I always applaud Danny De Vito managing play an abusive parent figure so well while actually being such a good man irl especially during the filming of Matilda cause the girl who played Matilda's mum was sick during it so he took care of the little girl and made sure the mum got an early copy of the film so she could see it.

@@LordSpongy The stories behind the filming of this film would make anyone teary eyed. Danny DeVito who not only played Matilda's dad but also directed the movie kind of acted as a guardian for Mara Wilson, and being there for here while her mom was sick with, and eventually passed away from cancer. In the book Miss Honey said after her father died, Miss Trunchball would make her wash herself in the bath and every night would come up before she was done to check, and that if she'd thought that she hadn't washed herself properly she'd grab her head and hold it under the water. took me years to realise that her mother leaving her home alone five days a week to go and play bingo (the book confirmed that she drove to a town 5 or 8 miles away just to play) without calling a babysitter or getting a neighbour to keep an eye on her was child neglect and even if it couldn't get her arrested would definitely be grounds for a child protection agency to come around. Mrs Phelps the librarian was worried when Matilda told her about her mother but felt it was best not to get involved in other peoples lives - I guess that's another reason why she told her about getting a library card, even though she'd still be home alone most days of the week she wouldn't be out in the town or crossing a busy and possibly dangerous highway everyday.

3:47 Her brother Michael doesn't bully her in the book, but he also never defends her from their parents or stands up for her or asks her if she's ok or talks to her or anything. In fact the only interaction between them is when he waves goodbye at the end. He doesn't seem to get or mind that what his dad is doing is illegal, just thinks it's cool what his dad is able to do. In the musical he barely moves out of the chair and only ever repeats the last word of what someone else has said - little worried about him in fact.

Most teachers don’t start out that way. They become jaded. But they already worked so hard to get there, so they stay. Plus, most people aren’t lucky enough to have jobs they actually like. We’re conditioned to tough out a miserable job. As for having kids, well, most children are accidental, not choices. And a lot of people don’t want to opt out, so they keep the kid. And that will probably lead to abuse. Which brings us to Trunchbull. She’s just an abusive psychopath who openly wants to hurt children. That’s why she’s there.

I actually worked as a babysitter through college for many of my mom and sister's coworkers because I was so good with children. Children can't really help being who they are, their personality is forming and they need both freedom and guidance to do it well and that's on their caretakers. Kids, like them or not, deserve all the care and happiness.

Pam Ferris who played Trunchbull was better known in the UK for playing Ma Larkin in the Darling Buds of May - a role that couldn't be further from this one. She was a loving mother, who baked huge cakes with cream and strawberries and made jam and pies etc and wore summer dresses.

I didn't grow up with Matilda but I wish I had. While I was fortunate enough to have a decent home life I knew what it was like to be friendless and feel powerless to change it, except when I escaped into fantasy worlds (Whether through reading or just mentally). I knew how it felt to have adults condescend to you and treat you below your age. So I was struck dumb by how encouraging and altogether lovely Matilda was when I discovered it in my teens. Definitely something I intend to show my soon-to-be niece or nephew when they're old enough. :)

When you described the believability of the nice characters in Matilda, and Danny DeVito's performance as a terrible parent but still putting in a charming performance, it reminded me of Death to Smoochy. It has a great balance of both and the tone is similar to Matilda. Very underwatched, but truly a great Danny DeVito joint.

This movie really a helped me as a kid, but also highlighted my toxic and abusive parents so I connected with Matilda. My childhood was much different/more dangerous, but seeing the differences between a loving parent figure and obviously abusive parents, showed me that my childhood wasn't healthy. or normal. On top of that, Ms. Honey awakened my lesbian fantasies early on. HUGE CRUSH. Even beyond what I've already mentioned, watching it helped me grow my imagination. Before (and now that im older and more depressed), my imagination was stunted by the harsh realities, but it helped me imagine things like flying, being telekenis, etc. which in return helped me cope.

as a kid a lot of the things matilda faced at home were pretty familiar to me, and i didnt really think that they were that awful bc it just seemed... normal? the fact that matilda would pull pranks on them but never really wanted to be as bad to them as they were to her is real too, as a child, even if someone is only mean to you, you arent able to understand why that is or that you should just "be mean back" specially if they are your parents, because it only makes sense that they love you no matter what, thats how many peoples perspectives of love get corrupted. its just really sad that people can be so unecessarily mean or evil to beings who arent at fault if they lack skills or understanding or discipline, you know? the ending is just so satisfactory

Even just watching the parts you included here - have so many feelings! One of the saddest is Miss Honey saying "oh I grew up & got away" but then still having that mindset where her immediate reaction to Matilda's suggestion with the chocolate was "Oh I can't - she'd know." Oh - you didn't really get away. Not psychologically or emotionally - heck, not even physically considering it's a similar power dyanamic with their 'jobs' at the school. And the acting moment that totally deserves an Oscar in my mind is Mara Wilson by Matilday being like "oh you were the kid in the story!" and then realizing that this one adult/person who's really noticed & tried to help her (even more than the librarian) went through this, is related to the Trunchbull, is still suffering under the Trunchbull. Just the sheer talent with that horrified "No." as the camera's on her facial realization is epic.

And as a possible redemption sequel bit - I loved the mom scene at the end, but also Mikey's rather nice offer to Miss Honey of a beer? Just "Oh, you want one?" and she's "Oh - no thank you" gives the idea if he also was around better role models, he could be a fine citizen. (Similar to Dudley & Harry from the Hogwarts universe, the difference of 12 year old Dudley from 17-18 year old Dudley).
