If you think about it, Luigi's already close to losing it. His humming is the only thing keeping him sane; after all, I would feel more weirded out if I heard music in supposedly empty hallways than if it were just quiet.

Argon Trooper The orchestra is actually non-diegetic. This game mixed diegetic and non-diegetic music really well.

High/Full: Luigi is confident in finding his brother. Medium: Luigi is scared, almost about to lose it. Low: Luigi is literally 1 step further to fainting. Seriously about to lose it.

Fun fact: Luigi's voice was made up from the spot when the voice actor of Mario, was asked if the people asking a Mario head question's asked Mario, "Can we see Luigi?" And then Mario's voice actor had to make a Luigi voice, without moving his mouth, since they did not make a Luigi's head, so the actor of Mario, has to make Luigi nervous and scared to come out and show his face, and that was when Luigi's voice was made.

Can we just appreciate the fact that this man has the biggest set of brass balls in the Mario-verse and no one acknowledges it? Name one other character who would go this far just to save their kin. Would peach go this far for Mario? Would Bowser go this far for his kid? Highly doubtful.

Wario would go to the ends of the earth... for himself. That being said. It’s not so much he’s fearless like Mario, or even cowardly, yet still brave like Luigi. Rather, he’s hellbent on doing whatever it takes to get his treasure back. It’s like a person who has lost everything but has nothing to lose. Wario is confident not because he has things he cares about on the line, but because he has already lost them, and has no way to go but forward. And when you have nothing to lose, you have everything to gain.

This is the beginning. Luigi's just starting to explore the halls. He isn't really okay with the idea, but he has the courage. There are tons of spirits that roam the halls that want to get the jump on him, but he won't allow it with is trusty Poltergust. Although he's confused at first as nearly all the doors are locked, he hums to himself to keep calm. Though unaware that things will change over the course of his journey.

I played and finished this games dozens of times as a kid and never noticed that the music changed depending on your health, it’s so well integrated that it just felt completely natural how it sounded if I was full health or low health and just tought it was just the feeling of security that changed while playing.

When I hear the theme in my head I hear it with Luigi's humming 100% of the time. I didn't realize this until I just now came back and listened to it again. The theme song itself was hittin' the same way

Working at an expotic pet store my boss told me when working with scary or aggressive animals ( or both as it often is ) that you should hum a tune as that cancels out the vibration coming from your body which can be sensed and taken advantage of by the animals, essentially making you less likely to get bit, i don't know if it's true or not but she's been doing this for 40 years so i assume she knows what she is talking about.
