movies for me are the ones like Luca. EDIT - also I read that the voice actors were like, recording their parts in their respective mom’s closets lol.

I honestly don't care how people interpret the movie's message and undertones. I'm here for the nostalgic summer feeling. the music and scenery just scream nostalgia to me. the message and friendships and finding yourself and the warm colors and ice cream, they all bring me back to my earliest years of childhood. when my problems were as little as winning a race. But those problems grew, just like in the movie. alberto being abandoned again. luca wanting to go to school but the pressure of alberto and hiding as a sea monster in a world of humans. all of that is like how our worries and problems get worse and larger as we grow. that's where the nostalgia comes from. the conflict in the movie is light and simple, just like the problems we faced as kids. Of course, the main message is extremely strong and great, but all of it tied up together in one big bubble of gay italian summer friendship carefree nostalgia was just perfect. I'm glad Pixar made one of these laid back movies. taking a step back to enjoy it instead of constantly trying to jump ahead. I cried watching the movie. It's funny, isn't it? a bunch of pixels moving to an audio of voice boxes, random noises, and sounds can make you cry. Somehow, it gives you a certain feeling. Somehow, a kids movie can tug on your heartstrings. Do you think there are people who wouldn't understand the feeling? people who don't feel it at all? Do they look at us and go, "That's weird, it's just a movie and they are so worked up." They wouldn't know, would they... I felt free watching the movie. without a care in the world, a young child once more. the nostalgia can replicate the feeling of being a kid again. I have finally grown old enough to feel nostalgia on that level.

I adore this movie! I feel that since the story/premise itself was more simple, it gave them a lot of space to dig in and explore each character's growth and identities. We got to explore Luca's dreams and optimism as his world literally expanded, Giulia's perseverance and hope for finding fellow underdogs, and Alberto's growth from having to be self-reliant and being left without a role model at a crucial age. Overall, it's just a beautiful, timeless film that I think will be remembered as a classic in the future. P.S. the picture in the end credits where Luca's dad tries espresso for the first time is so funny 😂

26:35 "Some people, they'll never accept him. But some will, and he seems to know how to find the good ones." I know that the LGBTQ+ representation isn't intentional but to me it feels very much there. This quote feels incredibly relatable to me in how in all of the bigotry and prejudice I managed to find friends that accepted me and were also LGBTQ+ as well.

I enjoyed the movie, but I was a bit bothered by the language inconsistencies. Like, they can read and speak Italian; Luca understood what "Vespa e liberta" meant, but when someone says what's wrong with you stupido, he has no idea what that means?

Just a comment to say that Alberto is my favorite character :D Yeah, the first time I watched this movie, I was: "damn, boy! why are you like this?..." but I knew something wrong, and then, we learned he was left alone by his father, and now he had a friend, he was scared of by leaving alone again. He is the one who made me cry 3 times while watching the movie. And I only cried at these moments.

i just wanted to say, about the gay undertones in this movie, that i don’t think shipping luca and alberto is the point. i think the point is that many lgbt people see themselves in many of their experiences, and can relate very much with what they’re going through (being outed, being bullied, being discriminated against, finding your people, your found family who accepts you no matter what…). this is basically a coming out story, and i think that if you dig a little bit deeper than the “childhood friendship, accepting differences” level, that is basically the only way to read this movie.

I don't know if I just saw less about this movie than I thought or what, but I had no idea the boys in this movie were in any way aquatic! There's a really sweet short on Disney+ about Alberto and Massimo. He keeps worrying he'll screw up as Massimo's "employee" while Giulia and Luca are away, to the point that he considers "quitting" so he won't disappoint his "boss" anymore. SPOILERS: He accidentally calls him dad. (It has a really sweet ending with the message that just because parents get mad at their kids, it doesn't mean they don't love them.)
