I completely disagree with you about Mila Kunis' performance. The whole point is that Ani is meant to be cold in maturity, having not been believed by her mother about the gang rape and suffering the trauma of what she did to Arthur in the shooting ... The whole point is that she is CONCEALING her feelings. The younger Ani (Chiara Aurelia) got to be more emotional in her performance, as it required that. But Mila could only do this in her last scene with Finn Wittrock.

You kinda gloss over what really happened to this woman. The most important aspect is that men literaly destroyed her and she had noone there to help her understand she was a victim. Instead, thanks to our society, she is forced to be the one to carry the shame of what happened. But in spite of that she goes on in her life WITHOUT making more victims. As she clearly points out to Dean in the Library. (Best scene in my opinion) The biggest issue I see is you really focused on trivial things instead of the fact that Mila did an amazing job at covering almost every emotion a woman can have after something like this and she did it really well. It wasnt sugar coated and so I guess I can see why from a mans point of view you dont get it, but I disagree with your assessment. This was a really great movie with a great cast and Mila has my mad respect for how well she played this true to life.

Yes, the rape and the shooting were central to the story. But I don’t agree with people harping on about it and critisizing it that it was too much or too clichee. I really don’t think the movie was about the rape, metoo, the shooting or if she was involved in or not it. But about how it affected her and how she sees herself. I looked at the movie as a story of a woman finally finding her authentic self after so many years of denying herself due to trying to cope with trauma. She even says that in the movie, it’s about “everyone speaking freely”. Trauma affects everyone of us whether that be because of something as severe as a shooting or a rape, or “just” school bullying or a parent belitteling us; the feeling of “never being enough” haunts most of us in different ways. There are so many people who chase the idea of who they should be rather than who they truly are and want to be. Many people never get to the point where they stop to think about who they are and start healing their wounds. We live in a society who likes to numb its pain rather than try to accept its “dark spots”, never accepting its authenticity. It takes guts to be honest, to be yourself. So from that perspective I really liked the film and was honestly surprised of the mixed reviews. As a note, I did not read the book, so I have no comparison. Furthermore I agree that exploring the intimate side of relationships of sa victims would have been interesting. But not really relevant to this movie. The movie was not about her trying to make it work with Luke, but about her realizing step by step that she couldn’t be truely herself around him. That she always had to be this character and that is why she broke it off. He even said “you used to be fun!” refering to a version of her that wasn’t really her. I liked the scene at the end where she sat in the tv station dressing room looking into the many mirrors/versions of herself, seemingly ready to face them all.
@BambiLena666

I felt the movie went pretty explicit with it in her conversation with Luke at the end, when she reuses the "wind up doll" line, first we heard it as a snarky line at the start of the movie, as something she has over people, being able to manipulate them, and it comes back as a tragedy of never allowing herself to be who she is or even learning who that is.

@@yeelahowah7476 you mean the friend who literally shot a kid in the face minutes before handing her a gun? That was obviously part of her trauma, having to deal with that. But the movie is not really about that. They could have left that scene out and the story wouldn’t have changed much.

I liked it overall, but it felt like it bit off more than it could chew given the sensitive subject matter. Yeah I actually didn’t read the book so I thought it was going to turn out that she was a shooter some how .. but no I think it was all the trauma flashbacks that confused me . With the school shooting and the rapes .. it didn’t exactly work for me unless she was some how involved because I kept wondering why the mass shooting happened without the guys actual back stories .. to much going on . The rape part did affect me but that’s because a lot of women have been assaulted and I do feel like it gets blown off as their fault . Then again there are also women that lie that have ruined the whole believe women movement .

I think it did good job of showing how it affected her current view of life, i. e super focused on wealth. Also, the relationship between her and the fiance was shown during the scene they were going to make love. She got very aggressive with him and when he wanted to slow down, she panicked. That is a textbook example of a rape survivor. They don't know how to engage in love making in a healthy way.

I actually watched this Friday night before your commentary dropped and I was shocked to say the least. The description of the movie just says something dark happens in her past when a documentary drops, and I thought it was gonna be a death, but Jesus not a death of a whole soul. OMG what she goes through and went thru that night was horrible and then to have them try to blame her for the shooting was just another stab to her heart, and all this time she lives doing what "she is supposed to do" at her own detriment. I can't say I loved the movie, but I did love Mila Kunis like this, and in this. Her serious roles have been getting me lately. And yes, I liked the commentary but yeah I don't think you guys really covered or got how much this trauma truly affected her. But I enjoyed your discussion.

I don't agree with you. Not everyone thinks of her voice as Meg's voice from Family Guy, yeah, sure, it is also Meg's voice, but that is your problem that you have this image in your head, and has nothing to do with the ability or talent of the actress to narrate her character's story. About the chemistry - it's there, but also it is visible that the character is pretending to be someone she's not, so there should not be actual true love chemistry between them. Too polished? So you think women who have been raped and are pretending to be fine, cannot be sophisticated, sexy, and classy? The inner struggle is the inner struggle, you cannot judge someone by their looks, and cannot tell instantly that they are suffering just because they always look like they are, a lot of times these things are well-hidden behind smiles, acting confident while dying inside. I think this film is a good depiction of a sexual assault victim and her struggles, and again tells us not to judge the book by its cover.

I agree with you! I mean the “looking polished” thing was the entire point! She even said it herself in one of her flashbacks. She wanted to look like a woman that demands respect just by the way she looked. She said she starved herself, got a breast reduction, got herself fancy clothes; all to be this small, slender, yet super sophisticated woman. To be this woman people respected. To be a woman people believed.

My biggest problem with this move is how simple-mind it portrays the healing process of rape victim. Twice this girl/woman get chastised to her face to be honest, when she clearly never had the support and confidence to do so. After the shit talk by her boss she suddenly breaks loose is ludicrous. I feel like the message it sends to rape victims is that just come forward, do your part, and you’ll be stronger and better and who cares what the world thinks of you? Sex as a topic without the criminal aspect is already a sensitive topic and I think in part this movie did correctly address that. But the way it ended left a bad taste, and I can’t like it even though I really want to.

@@Allgloss312 well said my friend! Honestly I felt like the violence of a SA would have left the character way more edgy, less polished. I know that’s how the director felt the character should be but I didn’t buy it either. I loved the way Chiaria played the younger version, I thought she did sooo well but like you said, as soon as it switched to modern day kunis, I was like nah, I don’t see any semblance of the two meshing at all. I know the character was supposed to be forging this life she thought she should have or the person she thought she would be I mean I get the premise for why he was going for that but kunis’s just didn’t pull it off. I wasn’t convinced at all. I thought there was so much left out as to how she got from younger kunis’s to present day just really not a good transition. And the thing is you know like, ok, I’m 62 now OK but 40 years ago I also had an rather violent event happen to me at 22. I’ll tell you that it changes you….in drastic ways…not all bad…but it changes you….and based on what I know about that, I soooo felt her character should have been better written, not to mention, maybe even someone else to play that part. I felt there was so much left out about that just based on what I know about myself and what I went through I just feel like I might not even have gotten this story really if I didn’t have my own do you know what I’m saying? It was just that lean on details… I thought I was the only person who felt unsatisfied after the movie but the more comments I read I’m realizing I’m not alone. It was an ok movie like you said…but it certainly wasn’t great and didn’t make me feel like I had watched something with a message in it….it fell short for me. There was just so much more to have been explored I thought. Even the actual assault I felt was so underplayed and not really clear exactly who, how and all that…. Like I sort of felt like The Director wanted to hurry up and throw a rape scene in there without really getting into the particulars of the actual rape and everything that comes after that…. because there sure is a lot that got skipped, I felt anyway. You’re right…directing was an issue and casting…although I did enjoy the younger version of kunis character. you know the other thing is…. I know there’s more of the me to movement these days and there was never that of course when I was a young 22 years old but we certainly didn’t talk about it and we didn’t tell people and shit like I said I’m 62 years old and I’m just now talking about it really…. I mean I don’t openly discuss it with people ever and that’s some of the things I was thinking about when she was waffling back-and-forth about doing that documentary I just thought to myself that just doesn’t sound right…. Anyway thx for your thoughts and obviously I agree! ✌️

I think the reality version of this film would have been the girl spirals after the rape and school shooting incident, weighed down by shame and misplaced guilt, she grows into an adult with a mediocre job at best, turbulent romantic relationship. In reality she would likely suffer from addiction or exhibit anti-social traits. Not somehow turned into a semi-sociopath doing fairly well in her career and love life. Not saying the latter can’t happen, but it is far more likely her future would be on a downward trajectory after major traumas. There was one part I thought was kind of brilliant, where the narration unknowingly turned into spoken words, as she walks away thinking out loud some snarky word. The horror on her and everyone else’s face as it happened. That could have great if the narration stop right there and then.

There were a few things that bothered me about this movie. The actress "tried" too hard to portray this image of feminism, instead of dealing with her past trauma. It's difficult to empathize with the main character when she uses her trauma as a stick to beat everyone around her with. Even those unrelated to it. Also, if her trauma is that triggering, how did they make it to their wedding without it ever been addressed earlier on. I also found it strange how she killed the only person who believed her.

This character wasnt striving for feminist reasons, she was just trying to feel safe. When something like this happens, from that moment on, you dont feel safe. @@SLKnoxx I don't buy that way of looking at it at all and the reason for it is that Kunis never sells that as her character and what she's dealing with. She comes off like someone who is hiding something about her past that she feels ashamed of and is trying to fit in with the glamorous rich people......we also know that she WANTS to have that power over people like she saw with that woman when she was a teenager (we see this clearly when she tries using her boss's office as her own)........she doesn't like rich people, she doesn't like marriage or babies but she wants the power of being someone important. That's what getting her story out there does......it makes her important in a way that feels genuine to her. It's not fake, it's real. It's also a power fantasy, she does not deal with her trauma in a healthy way, she treats people as disposable (just like how she was) but without making her be responsible for the consequences of her actions. She strings a guy along and almost marries him, despite the fact that she detests who he is and the script forces lines into his mouth to make him come off as unlikable to justify her unlikable behavior. Ani is an unlikable person and the only reason why we are supposed to like her is because she was raped.......that's it. The character herself is not likable......but she's a victim, therefore we have to like her. One of the arguments of the film is gun control vs sexual assault and what takes precedence over the other......why not both take precedence? The school shooting is a fucking plot device......it is a means to get the plot rolling without really playing an integral part in the story. Ani isn't traumatized by the shooting......therefore the shooting doesn't matter. What matters is what happened to her before the shooting.......even then, there doesn't have to be a school shooting to tell that story. The film walks a damn fine line in getting you to sympathize with school shooters and their reasons for doing what they did. And Ani did not save some of the victims, do the ends justify the means? Did they deserve to die for what they did to her? The book was written in 2015......the film is out in 2022.......school shootings have become far more prevalent in society than in 2015. The film just sweeps it under the rug......it feels absolutely cheap and done for shock value. Long story short, this movie was advertised to be something else in the trailers and I hated the film that we got......wasn't a fan

I don't feel good for her because despite the fact that she had a story to tell, it doesn't justify using him in the process and not writing things in a way in where they could have worked things out. I would say that this was another Netflix movie with a good start, but shitty ending.

Imo, she didn't feel like there was anything to work out with the fiance as he was just another part of her made up self. She confirmed that he was in fact a box for her to check off in her journey of pretending. She loved him as a person, but there's no way their relationship could survive as it was because she didn't make it past the "representative " phase people tend to have when they first meet someone. The entire relationship was her representative and not her true self. Hell she hadn't yet discovered herself yet so there's no way she could've been her authentic self with him. It was a fairy tale masquerading as love. She needed to be free at the end to explore more of her new found self. He even alluded to the "fun her" that he missed.... that was just a representation of what she thought he needed her to be.

I was in tears during that scene. While he was saying "Why didn't you tell me, I thought you were past all this", I felt that to my bones and I wanted so desperately for him to then say "I'm sorry I didnt know" or "Im proud of you." Because I knew thats what I wanted to hear. But that would have been to easy and completely unrealistic.

@@CANDACE_7 I hear what you're saying, but putting yourself in his position, with the bias of realizing that you have been used, you wouldn't feel sympathy for her, so in that context, I can't feel sympathy for her. Also, her lack of having to resolve that her former classmates were killed, one of which she left to die and the other being her friend, which she killed herself. There's also the internal conflict that goes with seeking revenge for what happened to you and knowing that it came by way of death, which was partly done in her name. We all would like to have things happen to people that have wronged us - the thing is that we would like it to happen in such a way where guilt cannot be placed onto us, whether it be from others or from ourselves. Absolution never comes as easy as it did for Ani.

@@BobaDavis you can’t feel sympathy for someone who has been gang raped, in a school schooting and then been ostracized for both? No sympayhy for someone who has not been believed, not heard, not seen when she needed it most? The “I used you!” Wasn’t done intentionally. It wasn’t done out of malice or with mean intent. It was unconcious, a way for her to cope. When she realized it, she broke it off. She did say she felt regret, but she realized that’s what is the truth.

The Vox Lux school shooting scene was as palpable as Elephant’s. Very memorable. I wished the pop star storyline had been more compelling and intertwined more with her traumatic experience.

Honestly as a person that can relate with some sort of an identity crisis and being a people pleaser I thought it was refreshing, hard to watch at times due to the rape scenes but it was good overall… My biggest issue would be that it still feels incomplete, like I’m genuinely pissed about Dean not spending the rest of his life in prison.. The recorded conversation between her and her abuser seemed pointless since she didn’t actually use the audio for anything besides getting the personal satisfaction of hearing him admit to raping her ( although I get it) I still feel like Justice wasn’t completely served… Also, she murdered the one kid that stuck up for her which was kinda bizarre in my opinion… Like why kill him? That kinda pissed me off

This movie really bothered me! After research, the author of this book, was gang raped and I feel badly for her. But, the Columbine references - too many. Tiffany “ani” main character - was one of Columbine shooters girlfriends names- also Tiffany. The Columbine shooting = 1999, so did the one in this movie. The killers in this movie were very sweet kids and both of whom - the main character relied on and vented to about being rapped. Getting revenge on the rapists was good, but NOT via a mass shooting. This sends the wrong message to kids and to the energy of the world. I didn’t like the movie! It’s saying it’s essentially why kids shoot (they are sweet and bullied) and it’s also saying justice to the rapists is okay in this way. It is not. With so many real world mass shooting events since Columbine in 1999- I think the author of the book should have never written it and should have never consented to disturbing the peace with such real life realities combined w utter falsehoods! Not to mention Parkland shooter just got life in prison not death, so the message is so wrong. Many people I know who watched this movie didn’t feel remorse when the rapists were shot - and that’s a very scary emotion to bring up in people! Because of this, the movie is white trash. It also takes away from the reality of rape and gang rapes! Columbine shooters disturbed! One of them who did go out w Tiffany in real life, staged his suicide after she broke up. Not the same kids / shooters. The kids in the movie were very sweet. This author appears white trash !

A good husband? 😂😂😂 I feel terrible for your partner! He was a piece of trash, constantly dismissing her trauma and being angry that she wasn't always a good happy little trophy wife. A guy who whines about how his traumatized wife used to be "fun" and complains that she's making HER story too public since "her rapists were assholes, BUT.....", is not a good partner.

Very disappointed..a lot of things missing, not really any suspense in the plot, and i think they didn t cast the right actors neither. U can never really get the character of mila kunis - her speech, the off voice, her relationship with the fiancé, the work etc nothing matches with the profile. I agree the best acting is actually the mum...

Lord the comments below are as ridiculous as this movie. This movie was BAD, Mila Kunis (who in the past I thought was an ok actress) was beyond terrible in this movie and everyone wants these guys to praise the movie to high heaven just because it's on a topic that they personally find triggering. Just because a movie talks about women or gays or trans or blacks or whatever all of a sudden it has to be beyond reproach. What complete nonesense. Movies about women, and issues women face can still be bad, just as movies about straight, white men can still be good. Stop being such cry babies.
