Luis, your de-Mayerne-knife at 13:06 behaves very well. That's really an amazing tool. I made one with plate steel but yours with the old saw blade steel seems to perform even better. Very cool tool! Best wishes, Die Himmelsscheibe

I eliminate the weave by applying gesso with a drywall pallet knife, then I let it dry thoroughly, I sand it with a heavy grit sandpaper to level out indentations and accumulated stops, then I apply another colored layer, again, with a scraper then I repeat the sanding (800 grit (+/-)) then sand it again with 900+ grit fine sandpaper, leaving a surface like marble smooth. I use acrylic mixed in with Calcium Carbonate. Colored with grey, Sienna, yellow ochre or both mixed. When I was really broke I used chalk, heated and crushed mixed with elmers glue. I don’t know if there were problems later on with cracking. But I haven’t had any complaints, so…

(Bren from Germany) Thank you, Maestro Borrero for these stunning videos! Question: In many Caravaggio’s Paintings (also from other painters) we see some dark areas damaging, while light areas remain intact. Those dark damaged zones look like a very thin fragile film separating from the canvas. What can be the cause? Thank you again for all!
@LuisBorreroVisualArtist
@LuisBorreroVisualArtist 2 жыл бұрын
Saludos Bren: Sometimes these dark areas defects develop as a result of the use of Burnt umber or bituminous earths such as Cassel earth or Van dyck brown.

Thanks for the worning to be careful with resins ( 44:44 )! I should used them limited and not fall to much in love with them. Maybe because of having been a fan of Mussinis since many years... So, thanks for the warning.

I would like to ask whether Caravaggio's ground, just linseed oil add earth pigments, does not add other ingredients, such as animal glue, to form a semi-absorbent base?🙏

Some manufacurers seem to make sun thickened linseed and walnaut oil ( 43:47 ) now commercially available. I noticed that Kremer, as an example, have them now and since short in their catalogue. In "de Mayerne" I tried to figure the process out, but it seems no to be very easy in areas with lower sun intensity (although this your would have been good to try it). What for me seems to be difficult to solve to dry it on air, even with a glass plate for coverage above it, to avoid dust attaction, or insects. I have to check whether I correctly remember the source with the glass plate method, whether it came from the "de Mayerne" manuscript or one of the manuscripts in Marryfields translated treatises. Amazing how Luis can find back all the sources in his so many references, much more professionalism in the studies, at least better structure and marking, I guess...

Luis, how much lead white did you use ( 14:47 ) in this case? Was Paceco precise on that and gave some aproximation about the percentage umbra compared to lead white? Was the lead white also given to stabilize the ground, or simply for more body? Thanks and best wishes, Die Himmelscheibe

Hi Luis! What is calcita? Where I buy calcita and carbonato de cálcio is bay in market?
@LuisBorreroVisualArtist
@LuisBorreroVisualArtist 10 ай бұрын
Calcite is the refined form of calcium carbonate. The old masters used various kinds of calcium carbonate. Such as natural chalk, calcite, marble dust, and even crushed up egg and sea shells. You can buy quality calcite from www.kremerpigments.com

Art is like religion. You have your gods and your doctrine, and you can follow her all of your life. Of course, she never did lead to redemption from hell such as that of Jesus Christ. But she makes an earthly comfort.
